Discover the Unspoiled Schoodic Penninsula
hrs Estimate Duration
Ride the ferry to the fishing village of Winter Harbor and then travel the loop road around the Schoodic Peninsula, one of the most pristine sections of Acadia National Park.
After a short walk along the pier, you will board a ferry for Winter Harbor, which lies across Frenchman’s Bay. Along the way, you will pass the glacier-carved Porcupine Islands; spot lighthouses perched on the shore; and perhaps see fishermen hauling in their lobster traps.
Once in Winter Harbor, you will begin driving the picturesque loop road that hugs the outer edge of the secluded Schoodic Peninsula. It’s a six-mile route through the only section of Acadia National Park on the mainland, and the sights are stunning.
While winding through the spruce-fir forest, you can expect to see ancient granite outcroppings, the surf pounding the boulder-strewn coast and the distant mountains on Mount Desert Island. Truly breathtaking, this is Maine’s natural beauty in all its glory.
You will pause for photos at Frazier Point and Schoodic Point at the tip of the peninsula. The latter is one of best places to watch the surf crashing on the black and pink basalt rocks.
Returning to Winter Harbor, you will enjoy a different perspective of the area, especially at Grindstone Neck, which is dotted with Victorian-style summer homes. Free time in town follows, during which you may shop and dine on your own before retracing your route back to the pier in Bar Harbor.
