Hiking Cabo de Gata
ore Estimate Duration
Hike through a starkly beautiful, volcanically formed nature preserve that hugs the coast of one of Europe’s most arid, visually stunning areas.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a picturesque drive around the Gulf of Almeria and on toward seaside San Jose. This lovely village of white-washed buildings lies in the middle of Cabo de Gata, a wild and isolated nature park of volcanic origin.
Upon arriving, you will hike along the park’s gorgeous coast, following a winding path of about three miles between jagged cliffs and sandy beaches on one side and a desert-like landscape on the other side. The views of the Mediterranean will be particularly spectacular.
While the land may look barren at first glance, it is actually full of wildlife that has adapted to the harsh conditions. As you hike along, you may spot rabbits, tortoises and foxes. Birds are also abundant, especially larks and raptors such as peregrine falcons. You might even spot a Bonelli’s eagle soaring above the craggy hills.
In time, you will arrive at Los Genoveses, one of the longest beaches in the park. It is named after the Genoese ships that landed here in 1147 to support Spanish troops in their fight against the Moors. The ruins of the beachside bunker here are from the Spanish Civil War.
After hiking for about two hours, you will return to San Jose, where you may explore on your own during free time.
