Discover the charms of Granada, the architecturally stunning capital of the Andalusia region, by exploring a magnificent palace, the Royal Chapel and the city’s oldest quarter.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for scenic drive inland to Granada, a city likely named for the Spanish word for pomegranate, a fruit so abundant it is depicted on Granada’s coat of arms. Or Granada may have derived from its Moorish name, as the city was the Moors’ last stronghold before falling to Spain’s Catholic monarchs in 1492.

Granada features a wealth of extraordinary architecture such as your first stop, the Carlos V Palace within the Alhambra complex. Construction on the palace began in the early 16th century, following a Renaissance ground plan with a circular courtyard within a square building—the only one of its kind in Spain. Amazingly, a monarch has never lived in the palace, nor did it even have a roof until 1957.

Walking a bit farther, you will soon arrive in the labyrinthine streets of the Albayzin quarter (down part of the quarter), the city’s oldest section. UNESCO has deemed it a World Heritage site for its harmonious blend of Moorish and Andalusian architecture.

Nearby, you will find the glorious Royal Chapel, the final resting place of Spanish monarchs such as Queen Isabella and Kind Ferdinand. According to legend, villagers discovered a statue of the Madonna in a grotto a millennia ago. And as a result, it became a pilgrimage site, and still draws many of the faithful to venerate the image, which now resides in a grand basilica. Over the centuries the image has darkened by the smoke of millions of candles and she has come to be known as the Black Virgin. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost a thousand years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, work and welcoming pilgrims. You'll visit the sanctuary, and will have free time to explore on your own, visit the grotto, or take photos of the surrounding landscape. There are souvenir shops available, as well as food outlets.

Cruise along the eastern coast of Fuerteventura in a sleek catamaran to a sheltered bay where you can swim and relax. The cruise will begin at Caleta de Fuste and head south towards a largely undeveloped area noted for its hauntingly beautiful arid landscape. Along the way, you will pass precipitous cliffs and small streams flowing into the sea. The catamaran will anchor in the natural harbor off Pozo Negro beach, a lovely stretch of dark volcanically created sand. Visit The Royal Casino of Murcia dating from 1847, it is one of the most historic buildings. Although this is still an active private club, the ground floor is open to the public. After a period of decline in the second half of the 20th century, the building was completely refurbished and many of the rooms were restored to their original splendor. Once the main port for the Island, Garachico was almost completely destroyed in the 1706 by when nearby Chinyero volcano erupted for more than a week, burying at least half of the city in lava. A remnant of that massive eruption has become one of Garachico's greatest draws - it's volcanically formed natural saltwater pools . Stop at the fishing village of Cabo de Palos and pause to take in the views and snap a few photographs.
