Experience Bruges like a local by exploring areas off the beaten path but still in the shadow of landmarks such as Kruispoort. Although you will stop at this 15th-century gate, the sites that lie ahead will reveal a lesser-known but not less spectacular side of Bruges. You will see windmills along medieval ramparts, follow atmospheric lanes through residential neighborhoods and pause at the bridges and inner canals that gave Bruges its nickname, the Venice of the North. Upon arriving in St. Anne’s, you will behold the Jerusalem Chapel, which was designed to mirror the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. By the 16th century, Bruges had become a textile center for woven lace, and you will observe a demonstration of this artisan trade that continues to flourish. Another way to become immersed in local life is at the Markt, a sprawling square that has been a marketplace for more than 1,000 years.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
    • Explore atmospheric areas of Bruges that are typically unknown to all but the locals.
    • Cross landmark canals that gave Bruges its nickname, the Venice of the North.
    • Watch a demonstration of lace making, a trade that has flourished in Bruges for centuries.

Explore the contemporary village of Port Grimaud, whose winding canals resemble Venice, and ascend to atmospheric medieval Grimaud on this tour of contrasts. You’ll enjoy a leisurely drive along the coast to waterfront Port Grimaud, a pedestrian-friendly village designed in the 1960s to evoke Venice by means of its intricate network of canals. During your visit, you’ll delight in arched bridges spanning the narrow waterways and colorful homes built to the water’s edge. Travel to Grimaud, a hilltop hamlet that has lovingly retained its feudal character. Behold the ruins of an 11th-century château that overlooks the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and discover the heart of the village, a warren of narrow streets lined with beautifully restored 15th-century houses. Pass historically significant dwellings that are painted in pastel colors and feature unusual door frames carved from black lava. You’ll agree the town’s ancient fountains, wrought-iron balconies adorned with bright flowers and centuries-old churches make it seem as if time has stood still.

    • Feel transported to Venice in Port Grimaud, a 1960s seaside village interwoven by countless canals.
    • Cross quaint arched bridges over glittering canals lined with multi-hued homes.
    • Visit the superb medieval village of Grimaud, set high above the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.
    • Wander immaculately preserved 15th-century streets boasting historic stone-built homes.

Sail a catamaran along the wide Capibaribe River through downtown Recife and then enjoy some free time shopping in a mall that was formerly a prison.

Departing from the pier, it’s a short transfer to a nearby dock and your awaiting catamaran. The double-hulled vessel offers a unique and wonderful way to view Recife, as the city was founded on three islands separated by various waterways. Cruising through the arteries of the Capibaribe River, you will soon understand why Recife is known as “Brazil’s Venice.”

Nearly 40 bridges connect the islands, whose architecture ranges from soaring skyscrapers to lovely colonial mansions. The exact sights on the cruise will depend on the route that the captain choses, but you can expect to see a vast contrast in the buildings and bridges. Some may be Dutch influenced, others will be sleek and modern, and still others will reflect different historical periods. The Capibaribe River is named for the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which inhabited the shoreline centuries ago.

After your nearly ninety-minute scenic cruise, you will disembark the catamaran and drive to Casa da Cultura, a 19th-century prison that was transformed into a shopping mall in the 1970s. Most of the merchandise is handicrafts, traditional in nature and wonderfully diverse. The offerings include wooden sculptures, leather goods, lace and ceramics. If you can’t imagine the mall once being a prison, seek out the rather grim cell that has been left intact, perhaps as a message to thwart shoplifting. After approximately forty minutes of free time, you will rejoin your coach and return to the pier.

Live like a local by browsing one of Europe’s oldest markets and enjoying traditional treats and beverages. Your culinary immersion will begin at the Central Market, one of the oldest markets in Europe. With more than 200 shops and stalls, the late 19th-century Art Nouveau-style market attracts those seeking extraordinarily fresh produce, cheeses and meats. Virtually every iconic Italian food, condiment and beverage is on display. While meandering from stall to stall, you can expect the aroma of freshly ground coffee, baked goods and exotic spices to be wafting through the air. Samples may be offered to whet your appetite for the chickpea pancake tasting that follows. This popular street food is a thin flatbread that is typically crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and spectacularly flavorful. As a complement, you will visit the New Venice district for a cup of Ponce Livornese, a restorative rum-and-coffee concoction that locals often order as digestives following dinner.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
    • Browse the hundreds of shops and stalls in Livorno’s bustling Central Market.
    • Enjoy samples that vendors offer and a remarkably flavorful chickpea pancake afterwards.
    • Savor a classic spiked coffee drink that locals usually order as a digestive following meals.

Admire Hamburg from two unique perspectives: while cruising along the shores of its main urban lake, and while driving past its most historical highlights.

