SHORE EXCURSIONS

Look for bears, deer and bald eagles in their natural habitats from an elevated observation area in the remote Spasski River Valley. As you leave Hoonah, Alaska’s largest Tlingit Indigenous settlement, the guide will enlighten you with stories about the Tlingits and their fascinating history. Upon reaching the valley, you will walk along a gravel path and boardwalk to the elevated viewing platform. Be on the lookout for the diverse wildlife that makes its home here, including grizzly bears, which are highly intelligent omnivores that primarily eat vegetation. While this is an excellent area to observe animals, they roam freely, so there are no guarantees that you will see them. The Sitka black-tail deer is another native that may be spotted from the observation area, as well as land otters, mink and marten. And don’t forget to look skyward for bald eagles, a highly efficient bird of prey that frequents the valley.

Enjoy beautiful views of Maine's famous rocky coastline as well as a visit to the charming coastal village of Kennebunkport, which gained worldwide exposure as the summer home of the Bush family. Located just 45 minutes from Portland, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through Kennebunkport passing the stunning mansions that were built by wealthy sea captains and merchants in the 1700’s and 1800’s.

A stop will be made in the center of town at Dock Square to enjoy some free time to stroll the picturesque streets lined with shops, galleries, unique boutiques, antique stores, restaurants, and pubs. Your return route will take you past Walker's Point, and the Bush estate where world leaders often gathered when George H. Bush was president.

She not only creates new land, but also destroys what stands in the path of the lava, which is known as “frozen fire” once it cools and hardens. However, the historical Painted Church was spared during Kīlauea’s eruption in 1990 when the congregants raised the church onto a trailer and moved it to safety. This tour combines the splendor of visiting Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area with a comfortable trip into the rainforest at Glacier Gardens. Leaving the ship take a drive by coach over the panoramic road to a viewpoint from where you can see the magnificent view of Dubrovnik and its Riviera. Head toward the picturesque seaside resort town of Cavtat. Here, you’ll have opportunity for a pleasant walk along the sea front promenade or have a coffee in one of many cafes. Drive along the eastern coast of the Dubrovnik Riviera toward Komaji Village to visit a winery. Upon arrival, proceed to the Crvik family vineyards. The owner of the winery will greet you on arrival and give you a presentation about his wines and show you the production process. Following the tasting, you’ll re-board your coach and depart for Dubrovnik. The Old Town is unique for its marble-paved squares, cobbled streets, tall houses, churches, palaces, fountains, and museums, all built from the same light-colored stone. Along the way, you’ll visit the Dominican Monastery, inside where you’ll discover the finest collection of Renaissance paintings in Dubrovnik. Among the many works by local and Italian masters is a painting by Tizian. After the walking tour, you’ll have some free time to explore on your own.

At the tip of a majestic fjord where the waters of the Saguenay and Saint Lawrence Rivers meet lies the charming village of Saguenay. In the 1600’s, France established its first fur trading post and colonization of the area soon followed. you’ll learn about the early 20th century brought exploitation of the river with logging, the pulp and paper industries, and aluminum production.

Once arrived in Chicoutimi, you’ll drive along its main street – rue Racine – and its Old Port. A photo opportunity will be made the Little White House that miraculously survived the Flood of 1996. A photo will also be made at the Pulp Mill of Chicoutimi. Founded in 1898, the mill played an important role in the development of the area. Also noted as the first French Canadian owned Pulp Company the mill produced a high quality pulp that was exported throughout the world. You’ll then drive by the Ha! Ha! Pyramid in La Baie district where you’ll learn of the great flood of 1996 that devastated the region and proved to be one of Canada’s greatest natural disasters.

Start your tour in Skagway’s historic downtown area as your guide points out places of interest and regales you with tales of the famous and foolhardy. Wind through streets lined with wooden boardwalks and false fronted buildings en route to Scenic Overlook, Gold Rush Cemetery and Liarsville. Enjoy a dining experience you'll never forget at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp. Your meal is prepared over an open wood fire using recipes from 1898. Sit down for freshly grilled filet of wild Alaskan salmon, baked chicken, rice pilaf, a variety of salads, baked beans, cornbread, coffee, lemonade and dessert. After your meal gather at the Liarsville Hippodrome where a cast of sourdoughs and dance hall girls will dazzle you with melodrama, recite Robert Service poetry and teach you the art of gold panning. Once you've made your fortune, take time to wander through the camp and visit the general store, saloon, bordello and laundry tents to view the antiques and vintage clothing left behind. Peninsula Valdez is one of the finest wildlife reserves in South America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It provides an outstanding natural habitat for sea lions, elephant seals, fur seals and a variety of birds. Enjoy a brief stop at the small Visitors Center to view exhibits on the flora and fauna of the Peninsula.

