Treat your inner adventurer to an exhilarating multi-transport survey of the Southern Alps high country by coach, 4x4 touring vehicle and jet boat. It all starts sedately enough, as you head out by motorcoach into the fertile earthen patchwork of the Canterbury Plains – where the island grows its wheat and grazes its cattle. But don’t get too comfortable; the scenery changes dramatically as you reach Rubicon Station on the banks of the spectacular Waimakariri river gorge and make the switch into rugged 4x4 touring mode. Piloted with skill around Rubicon and Mt Torlesse Station, bouncing heartily across a spectacular landscape framed by jagged Southern Alp peaks and gorges, you’re bound to fill your camera with Facebook-likeable shots. A well-deserved stop for lunch provides a break from the action, but it won’t last. Soon enough, you’ll shift back into thrill gear as you board a lightning-fast jet boat capable of 360-degree spins and strap in for a ride up the steep-walled Waimakariri River gorge to Stair Case Viaduct. After that little jaunt, the coach drive back to Lyttelton will feel like slow motion.

Follow a local guide on an enlightening walk through Lisbon’s most atmospheric districts, pausing at various venues to sample Portuguese delicacies. In the Baixa district, you will stop at Manteigaris Silva, a delicatessen that dates to the 19th century. Chances are, you will sample local ham and cheeses such as Serra da Estrela. You will then head to Mouraria, a Moorish-influenced district that is considered the birthplace of the music genre fado. There you will be served a sweet, cherry liqueur known as ginja. A tram ride with the locals will bring you to the historical Graça district, where you will become even more familiar with daily life in Lisbon. Discover highlights of beguiling Mossel Bay and explore a museum complex dedicated to the first European to land in South Africa. Enjoy an enlightening drive around Mossel Bay, a beach-blessed city in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains that was named by a Dutch explorer in 1601, when he found a huge collection of mussel shells in a nearby cave. As you travel along the town’s charming streets, you’ll learn that South Africa’s first post office was established here centuries ago after sailors began leaving letters in the cleft of a milkwood tree so that other sailors could deliver them on their journeys.

See that revered, 500-year-old tree, now a National Monument, standing near the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, which is named for a Portuguese navigator who was the first European to set foot in South Africa in his search for a spice route to the Far East. During your time at the complex, perhaps you’ll visit the absorbing Shell Museum or the Maritime Museum, where a replica of Dias’ ship is on exhibit, along with early maps and navigation instruments. Experience the compelling sites and seafaring history of enchanting Mossel Bay on this captivating excursion.

Spend hours relaxing however you please at the Beach Escape Beach Club in nearby Mahahual. After a brief orientation to help you maximize the experience, you will be free to enjoy the club’s amenities, which are considerable and all offered for your enjoyment. You might stretch out on a lounge chair and bask in the sun, take a refreshing swim in the sea and gather around the thatched-roof poolside bar, which will be open for unlimited drinks the entire time. One end of the Beach Escape is typically busier and more party-oriented, while the other end by the pier is quieter, allowing you to easily find an ideal spot to make the most of your free time. If you wish to explore offshore, kayaks are available. The beach club is located right on the boardwalk at Fisherman’s Village, a great place for people-watching and dining on your own as there are plenty of restaurants.

Your host will be a farmer that tends payoya goats and Grazalemeña sheep, whose milk is used to produce the cheeses. The most well-known and award-winning cheese is El Bosqueño, a smooth textured, light-colored cheese. The farmer will lead you through the fields where the goats and sheep graze and walk you through the cheese-making process step by step. You will also browse a cheese museum with displays of cheese-making hand tools and exhibits detailing the history of cheese production in the area. Afterwards, you will enjoy a sampling that may include an emborrado cheese cured in olive oil and wheat bran. Other cheeses produced here are cured with fresh spices such as rosemary and paprika. To complement the experience, you will be served a glass of locally produced wine.

Mingle with the locals at a vibrant marketplace and with fishermen along the waterfront in Setubal. The city sits atop a Roman fishing town that a tsunami destroyed in the 5th century, and parts of it have been excavated. Fishing is still essential to Setubal, as you will discover at a bustling downtown market. Sardines, cuttlefish, oysters—they are all here on display, fresh from the docks where the fishermen have brought their morning’s catch. The guide will point out some of the most unusual species and introduce you to the vendors. While walking along a nearby promenade, you will likely see fishermen tending their nets. This will present another opportunity to interact with the locals and ask about their traditional livelihood, which new technology continues to influence. For a taste of the seafood that comes into Setubal, you will dine at a restaurant in town. The menu will include the local specialty “choco frito,” which is fried cuttlefish.

Cruise the tranquil waters of Long Lake on a Mississippi River-style paddle-wheeler as a prelude to taking a hay ride through the orchards and fields of a working farm.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely drive inland to the town of Naples, which perches at the end of Long Lake. Here, you will board the Songo River Queen II, a replica of a Mississippi River paddle-wheel boat. You will have plenty of room to settle in and stretch out, as the 93-foot-long boat has two decks, one fully shaded.

As you cruise along the glass-smooth lake, you will take in the gorgeous natural views. In the distance, you will spot Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast, and aptly named Pleasant Mountain close by. Other outstanding sights include Arrowhead Point jutting out from the shoreline and forested Pine Island off Mast Cove.

Along the way, you will be served a lobster roll lunch, a classic Maine dish. Dessert will wait until you arrive at your next destination, Pietree Orchard. Author Tabitha King, wife of author Stephen King, owns this working farm, which has been operating for nearly 80 years.

You will enjoy an authentic farm experience by taking a leisurely hay ride through the property. The driver will describe the environmentally friendly farming methods and the fruits and produce that flourish here

Enjoy an enlightening look at Juneau on the way to an unexpectedly luxuriant botanical garden that follows sustainable practices. After taking in several key attractions in Alaska’s capital city, you will pause at Brotherhood Bridge, which is dedicated to the Alaska Native Brotherhood, which has advocated civil rights for the state’s indigenous people for more than a century. The bridge also offers a grand view of Mendenhall Glacier in the distance. You will be treated to a different perspective of the glacier as you ride a covered shuttle through the Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure. Located in America’s largest national forest, this natural wonderland presents an incredible array of specimens, many of which will be in bloom. Although the flower towers on upside-down trees are the signature attraction, there is plenty more see. During the bonus behind-the-scenes tour of the greenhouses, you will learn some gardening tips and hear about ways that plants benefit the environment.