After departing from the pier, you will soon notice the abundance of waterways throughout the city. The Elbe River connects Hamburg to the North Sea, and the city boasts an extensive network of Venice-like canals. The prevalence of water keeps Hamburg’s 1,400 parks and gardens flourishing, as you will see at leafy Planten un Blomen park downtown.

Then, it’s on to Alster Lake, where you will enjoy a leisurely cruise across its serene waters, presenting you with a different perspective of the city. The lake was formed in the 12th century after the Alster River was dammed. Today, small pleasure vessels often sail the waters and joggers follow the paths along the shore.

Following your cruise, you will resume driving through Hamburg, passing the most iconic landmarks, which miraculously survived a devastating fire in 1842 and World War II bombings. One highlight is certainly St. Michael’s Church, whose soaring clock tower has loomed over the city since the 1680s. However, locals consider the 647-room town hall, a neo-Renaissance masterpiece, to be the symbolic heart of Hamburg. As a contrast to its opulence, you will also visit a modest 17th-century almshouse for the widows of shopkeepers.

Before returning to the pier, you will have some brief free time in the city center to perhaps pick up a souvenir or two.

Admire the beauty of Trieste during a panoramic driving tour that will bring you to the gorgeous gardens of Miramare Castle. You can’t help but notice the architectural impact of the past Venetian and Austrian rule as you pass highlights such as the Canal Grande, the Roman Theatre and the Piazza Unita d’Italia, which is said to be the largest seaside square in Europe. The piazza lies directly below the hilltop Cathedral of San Giusto, a landmark since the 14th century. A bit farther up the coast, you will stop at Miramare Castle, which was constructed on a rocky promontory in 1860 as a retirement residence for Austrian Archduke Maximilian. Although the site was originally devoid of vegetation, Maximilian ordered the grounds to be transformed into a botanical wonderland. As you will see, the gardens are still inspirational. You might reflect on their natural beauty while transferring to the Trieste Airport.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Settle in for a relaxing and immensely panoramic drive through Trieste.
    • Meander through the gardens and grounds of seaside Miramare Castle.
    • Make the most of your day before transferring to the airport in Trieste.

Discover two architecturally rich Italian seaports with distinct Venetian influences just minutes from the border of Slovenia. While walking through the Old Town of often-conquered Trieste, the guide will elaborate on the city’s history, which will seem particularly relevant as you explore the 14th-century Cathedral of San Giusto and the ruins of the medieval complex that surrounds it. You might also view the Canal Grande, a waterway lined with centuries-old palazzi much like the canals in Venice. No wonder – a Venetian designed the Trieste canal in the mid-1700s. Nearby, you will find the little town of Muggia. The Venetian Republic began controlling this fishing village in the 1400s and left an indelible mark, as did Austria. As you stroll the narrow streets of Old Town on your own, be sure to look for Muggia Castle, which is now the private residence of a Muggia-born sculptor. Afterwards, you will transfer to the airport in Venice.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Enjoy a walking tour through the Old Town of Trieste, parts of which look like Venice.
    • Spend free time in Muggia, whose architecture reflects its past Venetian and Austrian rule.
    • Make the most of your day before transferring to the Venice airport.

Spend free time enjoying the beautiful and spectacularly colorful islands of Burano before transferring to the Venice airport. While cruising the lagoon on the way to Burano, you will drop off your luggage at the airport, allowing you to more easily meander about the four islands that comprise Burano. The most striking feature of Burano is its patchwork of small brightly colored houses. The different hues were supposedly chosen so fishermen could spot their homes through the fog that often blankets the islands in the winter. Regardless of the origin of the colors, the setting is a delight to explore on your own. Burano is also known for its traditional lacework, which you will find in the many shops lining the canals. For a deeper appreciation of the history of lace-making, browse the Museum of Lace. If you wish to see a Rococo masterpiece by the 18th-century painter Tiepolo, drop by the San Martino church.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Take in the sights while cruising the Venetian lagoon to and from the islands of Burano.
    • Admire the bold, brightly colored homes throughout Burano.
    • Enjoy a leisurely walk along Burano’s picturesque canals, where you may shop if you wish.
    • Make the most of your day before transferring to the Venice airport.

Glide through the Venice of the North in a fitting manner, via glass-roofed canal boat. It’s an incomparable way to experience this cosmopolitan city that stretches over some 70 islands and boasts 60 miles of canals and 1,000 bridges. An obscure port mostly visited by fisherman back in the 13th century, Amsterdam steadily grew in trade importance – blossoming into one of the world’s most important ports as the Dutch Golden Age gained steam. On this relaxed waterway tour, you’ll traverse some of the four concentric canal rings that define the old city center while learning much of the history behind this watery network from your guide. Along the way, expect to pass countless variations on the signature gabled canal house design the city is so famous for. Just as colorful are the procession of houseboats and tiny skiffs tied up in organized randomness along the stone canal banks. The designated route brings you by such major monuments as the National Maritime Museum, magnificent Town Hall (once considered Europe’s largest administrative building).
