Pass through the visually stunning countryside in the Puna district just outside Hilo, where you will see lava fields from past volcanic eruptions and walk along the Pohoiki black-sand beach, which is composed of lava fragments. According to legend, the volatile Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele lives in the district’s Kīlauea volcano. She not only creates new land, but also destroys what stands in the path of the lava, which is known as “frozen fire” once it cools and hardens. However, the historical Painted Church was spared during Kīlauea’s eruption in 1990 when the congregants raised the church onto a trailer and moved it to safety. While browsing the wooden church, which features wonderful painted ceiling frescoes, you will hear more about its salvation. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to shop for locally made merchandise and meander along Hilo Bay, whose jagged black rock shoreline is volcanic in origin.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Behold the devastation of past volcanic eruptions and the natural beauty left in their wakes.
    • See the Painted Church that congregants moved to save it from a nearby lava flow.
    • Walk on a gorgeous black-sand beach that a volcanic eruption created.
    • Shop for locally made merchandise in and around Hilo.

Your adventure starts by viewing historical points of interest while off shore from the village of Kailua-Kona. While zipping down the coast on these fast and fun Zodiac Hurricanes, you may be able to stop to interact with marine life. There are 17 species of dolphins in Hawaii that may be seen on any given day. You may encounter the Hawaiian Spinner, Pacific Bottlenose or Spotted dolphins. As well as the seasonal Humpback whales that migrate yearly from Alaska (Jan-Apr), you may also find pilot whales, false killer whales and other rare, elusive whales that live here year-round. When you are in the Zodiac, you are just 2 feet above the water line, so you have a great vantage point from which to view the marine life.

Your ultimate destination is Kealakekua Bay marine preserve, site of the Captain Cook monument. Kealakekua Bay is known around the world for its abundance of coral and tropical fish - over 220 varieties of marine life in total. You will spend 1 ½ hours snorkeling the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the bay. All the snorkel gear is provided, including masks (RX if needed), snorkels, fins, and flotation devices. Non-swimmers and first-time snorkelers will be provided with flotation devices and instruction. There is a 3-4 rung ladder that is lowered from the Zodiac and you must be able to get up the ladder and back into the raft on your own. There is no access to land on this tour, the Zodiac is your "island" where you can get in and out of the water as often as you like at the snorkel spot.

While enjoying your tropical snacks and refreshments, you’ll hear all about the history of the bay and the story of Captain Cook. You will get up close to explore the rugged coastline and see natural blowholes, exposed giant lava tubes and your Zodiac will poke its' nose into sea caves. See beautiful colors and striations of the lava up close. Your captain is a naturalist, geologist, historian and some like to think that they are comedians. It is guaranteed that you'll be laughing from the minute you step off the dock into the Zodiac.

Check out Maui’s massive Haleakala volcano from bottom to top, as you journey from sea level to the summit to view spectacular island scenery and the immense crater of volcanic rock. You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui’s massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey – from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won’t one day wake up. The Hawaiians revere it as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos.

The views from the top are magnificent. If the day is clear, you may even make out two other towering peaks – Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island. From the crater’s rim, you'll be able to appreciate first hand the unique beauty of this imposing caldera with its interesting mix of volcanic rock and plant life, some of which, like the silversword plant, is found only in Hawaii's volcanic craters.

Gain an understanding of the Big Island’s history through attractions that highlight the life of the early Hawaiians and the influence of Catholic missionaries. Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will offer a glimpse into the early culture, as it was a place of refuge for those that had violated the sacred laws known as kapu. There, you will see a temple where criminals could be absolved of their transgressions and safely return to society. To complement the experience, you will visit the 19th-century Painted Church. Its interior features frescoes and murals of biblical scenes that a Belgian priest painted to teach the islanders Catholicism. The missionaries were also instrumental in dismantling the harsh kapu laws. You will also learn how coffee was introduced to Hawaii in the 1820s and how it is processed today at the Royal Kona Coffee Center. It is an excellent setting to enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed Kona coffee.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit one Hawaii’s most sacred sites, where criminals could find safe refuge.
    • View the biblical murals and frescoes that adorn the Painted Church.
    • Enjoy a cup of Kona coffee and learn about its production at a coffee mill.

