See how coffee is grown and harvested through sustainable farming at a premium coffee estate, and then enjoy lunch at a small hotel with a charming colonial ambiance.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a meandering drive into the beautiful interior of Costa Rica. In the shadow of two national parks, you will find Golden Bean Coffee Tour, an estate that has been growing and harvesting coffee for nearly a century.

Here, you will watch the process firsthand and step by step. The cherries or fruit of the coffee trees is hand-picked, fermented, dried, husking and graded, all before being roasted. You will also observe this latter process, one of the key steps that imparts flavor.

The resulting beans are Universal Trade Zone-certified, a distinction given only to products grown with sustainable farming techniques. It is a difference that you can taste, as you will discover over a cup of freshly brewed coffee. The guide will also offer tips on how to maximize the flavor of the coffee that you brew at home.

Golden Bean Coffee Tour is located in one of Costa Rica’s eight coffee regions, each with its own microclimate. Some of the coffees are chocolaty, others fruity and still others impart complex citrus flavors.

Following your immersion into the world of coffee, you will continue on to the exclusive boutique hotel Casa Turire for lunch. Afterwards, you will be free to stroll the hotel grounds.

Drive along the immensely scenic coast of the Limón Province to a rescue center that rehabilitates injured, orphaned and ailing animals from throughout Costa Rica. As you will discover while touring the facility, its goal is to provide a temporary home to indigenous creatures until they can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. You can expect to watch the veterinarians and caregivers feeding the animals and administering medicine, all in hopes of giving them the best chance of survival. Although the types of animals are constantly changing, chances are, you will see sloths, monkeys, anteaters and birds, including hawks, parrots and toucans. Many of the animals are injured when they inadvertently touch electrical lines, so a substantial percentage of the donations are used to fund insulating the wires. It will be heartwarming to see the wildlife in various stages of rehabilitation and hear how other animals were successfully re-introduced into their natural habitats.

Paddle through the calm waters of a jungle lagoon surrounded by rainforest and then watch a rousing calypso performance.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a meandering drive down the coast to the Hotel Colon Caribe, your point of embarkation for kayaking. Following a brief introduction on how best to maximize your experience, you will ease into a kayak and paddle off.

You will be surrounded by rainforest as you kayak through the glassy waters at a comfortable pace. The guide will point out the most interesting flora and fauna. You might hear the booming cries of howler monkeys from deep in the forest, watch iguanas basking in the sun and see birds such as ruddy-tailed flycatchers and red-capped manakins flitting through the trees. You might also spot Costa Rica’s national bird, the clay-colored thrush.

Because kayaking is much quieter and less obtrusive than a boat, you should be able to observe the animals without disturbing their natural behavior. It will be immensely rewarding to watch the indigenous wildlife and migratory birds in such an environment.

After you disembark the kayak, the mood will change dramatically, as you will be treated to a lively calypso show. This Afro-Caribbean style of folk music has been popular in Costa Rica since the late 1800s. The lyrics typically tell stories about families, the beauty of the Caribbean and the struggles of the Afro-Caribbean people. You can expect it to be a memorable performance.

Raft down one of the world’s most celebrated white-water rivers as it winds through a dense rainforest teeming with wildlife, especially birds. After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a scenic drive into Costa Rica’s interior north of Limon, where the Pacuare River winds through primordial rainforest on its way to the Caribbean Sea. The river is one of the world’s top sites for white-water rafting and is incredibly scenic, especially in the section that you will raft.

Following a brief orientation, you will embark the raft and head downstream with the current. You will raft through Class II and Class III rapids, which are considered moderate to moderately difficult. The expert guide will instruct you on when to paddle, so you can skillfully maneuver around the river rocks and maximize your experience on the water.

You can expect it to be an exhilarating adventure as you race down the rapids and glide through the calm pools between the rapids. Be sure to scan the jungle for animals during these breaks from the stronger rapids. Chances are, you will spot monkeys in the trees and all sorts of birds, including toucans, herons and black-cheeked woodpeckers.

In time, you will stop along the river for a hearty lunch and to admire the unspoiled scenery up close. Although the Pacuare River is easily accessible in areas, much of it courses through wilderness that is extraordinarily remote.

Many consider Limón to be a magical place and with its lush rainforest and amazing vistas. Join us as we explore the region and learn about its history and people; take a pleasant stroll through the tropical rain forest and cruise the Tortuguero Canals in this half day excursion.

Travel in air-conditioned comfort as your guide points out places of interest around the city that retain its old roots. Limón was originally founded as a city to ship bananas to Europe and North America. As you drive past quaint villages and fertile plantations, you will enjoy a walk through the rainforest using cemented walkways. As you saunter along keep your eyes open (and camera ready!) for wildlife that might peek out, such as monkeys and other creatures that call this paradise home.

Next, board an open-air covered boat for a journey along the peaceful Tortuguero Canals, also known as the Caribbean version of the Amazon. Your boat ride offers one of the most exuberant landscapes in Costa Rica, with a rich biological diversity and more than 400 species of trees, 2,000 species of other plants and 60 species of amphibians. Birds common along the canals which you may see include green and great blue herons, egrets, belted kingfishers and jacanas. Spend hours relaxing on a private beach at a boutique hotel within a wildlife and marine refuge that is wonderfully unspoiled.

After departing from the pier, you will travel south along the coast to Manzanillo, a laid-back fishing village in the heart of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife and Marine Refuge. The natural beauty is absolutely stunning as you will soon discover at Almonds and Corals, an eco-conscious hotel that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.

During the hours spent here, you will be free to enjoy the amenities as a guest of the hotel. You might stretch out in a lounger and bask in the sun, stroll the idyllic shoreline and read in the shade of a towering palm tree. The waters here are typically calm and clear with all the makings for a refreshing swim. There is also a whirlpool where you can ease into the swirling hot water and completely relax.

Because of the hotel’s location within the wildlife refuge, you might hear monkeys chattering in the treetops and see colorful tropical birds such as keel-billed toucans flying by. Sea turtles are also abundant, especially during the season that they lay eggs on the beach.

To enhance your time at the hotel and offer a glimpse into the local culture, you will enjoy calypso music. This Afro-Caribbean style of folk music has been popular in Costa Rica since the late 1800s. The lyrics typically tell stories about families, the beauty of the Caribbean and the struggles of the Afro-Caribbean people.
