    A Baroque Night in Venice

Hear an esteemed orchestra in period costumes perform some of the world’s most recognized Baroque music in a concert hall that dates to the late 16th century.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in Rialto, the geographical heart of Venice. Being the oldest area of town, Rialto is full of historical, culturally important buildings such as Scuola Grande de San Teodoro, which was built in 1580 as a school.

Now a concert hall, it’s an extraordinary setting for a musical performance such as the one that awaits you. After taking a seat in the first-floor salon, be sure to notice the beautiful paintings from the 17th- and 18th centuries that adorn the walls.

The orchestra, Musici Veneziani, is an accomplished group that will be elaborately dressed in Baroque costumes and jewelry. They will play some of the most moving pieces of the Baroque period, including Antonio Vivaldi’s classic “The Four Seasons.” It is said that King Louis XV was so enamored of the “spring” concerti that he insisted that it be performed at his whim, which was often.

Public concerts such as this were rare during the Baroque period that ended in the mid-18th century. These compositions were usually performed in church or in the home of a wealthy patron.

Following the concert, you will return to the pier.

Ride boats around Venice Lagoon and the surrounding islands, hopping on and off at attractions of personal interest, which may include the Leonardo da Vinci Museum.

This excursion will give you complete freedom to explore the destinations that are most appealing to you. Simply hop on one of the boats and then hop off when it reaches an attraction of interest.

Boat Line A offers seven stops, including one at the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, which holds a collection of the genius’ inventions. The machines on display were built according to da Vinci’s designs, and you can test many of them, as they all work perfectly.

Other stops on Line A include St. Mark’s Square, perhaps the most iconic location in Venice, which Napoleon famously called “the most beautiful drawing room in Europe.” You can also visit Lido Island, a long thin sandbar that separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. The cruise terminal is another stop, which will allow you to return whenever you please.

Boat Line B offers three stops, all at neighboring islands. You can hop off a boat at Murano to watch the glass blowers, at Burano to see the colorful houses and at Torcello for a look at the mosaics in the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. As with all the stops, you can stay as long as you like and then hop on another boat when you are ready.

    Wonders of Lucca & Pisa

Discover beautifully preserved Lucca, still within its Renaissance walls and chock full of churches, including a fine cathedral. You’ll see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, along with other impressive structures in Miracle Square. more...

Almost perfectly preserved Lucca still resides within high walls, though they are now topped by green parkland. Take a guided walk through the old town, with its medieval towers and nearly 100 churches. Stroll from piazza to piazza, and absorb the city’s history through its architecture. The Duomo, Lucca’s Romanesque cathedral, dates from the 12th century and features a façade with elaborate reliefs and columns.

The Gothic interior includes an image of Christ on the cross, supposedly carved by Nicodemus, a purported witness of the crucifixion. The Duomo also boasts Tintoretto's magnificent painting of the Last Supper. You’ll have free time in Lucca to explore, do some shopping, or sample the local cuisine.

Once a powerful maritime republic, and a rival to Genoa and Venice, Pisa offers a Renaissance splendor of its own. A short, guided walk leads to the dramatic Miracle Square, with an array of elegant buildings in Pisa’s own Romanesque style.

Here you’ll find the Campo Santo, a cemetery with some handsome architecture; the Baptistery, with a statue of St. John the Baptist on top of its dome; and the Duomo, Pisa’s medieval cathedral. You’ll recognize its freestanding bell tower immediately as the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Galileo is said to have used the 180-foot tower during his experiments with gravity. Today it leans 14-degrees from perpendicular. Recently reopened, admittance to the tower is limited and is not included in this excursion.

Visit two of the Venetian lagoon’s islands, Murano and Burano; the first world-famous center of glass-making and the second renowned for its lace. First you’ll travel along a portion of the beautiful Giudecca Canal passing St. Mark’s Basin and other landmarks, then cross the lagoon to Murano, where you’ll visit a glass factory and have a unique opportunity to see how beautiful Murano glass is made, followed by some time for shopping. After visiting the glass factory, continue with a leisurely trip across the lagoon to lovely little Burano with its gaily painted houses and brightly painted fishing boats. Enjoy a walk through the streets of this charming and picturesque island where fishermen are always mending nets or repairing their boats.

On Burano, one encounters a way of life that is rapidly disappearing. Women sometimes sit in their doorways working on a piece of lace. Burano lace is extremely delicate and time-consuming to create. A small piece may take several weeks to complete, making it highly prized. You'll have a chance to admire some of these works of art when you visit one of the stores that sell the famed Burano lace.

Today, you will discover this lovely city on foot and by water.

An approximately 1-hour drive takes you to Amsterdam’s historic city center where you’ll start your walking tour. Follow your guide past many of the city historic and iconic landmarks such as the floating Flower Market, Mint Tower and Dam Square. Make the most of your time away from the bustle of the town while Kayaking on the River Minija, admiring the gorgeous scenery and discovering what village life is like on a river delta in rural Lithuania.

Drive through the lush countryside as your guide describes points of interest and offers commentary on the history of Lithuania, a country that gained its independence from the Soviets in 1991.

Minija is one of the more fascinating villages in the area, as its main thoroughfare is the Minija River, parts of which are lined with 19th-century wooden houses protected by dikes. Boats are the only practical means of transportation in this village of just a few dozen residents. It’s no wonder that Minija is commonly called the Venice of Lithuania.

Following a short briefing and fitting your life vests, you will ease into a kayak and begin paddling through the river’s typically calm waters. Kayaking offers the opportunity to view the Lithuanian countryside from a unique perspective, taking in the scenery and pausing to enjoy the serenity of the setting. You may encounter other kayakers and anglers fishing for freshwater species such as tench and zander, but the river will most likely be uncrowded. Back on shore, regain some energy with Lithuanian cake and fresh juice before returning to the pier.
