Tour the hauntingly beautiful countryside north of Almeria, stopping in the gorgeous, whitewashed village of Mojacar and in a volcanically formed natural reserve.
Setting off from the pier, it's a northeasterly drive toward Mojacar, a picturesque village perched on a hillside above the Mediterranean Sea. Considering the rocky, sparsely vegetated terrain surrounding Mojacar, it looks like an inviting oasis. Perhaps that's why it has been conquered so often over the centuries, although it is most likely because it was a predominantly Muslim town on the Christian frontier. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks and Moors have all lived here, and the architecture reflects those influences. The buildings are clustered together, almost atop each other, and uniformly whitewashed, many of them designed with an Arab flair, as Mojacar flourished under its Moorish rule. It was during this period that the Mojacar castle was built and the village walls fortified.
You'll experience Mojacar the best way possible: with a guided walk through its narrow intertwined streets, all the while catching glimpses of the spectacular views in the distance. Be sure to look for Indalo symbols that adorn many of the buildings. Shaped like a stick figure man with a crescent over his head, the ancient symbol is considered lucky.
After approximately two hours in Mojacar, rejoin your coach for a panoramic drive through Cabo de Gata-Níjar, a 175-square-mile nature reserve that extends into the sea. Being volcanically formed, the reserve is wonderfully scenic with jagged sea cliffs, sand dunes, and both wetlands and expansive stretches of arid terrain. Following a photo stop at a premier vantage point, you will make the hour-long drive back to the pier in Almeria.
