Known as the most romantic island in the world, Bora Bora is surrounded by an inspiring lagoon, resembling an artist’s palette of blues and greens. For most visitors to Bora Bora, it’s love at first sight!

Lush, tropical mountain slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus, and palm-covered islets circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate necklace. Perfect white-sand beaches give way to emerald waters, where colorful fish animate the coral gardens. The ambiance couldn’t be more romantic, especially within luxury resorts such as the Hotel InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort.

Located on the famous Matira Point along the island’s most beautiful beach, the InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort is a friendly hotel adorned with a crystal-clear lagoon.

Relax on the terrace of your overwater bungalow admiring the views of the surrounding lagoon and mountain peaks. Indulge in the services at the spa. Stroll the idyllic beach, pausing every so often in the shade of a swaying palm. Take an invigorating dip in the swimming pool. Or if you are feeling ambitious, enjoy water sports such as an outrigger canoe ride or snorkeling in the sea’s crystal-clear waters. Non-motorized water toys are included in the cost of the program. This is your time in paradise with no schedule to follow other than your own.

In the evening, as the resort becomes illuminated with soft lighting, the atmosphere becomes even more romantic and memorable. The ambiance is ideal for dinner which is included at the resort. Afterwards, feel free to stroll about the resort before retiring in your thatched-roof bungalow that’s perched over the water.

Travel along the incredibly photogenic Klondike Highway to the Canadian border, while pausing along the way to snap pictures of the gorgeous wilderness. The road pretty much follows the trail that prospectors carved out during the Gold Rush of 1898. The countryside is still largely undeveloped, except for a few bridges and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway that parallels the road. Named for the first Euro-American settlers in the area, the Captain William Moore Bridge offers a particularly panoramic view of Alaska’s interior. Other roadside stops will be made to view natural attractions such as ancient glaciers and Pitchfork Falls, a lovely cascade that splits into branches that resemble the tines of a pitchfork. After pausing again at the highway sign that marks the Canadian border at White Pass summit, you will travel back down the Klondike Highway toward Skagway. Commentary will enhance your understanding of the attractions and the area’s history.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Travel a picturesque highway that follows a trail created during the Gold Rush of 1898. • Snap pictures while pausing at scenic lookouts with views of glaciers and waterfalls. • Stop at the summit of White Pass, which marks the U.S. and Canadian border. • Hear enlightening commentary that describes the area’s history and attractions.

    HELPFUL HINTS
    • Dress warmly in layered clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Experience the top sights of Huahine up-close as you tour the island by 4WD and take an outrigger to a pearl farm. This wide-ranging excursion brings you across the bridge that links Huahine’s two principal islands and up to a lookout for spectacular panoramic views over Maroe Bay and the islands’ gem-blue surrounding lagoon. You’ll stop in at a drying house filled with the heavenly scent of vanilla, the seed pods of a tropical orchid vine. In Faie, you’ll feed bizarre blue-eyed eels that live in the village stream, while a visit to Maeva plunges you into an Indiana Jones-grade archeological site. The ruins of dozens of ancient open-air stone “marae” temples here are sacred artifacts marking where island royalty once lived. Not far away, you’ll encounter ingenious 400-year-old stone fish traps still in active use. Circling Huahine Nui to view its colorful bays and lagoons, you’ll pass Lake Fauna Nui and visit Fare, the largest town. And, hopping into an outrigger, you’ll cross to Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery to learn the secrets of the black pearl and browse their farm shop for peals and famous blue pottery made from a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon.

Wave goodbye to the palms for a while as you explore the fascinating landscape Huahine has waiting for you under the water’s surface. Departing the pier by covered boat, you’ll head for Motu Vaiorea, a tiny reef-ringed islet tucked between Huahine’s two principal islands at the mouth of Bourayne Bay. En route, you can expect super views of both Huahine Nui and its smaller sister island, Huahine Iti. Once anchored just offshore of Motu Vaiorea, you’ll receive your safety briefing, get your supplied snorkeling gear on and adjusted, then hop into the lagoon for about an hour of delightful undersea sightseeing as you swim and explore. The crystalline water sparkles, and the marine inhabitants below, going about their day-to-day life in paradise, can reflect just about every color known in the tropical universe.

Indulge in generous samplings of Hawaii’s most iconic products on a culinary adventure that will begin at the Mountain Thunder coffee plantation. After one sip of full-bodied coffee from beans grown and roasted there, you will understand why Kona coffee is so desirable. Browsing the wide array of merchandise offered at Waimea Midweek Farmers Market will provide an even deeper appreciation of Hawaii’s fertile volcanic soil. Every imaginable local product from purple sweet potatoes to chocolate butters to cold-pressed juices is available, and many of them will be offered to sample. Similarly, at the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company, you will have the opportunity to taste Hawaii’s signature macadamia nuts on their own or folded into biscotti and cookies. Although Hawaii isn’t as well known for its rum, it probably should be, as you will discover by sampling a refreshing cocktail at the Kuleana Rum Works. The rum is made on the island from 40 varieties of heirloom sugarcane.

