Zip through some of the most stunningly beautiful terrain on the Big Island in an ATV, following a trail through rainforest and fields that offers sweeping views of volcanoes.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at the trailhead for the ATV circuit, where you will receive a briefing on how to maximize your all-terrain experience. You will then ease into a fully automatic ATV and drive the 4x4 vehicle or settle in as a passenger. Either way, you can expect it to be an exhilarating experience as you travel through some of the most stunning scenery on the Big Island.

Along the way, you will enjoy panorama views of several volcanoes, including dormant Mauna Kea, which is the highest point in Hawaii, and Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano. You will also see two volcanoes that are quite active: Kilauea and Pu’u O’o. All of them are reminders of Hawaii’s volcano formation over the centuries.

The trail allows you to drive through all sorts of terrain, from rainforests to verdant fields to deep river gorges. Certain areas will likely be wet, which will make the ride all the more thrilling, as your ATV tears through the terrain, spewing water and mud in every direction.

When you pause at particularly scenic spots, the guide will elaborate on the history of the area. You might also learn about Hawaii’s endemic flora and fauna.

Your exciting day begins with a scenic narrated drive along the beautiful Hamakua coastline from the cruise ship pier to the rain forest at Botanical World Adventures.

Take an incredible journey by bike through an area of the Hamakua Coast once dominated by Hawai`i’s sugar industry. This adventurous tour makes its way through a segment of the Old Mamalahoa Highway where you are surrounded by green rolling pastures and lush botanical scenery. This once well traveled road takes us back in time as we make our way through old plantation villages, cross over bridges from the early 1900’s and become mesmerized by the abundance of greenery. View beautiful streams and waterfalls originating from the slopes of Mauna Kea as you cross over each bridge.

This ride engages all of our senses with the smells and sounds of the rainforest, the sights of the brightly colored tropical flowers, and the tastes of paradise. Within the botanical gardens you are surrounded with an entourage of foliage from all over the world, as there are fruits in the trees above you, orchids blossoming beside you, and a carpet of grass below you. Before you know it, you are on a treasure hunt to find all the seasonal jewels and gems this amazing botanical garden has to offer. The guides will then transport you by van to their private waterfall on the property for one last amazing photo opportunity!

The experience continues as you journey back to the pier with a stop at Low Store, a family owned treasure since 1925 where you can purchase tropical smoothies and Hawaiian shaved ice. Then continue on the incredible scenic route of Onomea Bay to make a final stop at Big Island Candies, famous for their handmade macadamia nut shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate!

Depart Hilo Pier and head to Liliokulani Gardens with views of Hilo and the mountains. Proceed through historic downtown Hilo and up to Rainbow Falls. Continue on to new Saddle Road Highway stopping at scenic points of interest until reaching the vast lava fields of Mauna Loa Mountain. Disembark and experience this amazing area, while gaining an understanding of how this huge Island was formed and continues to grow.

Next stop is Mauna Kea Recreation Park, which has been recently upgraded with excellent amenities and nice views and limited vending. Walk around the park (7000 foot elevation) and take pictures of the 3 mountains. The journey back is very different even though you are on the same road and again, stop at scenic points of interest and possibly see volcanic activity at a great distance. Continuing back into Hilo drive to Mauna Loa Macnut Farm with its informational displays and broad range of products and snacks as well as ice cream, sandwiches and coffee (not included). Hamakua Explore the famed Hamakua Coast, home to magnificent country reminiscent of “old Hawaii”. Sparsely populated Hamakua is studded with breathtaking waterfalls, stunning valleys, and eccentric towns. Traveling north, first stop at Tex Drive-In, famous for made-to- order malasadas. The Valley of the Kings, Waipio Valley is a place of impossibly steep cliffs carved by plunging waterfalls cascading more than a thousand feet to the valley floor below.

Waipio Valley is still home to taro farmers as it has been for a thousand years. Turning off the highway we descend into Laupahoehoe Point. Laupahoehoe village was located here until the destruction left behind the 1946 tsunami forced the town to move to higher ground. Next stop at Akaka Falls State Park, the site of the largest easily accessible waterfall on the island. You’ll traverse a paved walking path right through the center of a lush rainforest to Akaka Falls, a stunning 442 foot waterfall that plunges down a sheer cliff and into the water below.

Leaving the highway behind you’ll travel up a bumpy old sugar cane gravel road to a remote waterfall hidden in a tropical rainforest. Spend time here relaxing, swimming in the cool mountain stream under the waterfall, and enjoy a Hawaii-style BBQ lunch complete with complimentary beer and champagne. Complete the day with a shopping stop with Hawaiian mac nut samples, Hawaii Island crafts, local products, Kona coffee and more.

Visit several landmark attractions throughout the district of Puna, many of them the result of periodic volcanic activity.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an immensely picturesque drive through the southeastern tip of the Big Island in the shadow of several volcanoes. Along the way, the guide will describe Hawaii’s extraordinarily geology and volcanology.

That introduction to the island’s natural history will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sights that lie ahead, beginning with the MacKenzie State Recreation Area. While walking its black-sand beach, you will notice how volcanic eruptions have shaped its dramatic coastal cliffs, which are steep, jagged and wonderfully scenic.

You will also see how a volcanic eruption changed Isaac Hale Beach Park by cutting off its boat ramp from Pohoiki Bay. Coping with active volcanoes is a part of life on the Big Island. While stopping at the Star of the Sea Painted Church, you will hear how residents had to relocate the church twice to avoid a slow-moving river of lava.

Lava Tree State Monument presents another perspective of how volcanoes have the changed the landscape. The unusual lava molds of tree trunks standing throughout the park are from a centuries-old volcanic eruption.

Continuing on to a nearby bay, you will have the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters or simply swim, if you prefer. You might also browse the shops, where you can find signature merchandise such as Kona coffee and macadamia nuts.
