Be swept away on a small group whale watching excursion to the Point Adolphus area, which hosts one of Alaska’s largest resident whale populations. The 24-passenger vessel sits low in the water, putting you eye to eye with whales, sea lions, and harbor seals that make their home in these protected waters. Enjoy the challenge of negotiating several treetop courses equipped with ziplines, playful obstacles and integrated quizzes that will make the experience all the more memorable.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at an adventure park that features several different zipline courses. Following a brief orientation on how to maximize the experience, you will have free time to follow the courses that you find most interesting and suitable.

Four different courses are available, each with its own characteristics. You can travel the same course over and over or move from one to the other at your own pace because the courses are self-guided. Regardless of which course you choose, the ride will be exhilarating as you zip through the treetops high above the forest floor.

You might begin with the easiest course to get your bearings and then try the more challenging courses. Each one features at least a dozen obstacles of various difficulties to make them even more entertaining. All the while, you will wear a harness and gloves for safety.

The obstacles include having to negotiate log bridges and climbing wooden planks to fishermen’s nets. To enhance your understanding of the surrounding forest, you will find interpretative signs and integrated quizzes along the way. It is a fun and exciting way to learn about the natural environment around Hoonah.

Discover the natural beauty surrounding Hoonah on an exhilarating helicopter ride and by biking and hiking down a forested mountain to a secluded beach.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive through Hoonah, the largest Tlingit community in Alaska. A brief orientation at a nearby heli-pad follows, after which you will fly off in a helicopter with your bike attached, taking in the magnificent scenery of dense woodlands, majestic mountains and pristine waterways dotted with islands. Little has changed in the landscape since the Tlingit first settled the area centuries ago.

In time, the helicopter will touch down on the summit of a mountain, where you will change modes of transportation. You will descend by mountain bike, following a trail that will present an entirely different perspective of the unspoiled wilderness. From ground level, you will enjoy a more intimate, up-close look at the natural beauty of Chichagof Island.

On occasion, you will stop to hike to fascinating points of interest, as the guide describes the flora and fauna and regales you with stories of the island’s history. Much of it will involve the Tlingits, who permanently settled here in 1754 when advancing glaciers forced them south to what would become Hoonah. In the Tlingit language, Hoonah means “where the north wind doesn’t blow.”

Your adventurous bike ride will conclude at the beach, where you will enjoy a bit of free time to explore and sample traditional Tlingit foods including smoked salmon, beach asparagus, and other local samples depending on season and availability. Then, your helicopter will return to take you back to town. Don’t forget to look up and appreciate the route you just biked.

Fly over the gorgeous Alaskan wilderness in a helicopter before landing at a secluded beach to learn about the indigenous Tlingit tribe and sample their traditional cuisine.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive through Hoonah, the largest Tlingit community in Alaska. A brief orientation at a nearby heli-pad follows, after which you will fly off in a helicopter, taking in the magnificent scenery of dense woodlands, majestic mountains and pristine waterways dotted with islands.

It is all part of the Tongass National Forest, the nation’s largest national forest and the world’s largest temperate rainforest. Little has changed in the landscape since the Tlingit tribe first settled here centuries ago. President Theodore Roosevelt legally protected that land by designating the forest as a preserve in the early 1900s.

In time, the helicopter will touch down on a secluded beach, where you will learn about the founding Tlingits. While you will discover much about their history and how they migrated here, most of your cultural immersion will revolve around traditional Tlingit cuisine.

Living off the land is a way of life among the tribe. As the locals say, “When the tide is out, the table is set.” Accordingly, you will sample delicacies from the sea such as salmon, smoked and prepared using methods that generations upon generations have handed down. You may also learn how the Tlingits preserve their fish by kippering.

Fly over the pristine waterways and stunning terrain beyond Hoonah and into a national park so inspirational that UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief but picturesque drive through Hoonah, the largest Tlingit community in the world. Upon arriving at the airport, you will board an aircraft that is ideal for viewing the vast Alaskan wilderness.

During your time in the air, you will look down on some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable. You can expect to fly over thundering waterfalls, mountain lakes, deep crevasses and azure pools that glacier meltwater has formed. Few landscapes can match the majesty and grandeur of the unspoiled hinterlands of Chichagof Island and beyond.

In time, you will fly over Point Adolphus at an altitude that allows you to spot marine creatures in the water and along the shore. This area boasts the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, and you may well spot them breaching the water’s surface. You might also observe Dall’s porpoises, Stellar sea lions and orca whales.

Once you reach Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, the pilot will describe how the land appeared in the last Ice Age and the characteristics of the terrestrial and tidewater glaciers that you will see below. Deemed a World Heritage site for its stunning natural beauty, the 25-million-acre park is one of the world’s largest protected areas. As you will witness firsthand, it is inspirational in every direction.
