Discover highlights of beguiling Mossel Bay and explore a museum complex dedicated to the first European to land in South Africa. Enjoy an enlightening drive around Mossel Bay, a beach-blessed city in the shadow of the Outeniqua Mountains that was named by a Dutch explorer in 1601, when he found a huge collection of mussel shells in a nearby cave. As you travel along the town’s charming streets, you’ll learn that South Africa’s first post office was established here centuries ago after sailors began leaving letters in the cleft of a milkwood tree so that other sailors could deliver them on their journeys.

See that revered, 500-year-old tree, now a National Monument, standing near the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex, which is named for a Portuguese navigator who was the first European to set foot in South Africa in his search for a spice route to the Far East. During your time at the complex, perhaps you’ll visit the absorbing Shell Museum or the Maritime Museum, where a replica of Dias’ ship is on exhibit, along with early maps and navigation instruments. Experience the compelling sites and seafaring history of enchanting Mossel Bay on this captivating excursion.

    Melissani & Drogarati Cave

Behold the natural attractions of Cephalonia, including those beneath the surface, such as the Drogarati Cave and subterranean Melissani Lake.

Departing from the pier, you'll drive toward the eastern shore of Cephalonia, the largest Ionian island. Arriving at the Drogarati Cave, you'll descend a flight of stairs into a large cavern which is lighted for dramatic effect. Stalactites hang from the ceiling like jagged curtains, and ancient stalagmites reach up from the rocky floor. The colors are predominately red, orange, yellow and white, from the iron content in the rock and the layers of chalk and limestone.

Although estimated to be 100 million years old, the cave wasn't discovered until about 300 years ago when a violent earthquake opened an entrance. Inside the cave's Chamber of Exaltation, the acoustics are considered near perfect, and concert events are often held in its voluminous interior. Even the famed opera soprano, Maria Callas, sang here.

Continuing on, you will travel in a northerly direction, passing the town of Sami en route to the renowned Melissani Lake. This underground phenomenon looks absolutely magical in the shafts of light that come from 100 feet above, where parts of the ceiling collapsed decades ago. You'll enter the lake by small boat, paddled in so it hardly disturbs the surface of the water, which is a brackish mix of saltwater from the Ionian Sea and freshwater that originated back in Argostoli and then flowed across the island. The stalactites hanging from the ceiling here are estimated to be at least 20,000 years old.

Afterwards, you'll return to Argostoli via a picturesque coastal route that offers spectacular views across the strait to the island of Ithaca, and further along, Myrtos and its dramatic, sheer white cliffs.

Often described as the "Seven Worlds of Wonder," with its seven distinct habitats, Phinda is home to an abundance of wildlife from the largest lion to the smallest antelope. This fully inclusive program promises to be an unforgettable experience.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

Program details and the number of game drives are subject to change depending on flight details:

    DAY 1
Disembark in Port Elizabeth and transfer to the airport to check-in for a flight to Durban.

On arrival at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, an English-speaking representative will meet and accompany you on a road transfer to Phinda Private Game Reserve. A packed lunch will be included for the journey. The travel time is approximately 4 hours.

Situated in the lush Maputaland region in northern KwaZulu-Natal and bordering the World Heritage Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, Phinda comprises seven distinct habitats which shelter an abundance of wildlife including Africa’s Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo) and over 380 bird species.

Phinda Forest Lodge is cradled in a maze of ancient vegetation. Each air-conditioned suite provides serene, reflective spaces to watch the secrets of the forest unfold. Tiny suni and red duiker graze among the vines and massive tree trunks, and a short walk to the main guest area could easily become a close encounter with a graceful nyala or an agile impala.

On arrival at the main entrance gate, you will be met by game rangers who will transfer you to your lodge in 4-wheel drive open vehicles. Check-in and then you will be shown to your room.

Enjoy some time to check out your new surroundings before dinner at the lodge and overnight.

