Nature Exploration by ATV & Kayak
hrs Estimate Duration
Kayak through glassy-smooth mangrove channels teeming with wildlife and then drive an all-terrain vehicle along a beach that is a vital nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a leisurely drive to the Verde Camacho Ecological Center, an institute dedicated to protecting the surrounding estuary and beaches, which are a favorite nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles. Your exploration of this pristine natural environment will begin by easing into a kayak and paddling off into the estuary.
The waters are typically calm with no waves or strong currents, which makes for almost effortless paddling. Kayaking is a great way to observe the wildlife, as you can easily pause when you wish, and there is no motor to disturb the animals in their natural habitats.
While paddling through the channels, which are rimmed with mangroves, you can expect to see an abundant of water birds. Roseate spoonbills, wood storks and white-faced ibis are commonly spotted. You will also pass an enclosed area inhabited by American crocodiles, which thrive in brackish estuaries and mangrove swamps.
After kayaking, you will hop aboard an ATV and ride down a nearby beach, while learning even more about the local ecosystem. Olive Ridley sea turtles migrate here each year to lay eggs in the sand before returning to the open ocean. While among the most plentiful of sea turtles, Olive Ridleys are declining in number, making this sanctuary all the more valuable.
