Here’s your opportunity to enjoy the Alaskan adventure of a lifetime by air, water, and ice! more...

Here’s your opportunity to enjoy the Alaskan adventure of a lifetime by air, water, and ice! The van driver will take you from the pier to a private helicopter base on Douglas Island. At the airport, you’ll be given a pre-flight safety briefing. Aboard the helicopter, you’ll fly high above Juneau, the Tongass National forest, the Juneau Ice Field, Gastineau Channel, and Taku River, all the way to Taku Point.

The airboat Captain will help you board the covered airboat as you cruise the 5-mile terminus of the only advancing glacier of the Juneau Ice Field. You’ll come within arm’s reach of the ice, and you’ll understand the immense size of this glacier as you stare up at it from the river. The Captain will stop in various locations for photos, and to talk about the glacier and the river basin that it has been carved by nature over the years.

Back at Taku Point, you’ll again board the helicopter that will take you up, up, up to the top of the Taku Glacier. Step out onto the amazing 4,500 foot thick ice. You’ll have time for more photos, and your pilot will give you details about the ice field and Taku Glacier. The helicopter will then return you to the heliport and the van will return you to the pier.

    OVERVIEW

Cruise past the naturally beautiful islands around Ketchikan while observing iconic Alaskan wildlife and unique points of interest. Once onboard, relax inside the heated main cabin, out on the observation deck, or move from place to place as you see fit. No matter where you sit or stand, the views will be spectacular. You will see the historic lighthouse on Guard Island, the totem poles at Totem Bight State Park and the now-shuttered Ward Cove pulp mill. You will also witness a diversity of ecosystems as you cruise past coastal residential areas on Revillagigedo Island and along the undeveloped shoreline of Gravina Island, much of which is blanketed by the Tongass National Forest, our world’s largest temperate rainforest. Wildlife is abundant, so keep an eye out for bald eagles, harbor seals and seabirds. A sampler plate of Alaskan specialties, including a traditional alder-smoked salmon, will enhance the experience.

Travel along the incredibly photogenic Klondike Highway to the Canadian border, while pausing along the way to snap pictures of the gorgeous wilderness. The road pretty much follows the trail that prospectors carved out during the Gold Rush of 1898. The countryside is still largely undeveloped, except for a few bridges and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway that parallels the road. Named for the first Euro-American settlers in the area, the Captain William Moore Bridge offers a particularly panoramic view of Alaska’s interior. Other roadside stops will be made to view natural attractions such as ancient glaciers and Pitchfork Falls, a lovely cascade that splits into branches that resemble the tines of a pitchfork. After pausing again at the highway sign that marks the Canadian border at White Pass summit, you will travel back down the Klondike Highway toward Skagway. Commentary will enhance your understanding of the attractions and the area’s history.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Travel a picturesque highway that follows a trail created during the Gold Rush of 1898. • Snap pictures while pausing at scenic lookouts with views of glaciers and waterfalls. • Stop at the summit of White Pass, which marks the U.S. and Canadian border. • Hear enlightening commentary that describes the area’s history and attractions.

Go fishing for halibut in Icy Strait, where these giant flatfish are voraciously feeding throughout the summer. Meeting at the dock, you will embark your comfortable cabin cruiser and receive a safety orientation before taking the 20–30-minute ride out to the premier fishing area in Icy Strait. These waters are teeming with halibut as they serve as the main migration corridor for halibut traveling from the Pacific to their summer feeding grounds and spawning streams in southeast Alaska. The largest Pacific flatfish, Alaskan halibut are renowned for their mammoth size. The former state record halibut-a 440-pound whopper-was landed near Hoonah, so catching a 100-pounder in Icy Strait isn't unusual. Imagine the thrill of hooking one of these monster fish and reeling it in from the depths. It's an amazing experience because halibut are longer than most flatfishes with a width one third of their length, so that husky girth produces a lot of resistance. You will spend approximately 2.5 hours on the water, fishing with bait that may include herring, salmon and octopus, which is one of the halibut's favorite meals. If you catch one, you'll notice that halibut has smooth scales, a light-colored bottom side and a darker top. The colors are a natural camouflage that mimics the hues of the ocean floor and water. Not only are these waters home to halibut, but they are also filled with whales, sea lion, and seals so come prepared with your camera and binoculars. At the conclusion of your fishing time, you will head back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights as you make your way to Mendenhall Valley -- home of the Mendenhall Glacier. Upon arriving at Mendenhall, your Driver-guide will point out many of the attractions that you'll want to experience during your 2.5 hour stay. Areas you'll want to explore include the central view from Photo Point, the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center -- includes a short film telling the story of the Juneau Ice Field, several scenic trails. The duration of the stay will allow for ample time to walk out to Nugget Creek Falls where you can stand along the shore as a large glacier fed waterfall terminates nearby. This same shore provides the closest view of Mendenhall Glacier without standing on the ice. Other area trails include Steep Creek -- where sockeye salmon can be seen spawning from mid-July through September, and the Moraine Ecology Trail. Each of these trail’s meanders through the Tongass National Forest, and many offer different viewpoints of the glacier in the background. Due to occasional bear activity, food consumption is prohibited in the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. Note: This tour operates under a special use permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service.
