Step back in time to the 18th century to experience Louisbourg, a thriving seaport and capital of Cape Breton Island. The fortress is Canada’s largest historical reconstruction, it has been meticulously rebuilt. more...

During your approximate 45 minute drive to the Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Site, you’ll cross over the pretty Mira River which is the longest navigable river in Nova Scotia. The fortress is Canada’s largest historical reconstruction, where you step back in time to the 18th century, when Louisbourg was a thriving seaport – one of the busiest harbors in North America. The site has been meticulously rebuilt to one quarter of the 18th century town, on the foundations of the original by following detailed blueprints from Paris archives.

Your visit to this living museum will begin with the 45-minute Time Travelers Program where costumed actors reenact the lives of individuals that resided here during the pre-siege era. A kitchen servant will talk to you about her life serving the elite and teach you the art of making hot chocolate, the old fashioned French way, which you will get to sample. A Compagnies Franches soldier will tell you about soldier’s life and invite you to a demonstration of a life musket firing.

You are then free to explore this fascinating historic site on your own, taking in the beauty of the exterior architecture of the buildings and visiting some of the exhibit buildings. It offers you the opportunity to imagine life in the toughest of conditions almost 300 years ago.

“Ciad Mile Failte” - a hundred thousand welcomes await you! Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland and nowhere is this more evident than on Cape Breton Island. This picturesque excursion takes you to the very heart of the island. You’ll see some of the Island's most dynamic scenery, weaving a route through rugged countryside, touching the shores of the famous Bras d'Or Lakes. Known as the "Great Inland Sea", as the lakes are salt water, this region is a major breeding ground for bald eagles and other wildlife.

As your tour progresses, you'll stop at the center of Cape Breton Island, Hectors' Point, Iona and visit the Nova Scotia Highland Village, a 50 acre historical site overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. Take a journey through 180 years of Cape Breton’s Scottish architecture, hosted by costumed staff, trained in conversational Gaelic and local history. Here, you’ll view a full size replica of a Scottish Blackhouse, a one room structure occupied by the first Scottish settlers in the region and the only one of its kind in North America. A hilltop panoramic view offers a beautiful blend of land, sky and water. Enjoy tea or coffee and oatcakes before returning to your ship.

Sample a beer in three downtown pubs, all of them offering a selection of local brews and imported favorites from Ireland and England.

After walking from the pier, you will soon reach the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse, the first of three pubs where you will sample a beer. The alehouse offers nearly two dozen different brews, ranging from Guinness Irish Stout to an India Pale Ale known simply as Keith’s.

The Old Triangle also serves several local beers such as Breton Brewing’s Sons of Hector dark brown ale and a Canadian lager called Barking Squirrel. Whichever beer you choose to sample, you can be sure that the atmosphere will be inviting as you mingle among the locals.

It’s only natural that this pub tour begins at an Irish alehouse, as Sydney has deep Celtic roots. The city’s iconic, 50-foot-high Celtic fiddle at the cruise terminal honors that history.

Your second stop will be the Crown & Moose Pub, located in a waterfront hotel. This pub has an English flair, which is reflected in the selection of beers. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, an ideal setting to sip another brew.

Then it’s on to Daniel’s Restaurant & Bar, home to cold brews, great food and good times. Enjoy a beer from a selection of Nova Scotia brews, or perhaps something that reminds you of home. Afterwards, you will walk back to the pier or you may remain in town and return to your ship at leisure, if you prefer.

Settle into an open-air amphibious vessel for an enlightening tour of downtown Sydney and then drive straight into the harbor to enjoy a different perspective of the city.

After departing from the pier in an amphibious Harbour Hopper, you will begin an enlightening drive through Sydney. You won’t have to travel far before seeing the first attraction; Sydney’s iconic 50-foot-high Celtic fiddle is right at the cruise terminal.

Continuing on into downtown, you can expect to pass verdant parks, a statue that honors the Merchant Marines and the 19th-century Bank of Montreal building, which has been converted into a museum. A former steel plant has also been turned into a museum that showcases how steel production once drove the economy of Cape Breton Island.

Victoria Park Armouries, the oldest still-operating defense base in Canada, is another noteworthy historical highlight. For an insight into the First Nation culture, you will pass through Membertou, a community named for a 17th-century leader of the Mi’kmaw tribe.

In time, true to its amphibious nature, the Harbour Hopper will drive right into the harbor and become a boat. From this unique perspective, you will enjoy a sweeping view of Sydney’s beautiful coastline and skyline. Be sure to look for water birds, which are abundant. You might spot great blue herons, belted kingfishers and arctic terns, a species that may migrate farther than other birds, as many of them travel between the Arctic and Antarctica.
