Coleton Fishacre House & Gardens
hrs Estimate Duration
Visit an extraordinary country estate whose grounds are listed on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, followed by a stop in freethinking Totnes.
Cruise up the River Dart by ferry, taking in the picturesque countryside. In time, you will disembark at Coleton Fishacre, a beautiful Arts and Crafts country estate constructed in 1925 for the D’Oyly Cartes, a family whose company staged Gilbert and Sullivan light operas.
The home features a minimalist design and is decorated with period furnishings such as a cocktail cabinet and Bluthner piano that evoke the lifestyle and elegance of the Jazz Age. To further immerse yourself in the era, you may even try on vintage clothing and hats. Walking from room to room, it’s easy to imagine living here, enjoying the high life.
The surrounding seaside gardens are just as impressive. Because of the proximity of the Gulfstream, Devon County and the so-called English Riviera enjoy a moist climate that is ideal for exotic subtropical plants.
After visiting Coleton Fishacre, you will drive to nearby Totnes, one of the oldest towns in England. Architectural attractions include a classic Norman castle and a collection of Tudor buildings. The local character is also quite appealing, as Totnes has been hailed as the Capital of New Age Chic. You might browse the shops for environmentally aware clothing or simply soak up the laid-back atmosphere before driving back to Dartmouth.
