Delve into Iceland’s rich maritime history by visiting several museums devoted to fishing and by sampling local fish caught using traditional methods.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at the Ósvör Museum, which is housed in a collection of stone and turf buildings along the coast. A curator dressed as a 19th-century fisherman in a sheepskin coated with fish oil will lead you through the museum and explain how fish were traditionally caught, salted and dried to preserve them. Be sure to notice the replica of an old wooden fishing boat with a large round stone for an anchor.

Your next stop will be remote Suðureyri, a fishing village known for its sustainable, environmentally conscious practices. The fishermen only use traditional methods to catch fish, which reduces the impact on the environment. Amazingly, most of the meat is exported and for sale in European markets within just 36 hours from the time it was caught.

To enhance your historical understanding of Icelandic fishing, you will browse some early fishing huts and drying sheds in Suðureyri. You will also have the opportunity to sample some of the freshly caught fish, most likely cod and halibut.

Back in Ísafjörður, you will browse the Maritime Museum for yet another glimpse into Iceland’s seafaring past. The vast collection of primarily fishing artifacts is displayed in a renovated 18th-century house. You will also see historical fishing boats and perhaps unexpectedly a large collection of accordions.