Come aboard as we depart from Ma'alaea Harbor aboard one of our extremely stable, 65 ft., double deck, powered catamarans and head out to our first snorkel site, world-famous Molokini Crater. Maui's iconic crescent-shaped islet is a beautiful reef known for its crystal-clear waters, abundant coral, colorful fish and resting seabirds. A protected marine conservation area, this volcanic crater is only accessible by boat with a certified tour operator. You'll snorkel about an hour at Molokini and then head to your second snorkel site, Turtle Arches, with its underwater lava formations and frequent green sea turtle sightings. Your tour will be led by our certified Marine Naturalists who have a love for our oceans and will educate you about what you'll be witnessing throughout your trip. Your adventure includes a continental breakfast, BBQ lunch, refreshments, 1 complimentary alcoholic drink (beer, wine, tropical well drinks), snorkeling gear, free reef tour by one of our Marine Naturalists, learn-to-snorkel instruction, fish ID class, Junior Naturalist program for kids, and a free wildlife poster from our Ocean Store once you return to the harbor. Moreover, all profits from this and all Eco-tours are used to fund Pacific Whale Foundations' ongoing research, conservation and education programs aimed at protecting our oceans through science and advocacy. If sea conditions make either Molokini or Turtle Arches unsafe, our captains will utilize their experience to select the best possible alternative sites. Sometimes that may mean snorkeling the entire time at Molokini or substituting the Turtle Arches site for another spot know for green sea turtle populations.

    OVERVIEW

Zip along the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii on a 41-foot Super-Raft and enjoy an extended stop to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. The powerful, twin-engine vessel is open-air with plenty of shaded bench seating so you should be comfortable as you race along the gorgeous Kona coast. After assessing the wind and water conditions, the captain will select the most suitable spot for your snorkeling adventure. The Big Island boasts the highest percentage of live coral in the Hawaiian Islands and where there’s coral, there’s fish. You can expect to see an ever-changing parade of marine life that may include fluorescent-colored tangs, oddly shaped trumpet fish, graceful manta rays and green sea turtles, known locally as honu. Triggerfish are also found here and are considered the unofficial Hawaiian state fish. They’re rather unusual looking as indicated by their 21-letter Hawaiian name, which means “fish with a snout like a pig.”

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Cruise off the naturally beautiful Kona coast of Hawaii in a powerful 41-foot Super-Raft.
    • Snorkel a coral reef or another spot that should be teeming with colorful marine life.
    • Keep an eye out for showstoppers like green sea turtles and Hawaiian spinner dolphin.

Savor authentic Hawaiian dishes and beverages at several establishments in the historical district of Wailuku, which nestles at the foot of the West Maui Mountains.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of historical Wailuku, where you will stop in a variety of unpretentious restaurants and locales to sample pure Hawaiian specialties. Some of the dishes will reflect the town’s Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities.

While the exact offerings will vary, you can expect to taste breakfast staples such as banana pancakes and hot malasadas, a fried-dough treat that Portuguese sugarcane workers introduced to Hawaii in the late 19th century.

Loco moco is another classic, and the Tasty Crust has been serving it for more than 40 years in Wailuku. The dish is a savory combination of rice, hamburger patty and brown gravy, topped with a fried egg or two.

In all likelihood, you will also sample delectable sashimi, a variety of poke bowls and seasoned saimin noodles. Another favorite is Spam musubi, a handheld with a slice of Spam wedged between two blocks of rice and wrapped in nori, a Japanese seaweed.

You will also sample several beers at the Maui Brewing Company, Hawaii’s largest craft brewery. Selections range from a citrus-flavored India Pale Ale known as Big Swell to Coconut Hiwa Porter, a robust dark ale with hints of mocha.

