Visit Raiatea's sister island Taha'a on this tour that highlights the beauty and culture of French Polynesia and includes stops at a pearl farm, vanilla plantation and a snorkel site.

From the pier in Raiatea, you will board a boat and begin your excursion with a scenic cruise across the tranquil lagoon towards Taha’a. An ancient legend says that Raiatea and Taha’a were originally one island until a giant eel swallowed a young girl. Possessed by her spirit, the enraged creature broke through the surface of the earth, causing the sea to surge. The impact of the water causing the island to be cut in two, creating the separate islands of Raiatea and Taha'a.

Upon arrival in Taha'a, you'll transfer to 4WD vehicles and navigate your way into the island's valleys and mountains. Along the way, your guide will point out the various sights you are passing. At a beautiful viewpoint, you'll stop for photos and discover the traditional use of local plants and trees. You will also have the opportunity to sample local fruits and learn the Tamure, a typical Tahitian dance.

The island of Taha’a is often called the Vanilla Island and a visit to a small, local vanilla plantation allows you to learn all about this fragrant spice that has a multitude of uses. You’ll also stop at a small black pearl farm and discover how these treasures of the sea are raised and harvested. These small cottage industries are part of the island’s economic structure and will give you a broader perspective of life here in French Polynesia.

Rejoining your boat, you will cruise across the turquoise waters to a motu (islet) where you can enjoy some time for snorkeling or swimming before returning to the pier in Raiatea.

Sail through Bora Bora’s gorgeous lagoon in an intimate deck boat, taking in the island’s astounding natural beauty and then snorkeling through the crystal-clear waters. This is a perfect way to discover the beauty of the Pearl of the Pacific, joining the pleasure of boating in a small group.

Your guide will welcome you onboard this intimate, partially covered deck boat, and you’ll cruise into Bora Bora’s reef-ringed lagoon. The beaches are sugar-white, the water absolutely brilliant, and the lush backdrop of Bora Bora, a veritable Shangri-La. Few places on earth rival this setting. Cruise past Motu Tapu, and see from the distance, one of the most photographed islands in the entire South Pacific. You will notice that Bora Bora is actually a caldera, and the two peaks at the center of the island—Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu—are the remnants of an extinct volcano. The peaks look particularly dramatic from the sea.

A stop in clear water will allow you to enjoy a fresh dip and even some snorkeling. Look for stingrays, as these gracious creatures are often seen in the area; you may enjoy a beautiful encounter with them! As you glide through the typically calm waters of the Coral Garden, you will see schools of brightly colored tropical fish.

Cruise into the turquoise waters off Matira Beach, where huge manta rays are often spotted gracefully swimming by. You’ll make a brief stop on a sand bank to enjoy some refreshments.

Ride an electric bike inland to Connell Lake while admiring the natural beauty of the surrounding Tongass National Forest. As you will discover during the initial briefing, the electric-enhanced bicycle will boost your pedal power, allowing you to ride farther and negotiate hills with considerably less effort than with a conventional bicycle. It’s only about three miles to the Connell Lake, all of it staggeringly beautiful. Sitka black-tailed deer are commonly seen along this route. The flora is also exceptional, especially the carnivorous sundew plants that consume insects that they trap on their sticky pads. Upon reaching the lake, you will learn how it was created in 1952 by damming several creeks to provide hydroelectric power to the Ketchikan pulp mill. The dam no longer supplies power as the pulp mill closed more than 25 years ago. Before pedaling back, you can relax around a campfire under a canopy of coniferous trees or walk a short nature trail.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Pedal an electric-enhanced bicycle to and from Connell Lake, a roundtrip of about six miles.
    • Gain a historical perspective of the manmade lake, which once powered the Ketchikan pulp mill.
    • Learn about the indigenous flora and fauna from the naturalist guide.

    OVERVIEW
Enjoy an insider’s view of local chocolate and tequila production as a prelude to exploring the wonders underwater in a semi-submersible. At the Mayan Cacao Company, you will see how chocolate is made from cacao, a process that dates back to the ancient Mayas, who drank chocolate for ceremonial and medicinal purposes as far back as 500 BC. After sampling some creamy chocolate, you will proceed to a tequila tasting seminar for a tasting that will present the historical and cultural importance of tequila on the Yucatan peninsula. An entirely different perspective of Cozumel awaits you just offshore on Paradise Reef, where you will explore the underwater world in a semi-submersible. Although the vessel’s viewing windows are only a few feet below the water’s surface, the sights will be extraordinary. You can expect to see a riot of brilliantly colored fish and perhaps hawksbill turtles and green moray eels.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Watch a demonstration of how chocolate is made from cacao and sample several pieces.
    • Tour a distillery that produces tequila and taste this characteristic Yucatan spirit.
    • Behold the brightly colored marine life just offshore in a semi-submersible vessel.

Take off on a 4-wheel-drive vehicle specifically designed for traversing rugged terrain. The landscape surrounding Wellington is wonderfully wild, so you can expect an incredible scenic ride. At Tongue Point, you’ll drive onto the beach to observe a thriving colony of fur seals in their natural habitat.

Once pushed to the brink of extinction, fur seals have made a steady comeback since being protected by law in 1978. While their thick layers of fat and fur allow them to endure long periods of time in the water, fur seals can overheat while on land, so they often head back to the sea. A typical dive may last between one to two minutes, although fur seals can remain underwater for as long as eleven minutes. Being carnivorous, they feed on fish, squid and octopus. You’ll spend some time watching the quite social animals at play by the beach and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a muffin.

Hoist the sails and set a course south on a comfortable, exclusive catamaran. This upscale sail and snorkel tour starts with a scenic one-hour motor-sail out to Buck Island, a fish and birdlife private island sanctuary. more...

Snorkel two reefs that are teeming with marine life and see the wreck of a freighter that has become an artificial reef. A sleek catamaran will bring you to the snorkeling sites, which are both located just off Buck Island, a naturally beautiful oasis that is a national wildlife refuge. Turtle Cove is known for its abundant sea turtles, the most common being green and hawksbill turtles. It’s easy to differentiate between the species, as green sea turtles weigh as much as 500 pounds and are typically twice the size of hawksbills. Countless tropical fish inhabit Turtle Cove and Shipwreck Cove, the second snorkeling venue, which is named for the ship that was scuttled there in 1979. A few years later, Hurricane Hugo broke the ship into three pieces and pushed it into shallower water. While snorkeling in the coves, you can expect to see snapper, blue tangs and parrotfish of every imaginable neon color.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Double your chances of seeing marine life by snorkeling two reefs off Buck Island.
    • Look for sea turtles and brightly colored tropical fish, which are abundant in both locales.
    • See a shipwreck that lies just 25 feet below the surface of the water.
    • Enjoy an open bar and Caribbean music on the return cruise.
