Upon departing the pier, you will pass a beautiful Train Station which is definitely an architectural highlight of Maputo. The station was built in 1910 by Gustav Eiffel, who is known for building the Eiffel Tower.

Your first stop will be to the local Maputo market for a glimpse of how the locals barter for a variety of goods and foods.

Afterwards it's on to Independence Square, a focal point for the city. Around it is a statue of the country's first president, Samora Machel, the gleaming white Roman Catholic cathedral, the neo-classical City Hall and the French-Mozambican cultural centre. The latter being a splendid old colonial building which has been tastefully restored and now presents art exhibitions. You will also have the opportunity to take photo’s of the weird and wonderful concept of a house made entirely out of iron.

Continue on to the Natural History Museum, which amongst other things, plays “host” to the only collection of elephant fetus in the world. Afterwards, you will enjoy lunch at a local hotel. The remainder of the afternoon is spent enjoying the magnificent facilities of this hotel. Remember to bring your towels and enjoy the magnificent view across the bay, whilst sipping cocktails around the pool.

Of special note - The coaches are maintained, although basic, and the quality can vary considerably. There is no formal guiding qualification required for Mozambique, and in order to support the local community we use local escorts/guides. Many of these escorts/guides do have previous experience in guiding for visiting cruise ships. Furthermore, although the majority of the roads are paved, you may encounter some with potholes or a few bumpy dirt roads.

Warning: Some of the monuments and attractions you will view may fall under "military or state defense objects". You are not allowed to take pictures and may run into serious problems ignoring these rules. Please therefore ask your tour guides advise first before taking any pictures.