Stop at Pana’ewa Zoo the only naturally occurring rainforest zoo in the United States. Next, visit Mauna Loa Mac Nut Factory as well as the Big Island Candies Store. Established in 1977, each of its delectable candies and cookies are hand-crafted in this factory store. View the production process and see what goes into making these world-famous Hawaiian treats. All products are made from only freshly roasted Big Island macadamia nuts and pure Kona and Ka‘u coffee from farms on the Big Island. Since its founding, Big Island Candies has continuously introduced new and imaginative products that "wow" both the eyes and taste buds of its growing legion of fans.

Cruise to the island of Tahaa to visit a vanilla farm and then visit a small islet nearby to comb the beaches, snorkel and enjoy a typical Polynesian picnic lunch.

After departing from the pier in a boat, you will soon enter the protected turquoise lagoon that encircles Raiatea, an island whose name translates to faraway heaven. Upon arriving at the nearby island of Tahaa, it’s a short walk to reach the vanilla plantation. Seventy percent of the vanilla grown in French Polynesia is from Tahaa and it makes for a wonderfully fragrant setting. While strolling about, you can expect to see and smell aromatic vanilla pods curing in the sun. You may also walk among the rows of climbing orchids that produce the pods and learn how they are hand-pollinated. You will also have time to shop for vanilla-infused products.

Re-boarding your boat, it’s a short cruise to one of the lagoon’s gorgeous reef islets, known as motus. Few places are so relaxing, serene and ideal for beachcombing. An island style lunch will be served during your time on the motu, and the remainder of your stay will be free to do as you please. You might sunbathe or relax in the shade, doing nothing more ambitious than watching the waves gently lap at the shore. Or you may enjoy a refreshing swim and a bit of snorkeling (mask and snorkel provided).

The exquisite beauty and undersea dwellers of Bora Bora's lagoon are for you to discover during this shark and stingray snorkeling safari aboard a covered lagoon cruiser.

Your boat heads toward the ancient crater rim of Motu Tapu, dropping anchor on a shallow sandbank. You'll have the opportunity to discover first-hand the elegant, yet harmless stingrays. Watch in amazement as your guide hand feeds the stingrays while they glide effortlessly around you. If you are willing, your guide will even help you get close enough to touch them. There is also a good chance you’ll see some harmless black tip sharks in the lagoon as well, so keep an eye out for them.

You will also stop to explore the pristine coral gardens by the barrier reef. After a safety briefing and snorkeling instructions, you’ll enter the water and enjoy the colorful marine life that abounds.

Cruise through a crystal-clear lagoon just offshore, stopping to snorkel and swim before continuing into the open sea where the views are even more spectacular.

After departing from the pier in a sleek catamaran, you will settle in for a relaxing and immensely scenic cruise through a nearby lagoon. The 65-foot Ohana is the largest and fastest catamaran in its class and offers plenty of shaded seating under its canopy. For those who prefer to bask in the sun, there is comfortable mesh netting on the bow. With its shallow draft, the catamaran is ideal for cruising the lagoon and into areas other boats simply can’t reach. The waters here are translucent, but for an even closer look at the wonders below, you will navigate until you reach your swim stop. Masks and snorkels will be provided for your exploration; the sandy area boasts tiki carved stones which are worth a visit. Access to the water is via a large, easy step ladder and will make getting in and out of the water an easy task for all.

The sights are just as magnificent above the surface, as heart-shaped mountainous Moorea is lined with pristine beaches backed by forests of lush palms. In many ways, the landscape hasn’t changed dramatically since Captain James Cook and Captain Samuel Wallis explored here in the 18th century.

In time, you will sail out of the lagoon and into the open sea. As you sail back to the pier, enjoy some refreshments and be sure to keep an eye out for frolicking spinner dolphins.