    DAY 2
The day begins with an early morning wake-up call. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served in the lounge area before you depart on an early morning game-drive accompanied by your rangers and trackers. Game drives are conducted in 4-wheel drive open vehicles, allowing for total freedom of movement and the ability to leave the road and track down Africa's Big 5.

Return to the lodge for breakfast followed by time at leisure to relax around the lodge as you wish. The lodge includes a rim-flow swimming pool at the edge of the forest, an interactive kitchen, Safari Shop, traditional boma for open-air dining and in-room massage treatments. Optional (additional cost) activities may be available and are bookable only through the lodge while you are there. These include Zulu village tours, Maputaland beach adventures, night turtle drives (seasonal), scuba safaris, an ocean safari, black rhino tracking on foot as well as specialist safaris such as birding, photographic, rhino notching, tracking, walking, family and private safaris.

Gather for high tea before departing on an afternoon game drive. Sundowners and light snacks will be served at a clearing in the bush following your game drive with the possibility of viewing several nocturnal wildlife species. After dark, spotlights are used, providing you with the opportunity to view nocturnal creatures and carnivores on the hunt.

Return to the lodge to freshen up before dinner is served.

    DAY 3
Enjoy one final early morning game drive and then return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out formalities.

Thereafter transfer to the main entrance where you will board a vehicle for your road transfer to Richard’s Bay Harbour where you will re-board the ship.

Enjoy an enlightening tour of Naples by visiting Spaccanapoli, the street that divides the city, and by savoring folded pizza, a classic Neapolitan treat.

After departing from the pier, you will begin a panoramic drive around Naples, taking in the views from locales such as Posillipo Hill in one of the city’s most affluent areas. Along the way, you will pass the imposing Castle Nuovo.

While parts of it date to the 13th century, it is still known as the new castle to distinguish it from the famed Egg Castle, which began as a 1st-century Roman villa. Castle Nuovo’s five towers make it one of Naples’ most recognizable landmarks. You will also see the Egg Castle, which holds a commanding position on the sea.

In time, you will reach Spaccanapoli, a long street whose name means “Naples splitter,” a reference to it seeming to divide the city in two. Here, you will visit the Jesuit church Gesú Nuovo and the Church of Santa Chiara, which was founded in 1310 and features an austere Provencal-Gothic style. Much of Santa Chiara had to be rebuilt after World War II.

For an even more authentic glimpse into daily life, you will walk through the narrow streets of Old Town, which UNESCO has declared a Cultural Heritage site. As you will discover, there is no better setting to eat portafoglio or folded pizza, as the dish was invented in Naples. A cup of fresh espresso at a nearby café standing at the counter as Neapolitan does will top off the experience.

Stroll through colonial Luderitz and admire the spectacular architecture built during the town’s heyday at the beginning of the 20th century, when diamonds were discovered nearby.

After walking from the pier, you will soon be immersed in the German ambiance of bayside Luderitz. Although Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed here in 1488, the area remained unsettled until German tobacco merchant Adolf Luderitz purchased much of the surrounding land nearly 400 years later. The sleepy port soon became an important supply post for Germany’s colonization of southwest Africa, and Luderitz grew accordingly, especially after diamonds were discovered in the nearby Namib Desert.

As you approach Luderitz’s prominent Diamond Hill, you will see Goerke Haus, one of the most extravagant mansions built during the boom at the start of the 20th century. Renovated and full of period furnishings, the estate was built for diamond entrepreneur Hans Goerke in an Art Nouveau style with German and African themes.

Felsenkirche is another outstanding Diamond Hill landmark. The Evangelical Lutheran church was built in 1912 with private donations from German citizens and is renowned for the stained-glass panel above its altar, which Emperor Wilhelm II donated.

Finally, there is Luderitz Museum, where you will learn more about Germany’s colonization efforts, the diamond industry and Namibia’s flora and fauna. Interesting artifacts include whalebones, photos of the indigenous people and colonial mining equipment. After visiting, you may follow the guide back to the pier or return later on your own.
