Depart Hilo Pier and head to Liliokulani Gardens with views of Hilo and the mountains. Proceed through historic downtown Hilo and up to Rainbow Falls. Continue on to new Saddle Road Highway stopping at scenic points of interest until reaching the vast lava fields of Mauna Loa Mountain. Disembark and experience this amazing area, while gaining an understanding of how this huge Island was formed and continues to grow.
Next stop is Mauna Kea Recreation Park, which has been recently upgraded with excellent amenities and nice views and limited vending. Walk around the park (7000 foot elevation) and take pictures of the 3 mountains. The journey back is very different even though you are on the same road and again, stop at scenic points of interest and possibly see volcanic activity at a great distance. Continuing back into Hilo drive to Mauna Loa Macnut Farm with its informational displays and broad range of products and snacks as well as ice cream, sandwiches and coffee (not included). As this tour does go to 7000 ft. it is highly recommended that guests have good mobility and can walk at least 100 yards unaided. The highway is new and of US highway standards.