This eco-exploration includes a guided nature hike, a Native Totem Park and a historic sawmill at an exclusive reserve located in the forested mountains at rustic Herring Cove. A pristine natural environment, it is home to bald eagles, black bear, seals and a variety of birds and other species attracted by the major salmon runs in the abundant marine estuary. A naturalist will guide you along an improved trail through the heart of the dense forest, among tall stands of hemlock, spruce and cedar, stopping at strategically located viewing areas. At a protected, open estuary, you'll follow Herring Creek along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands. Major runs of salmon return to spawn here. Listen to the symphony of bird activity in this spectacular setting. Seasonal ecosystem changes result in varying levels of wildlife activity. A mile trail walk brings you to the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill. Stop at Tsimshian totem park, see a master carver working, check out our historic sawmill and watch our local blacksmiths at work. Check out the amazing collection of totems in the courtyard. Delve into traditional Tahitian culture by cruising to nearby Tahaa to discover how vanilla is grown and black pearls are produced before an island lunch and relaxing on the island’s gorgeous beach.

After departing from the pier in a motorized catamaran, you will enjoy a wonderfully scenic cruise across a turquoise-blue lagoon to the island of Tahaa, which lies due north. Your first destination ashore is a vanilla farm. You will probably be greeted by the scent of the spice before arriving as 70% of the vanilla grown in French Polynesia is from Tahaa.

Expect to see and smell fragrant vanilla pods curing in the sun. You may also stroll among the rows of climbing orchids that produce the pods and learn how they are pollinated. There will be some time for shopping before continuing on with a short drive to Motu Pearl Village. Established in 1991, the village cultivates black pearls in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the surrounding lagoon. After hearing the fascinating story of how the pearls are produced, you may shop for jewelry and other items adorned with these prized treasures. Like vanilla, black pearls are synonymous with Tahaa, and both are mainstays of the economy.

After the visit, enjoy a cocktail or a fresh local beer before a traditional Polynesian buffet lunch is served while a live Polynesian group entertains you. It makes for an excellent introduction to the pareo show that follows. A pareo is a wraparound skirt that is essential to Tahitian dance. Finally, you will head for the beach of Motu Mahea to relax, sunbathe or get in the water before returning to the pier.

Explore Honolulu’s highlights – from Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific to Hawaii’s first Christian church, and Iolani Palace and Washington Place, both former residences of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Pearl Harbor is one of Hawaii’s best-known landmarks and the scene of the devastating aerial attack by Japan that drove the U.S. into WWII. The Pearl Harbor Visitor's center exhibit galleries bring visitors closer to the sights and sounds of the events leading up to the attack on Oahu and its aftermath. These galleries display personal memorabilia, dramatic photographs, artifacts of the battle, and other exhibits.

In central Honolulu stand face to face with the larger-than-life statue of King Kamehameha I, the leader who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom. Just across the street you’ll see the Iolani Palace, residence of Hawaii's last two monarchs. European in design, it boasted Hawaii’s first electric lights, flush toilets and internal phone system. Also nearby is Kawaiahao Church, Hawaii's first Christian house of worship, built of coral slabs from the offshore reefs.

At the heart of the downtown historic district you will notice the elegant Washington Place, now a museum, and once home to Liliuokalani, Hawaii’s last queen. Drive through the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, in the extinct volcanic crater known as the Punchbowl. It is the final resting place of some 53,000 veterans who lost their lives in 20th century wars, including those who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Enjoy panoramic city views on your drive to the airport.

It too is a spectacular reminder that the Hawaiian Islands are volcanically formed. While paddling through the bay and around Coconut Island, be sure to look for green sea turtles, symbols of good luck and longevity. You will also kayak up the Wailuku River to view its gorgeous waterfall.

See the island’s most spectacular natural wonders, starting with a hike to Kilauea Crater in Volcanoes National Park.

