Discover the natural beauty surrounding Hoonah on an exhilarating helicopter ride and by biking and hiking down a forested mountain to a secluded beach.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic drive through Hoonah, the largest Tlingit community in Alaska. A brief orientation at a nearby heli-pad follows, after which you will fly off in a helicopter with your bike attached, taking in the magnificent scenery of dense woodlands, majestic mountains and pristine waterways dotted with islands. Little has changed in the landscape since the Tlingit first settled the area centuries ago.

In time, the helicopter will touch down on the summit of a mountain, where you will change modes of transportation. You will descend by mountain bike, following a trail that will present an entirely different perspective of the unspoiled wilderness. From ground level, you will enjoy a more intimate, up-close look at the natural beauty of Chichagof Island.

On occasion, you will stop to hike to fascinating points of interest, as the guide describes the flora and fauna and regales you with stories of the island’s history. Much of it will involve the Tlingits, who permanently settled here in 1754 when advancing glaciers forced them south to what would become Hoonah. In the Tlingit language, Hoonah means “where the north wind doesn’t blow.”

Your adventurous bike ride will conclude at the beach, where you will enjoy a bit of free time to explore and sample traditional Tlingit foods including smoked salmon, beach asparagus, and other local samples depending on season and availability. Then, your helicopter will return to take you back to town. Don’t forget to look up and appreciate the route you just biked.