Savor authentic Hawaiian dishes and beverages at several establishments in the historical district of Wailuku, which nestles at the foot of the West Maui Mountains.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of historical Wailuku, where you will stop in a variety of unpretentious restaurants and locales to sample pure Hawaiian specialties. Some of the dishes will reflect the town’s Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities.

While the exact offerings will vary, you can expect to taste breakfast staples such as banana pancakes and hot malasadas, a fried-dough treat that Portuguese sugarcane workers introduced to Hawaii in the late 19th century.

Loco moco is another classic, and the Tasty Crust has been serving it for more than 40 years in Wailuku. The dish is a savory combination of rice, hamburger patty and brown gravy, topped with a fried egg or two.

In all likelihood, you will also sample delectable sashimi, a variety of poke bowls and seasoned saimin noodles. Another favorite is Spam musubi, a handheld with a slice of Spam wedged between two blocks of rice and wrapped in nori, a Japanese seaweed.

You will also sample several beers at the Maui Brewing Company, Hawaii’s largest craft brewery. Selections range from a citrus-flavored India Pale Ale known as Big Swell to Coconut Hiwa Porter, a robust dark ale with hints of mocha.

Discover how Hawaii’s best-selling vodka is made, enjoy a serene stroll through a botanical garden and see how locally grown lavender is infused into all sorts of products.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely, scenic drive to the Ocean Vodka Organic Farm Distillery. While touring the family-owned estate, you will discover the sustainable farming practices that produce Hawaii’s best-selling vodka.

The distillery is entirely solar-powered and the ingredients such as sugar cane are organically grown in volcanic soil without herbicides or pesticides. The vodka is the only one in the world made with deep ocean mineral water, which imparts a unique flavor to it. A tasting of gluten-free Ocean Vodka follows the tour, after which you will receive a shot glass souvenir.

You will next visit Kula Botanical Garden, which blankets the slopes of the massive shield volcano Haleakala. As you meander the garden paths, you may pass koi ponds, walk through a covered bridge and enjoy the soothing sounds of waterfalls. Hawaiian geese known as nenes freely roam the property. Few places are quite so peaceful and naturally beautiful.

Continuing on, you will stop at Ali’i Kula, a farm that grows lavender for a variety of products. While exploring the farm on your own, you can take in the sweeping views of Maui’s central valley and see how the lavender is grown and used in products such as soaps, essential oils, jelly and candles.

Boat out to a small islet, spend awhile doing whatever pleases you – or nothing – and enjoy a Polynesian beach picnic. There are few locales on earth more scenic than being on a tiny motu in the Society Islands, surrounded by glistening sand, translucent turquoise waters and swaying palm trees. You’ll sail from the pier and anchor just offshore. Wade in through the shallow water and spend a couple of hours luxuriating in the manner of your choice: sunning, swimming, or maybe just drifting in and out of daydreams. Feeling more adventurous? Take a walk over to the reef side of the motu, past fields where the local fruits and vegetables are grown, and have a snorkel using the gear provided. Looking to add to your tropical wardrobe repertoire? Enjoy a traditional pareo demonstration and learn how to tie the perfect Polynesian sarong. Of course, no trip to micro-paradise is complete without a beach picnic – and this too will be on your agenda this day. After a time, climb back aboard for the return to Huahine pier. That’s paradise, too – just on a slightly larger scale.

This guided drive and walkabout provides an in-depth look at Huahine’s history, traditions and archaeological sites. Boarding an open-air “Le Truck” windowless bus at the pier, you’ll head for Maeva, one of the richest archaeological sites in all of Polynesia. At one time, this village was home to the island’s chiefs and their families, and the many ancient stone marae – open-air religious and social buildings – found here testify to the importance of this area to tribal life over the centuries. Up from coastal Maeva is Mata’irea Hill, where an even denser concentration of stone structures once stood, including marae, agricultural terraces, houses, fortified walls and burial platforms. Your guide will lead you on a first-hand walk through these sites, providing background on traditional Polynesian societal structure, important plants and animals, how religion and warfare worked, and the impact of European arrival. Back on board Le Truck, you’ll explore the island of Huahine Nui further, visiting 400-year-old stone fish traps still in active use at Lake Fauna Nui and the famous giant blue-eyed eels of Faie village. A steep drive up to Belvedere Lookout caps things off with sensational views of the island and Maroe Bay.

The luau is an essential part of the Hawaiian experience, and the cultural extravaganza at the historic Kilohana Plantation is a feast for all the senses. You’ll gather around the traditional fire pit and watch the roast pig emerge, a special treat to accompany the already lavish buffet of local delicacies and desserts. While torches blaze, graceful hulas and energetic fire dances will entertain you, and the ancient sea voyages that brought the original Hawaiians to these islands from Polynesia will be brought to life in story and song.