The setting is so extraordinary that UNESCO deemed the park a World Biosphere site and a World Heritage site. To reach the crater, you will hike three miles roundtrip. The sights along the way will make it well worth the effort, as the volcano has been steadily erupting since 1983 and the surrounding countryside is dramatic. Afterward, you will pause for photos at magnificent Rainbow Falls, which is named for the rainbows that often form in the surrounding mist. Another photo opportunity awaits you at Liliuokalani Gardens, which pays tribute to the Japanese immigrants that worked in the sugarcane fields more than a century ago. Enjoy a local shopping stop where you can sample Hawaiian macadamia nuts before returning to the ship.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Hike through the dramatic countryside to a volcanic crater that continues to erupt.
    • Enjoy photo opportunities at Rainbow Falls and Liliuokalani Gardens.

    OVERVIEW

Being on Maui’s western shore, the crescent-shaped beach couldn’t be in a better spot to watch the sun slowly dip below the horizon. This tour is available for prebooking’s only. Soar high above the gorgeous northern shore of Maui in a helicopter and land in a rainforest for a closer look at the tropical landscape. You will fly over thundering waterfalls, the famed windsurfing setting at Ho’okipa Beach, and the mega-surf break at Pe’ahi, a spot with such monstrous swells that it is nicknamed “Jaws.” Many of the locations are so remote that they can only be observed from the air, as there are no roads, only dense jungle and precipitous cliffs. One such site is Keopuka Rock, a steep sliver of an island known as Jurassic Rock because it was featured in the opening sequence of the movie “Jurassic Park.” In time, you will land in a rainforest clearing and toast the experience with a glass of champagne. The landscape there is blanketed with banana trees, papayas, pineapples and lilkoi, a colorful passion flower that grows on a vine.

    • View famed surfing and windsurfing beaches, roaring waterfalls and remote sea cliffs.

Spectacular volcanoes, craters and steam vents are waiting to be explored at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that has recently reopened after a period of tumultuous volcanic activity. The landscape of Volcanoes Park has dramatically changed as the floor of the Kilauea crater sunk over 1,500 feet and the overall caldera quadrupled in size and widened by over a square mile. Today, the explosive eruptions, earthquakes and ash clouds have been replaced by remarkable changes in the summit area. The highlights of this exciting tour include visits at each of the following destinations in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park while riding to each stop in comfort on a deluxe motor coach. Walk through the Kilauea Visitors Center to receive information on the Park’s current conditions, view educational exhibits and interact with park rangers. Enjoy unforgettable views of Kilauea from Volcano House, just a short walk across the street. Kilauea’s massive size and scale is realized from this vantage point. Then you’ll be engulfed in rising steam as ground water seeps down to the hot volcanic rocks at the Steam Vents. The area between the edge of Kilauea’s caldera and the outer cliffs are treeless because the extreme heat destroys their roots; only shallow-rooted grasses and other hearty plants survive here. On you return to the pier, visit the Big Island Candies Store. Established in 1977, each of its delectable candies and cookies are hand-crafted in this factory store. View the production process and see what goes into making these world famous Hawaiian treats. The Volcanoes National Park Tour is not to be missed and includes round-trip transportation from the pier by deluxe motorcoach.

    OVERVIEW

Delve into the world of volcanoes at a national park that contains active ones and see how volcanoes have shaped the Hawaiian landscape, sometimes in a positive manner. The terrain and natural diversity within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is so unique that UNESCO deemed it both a World Biosphere site and a World Heritage site. You will walk among steaming vents in the earth’s surface. Other highlights include seeing the active Halema’uma’u pit crater within the Kilauea summit caldera and driving along the winding road, which passes old lava flows and other reminders of past eruptions. The island’s volcanic soil is exceptionally fertile as you will discover by strolling through Lili’uokalani Gardens, a wonderland of native plants that was once the favorite picnic grounds of Queen Lili’uokala, Hawaii’s last monarch. Volcanic activity also created the black lava rock on many of the island’s beaches.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit stunning Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
    • View an active volcano, craters and steam vents releasing hot water vapor into the air.
    • Meander through a botanical garden that thrives in the island’s volcanically formed soil.
    • See a coastline made of black rock made of volcanic materials and lava fragments.
