    hrs Estimate Duration

Listen to a live performance of classic Cuban music by the Arsenio Rodriguez Group, a band that plays songs popularized by the trailblazing musician Arsenio Rodriguez.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at the Havana Libre Hotel, an icon in the city’s popular La Rampa district. Here, you will be treated to a rousing performance by the Arsenio Rodriquez Group, an esteemed dance band that plays music that its namesake founder popularized.

As a bandleader and percussionist, Rodriquez revolutionized Cuban music in the 1940s by emphasizing African influences and adding the conga drum and additional trumpets to his musical compositions. The result was some of the most beloved and enduring Cuban dance music ever recorded. His style was a precursor to the more widely recognized salsa music.

Blinded as a child when a mule kicked him in the head, Rodriquez became known as the Blind Marvel. Once you hear the Arsenio Rodriquez Group play some of the founder’s more popular songs, you too will have an appreciation for his marvelous music.

You may hear classics such as “El Divorcio,” “Papa Upa” and his first famous composition “Bruca maniguá,” now a standard. Its lyrics recall the freedom of African slaves in Cuba, a subject Rodriquez knew well, as he was a descendant of Congolese slaves.