Visit Caleta Valdes on the eastern shore, a sheltered bay with a long gravel spit onto which elephant seals and others haul up in the spring. You’ll spend some time here to watch the wildlife from a distance. Nearby, there may be a possibility to view a very small and new penguin colony. Stop to watch one of the peninsula’s major sea lion colonies near Puerto Piramides. A boxed lunch is provided.

Drive around a lake that is a natural phenomenon of sorts, as its water disappears each autumn, leaving the lake dry until the winter rainy season. For an overview of the lake’s unusual hydrological system, you will first browse a museum with a scale working model of Lake Cerknica, showing how each year it drains into the porous karst that lies beneath the lakebed. A leisurely walk around the shore will add another dimension to your understanding of this well-known “intermittent lake,” as it’s known geologically. When full, the lake is the largest in Slovenia. Much of the flora and fauna changes seasonally with the water level. Regardless of when you visit, you can expect to see flowering orchids, medicinal plants, and countless birds, all of which the naturalist will describe in fascinating detail. Interact with some of Alaska’s most iconic animals at the Kroschel Wildlife Center, a wilderness reserve for orphaned and injured creatures. The drive there will set the stage for this hands-on experience as you will travel through the Chilkat Mountains, a forested area where many of the animals were rescued. As an introduction, Steve Kroschel will describe how he founded his namesake reserve and demonstrate how the caretakers work with the rescued animals to assist in their recovery. He may feed them as well, so you can see their special dietary needs are met. It will then be your turn to interact with the wildlife, which may include wolf pups, caribou, pine martens and foxes. The center is also home to birds of prey such as the majestic snowy owl, which is almost entirely white when fully grown. You can expect your one-on-one experiences with the animals to be immensely fulfilling and enlightening.

Enjoy the fun and adventure of Corfu’s countryside while traveling over stony trails through the olive groves. You’ll catch glimpses of the sparkling Ionian Sea, beautiful green hills and have a glimpse of the traditional way of life led by many of the local people. After picking up your 4x4 vehicle at the pier, your guide will lead you up the main coastal road to the northeast of the island. You’ll then take small country roads to quaint villages, stopping at one of the most charming and oldest on the island to take in the views.

Take an uphill narrow winding road (with 27 zigzag turns) to the Sokraki where you’ll stop to admire one of the most fantastic panoramic views. Following a dusty road, you’ll arrive at Troumbetta. You’ll pass through other picturesque sites and stop at Bella Vista to take in more spectacular views and enjoy some refreshments and Greek snacks. You’ll also visit a traditional Koum Kouat distillery. The Koum Kouat citrus fruit, a variety which only grows in Corfu, is made into one of the island's most famous products, a liqueur with the same name, plus fruit preserved sweets. You’ll be able to view a small exhibition of antique distillery equipment, sample the produce and purchase local liquors.

Take a scenic ride through downtown Acapulco and along the coast, heading south. About 20 miles away, on a tranquil beach, is the Sea Turtle Rescue Center. Operated by a local environmentalist, the center works to improve the chances of survival for the endangered species of Golfina sea turtles. Learn how the program works and see the baby turtles in various stages of development, from their eggs to the holding tanks where the hatchlings are ready to return to the sea.

Walk down to the shoreline where the turtles will be named before they are released into the water. The number of turtles that are ready for release may not always match the number of participants. A short shopping stop will be made on the way back to your ship.

During free time, you can explore the brightly colored Old Town, which is easy to navigate because the streets follow a rectangular grid pattern designed in Britain. You can expect to see 18th-century wooden buildings and perhaps a replica of the Bluenose, Canada’s legendary racing ship that was launched here in 1921.
