Nicaragua Traditions & More
hrs Estimate Duration
Your guide will introduce you to the rich cultural traditions of Nicaragua on your drive to El Viejo, the old town. You’ll visit the colonial church known as the Menor Basilica, constructed in the early 17th century. Admire the church's interior, richly decorated and well maintained. Look for the most interesting aspect of this church--a small Virgin Mary statuette.
In 1562 the Spanish conquistadors used the little statue to get through the native villages. The inhabitants were fascinated by this stunning image and people came from far and wide to see it. You'll also see some of the silverware used then and now by a group of religious ladies and learn how this became a Catholic ritual. You’ll continue to the colorful little town of Chinandega and learn about the importance of the park for the locals and their impressive colonial church.
