Gain insight into one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific Theater and see how Okinawa has commemorated the soldiers and civilians that lost their lives during this last major battle of World War II. Your immersion into the Battle of Okinawa will begin at Peace Memorial Park, a somber site with dozens of memorial monuments constructed in an area where the battle eventually came to an end. Nearby, you will find the Himeyuri Monument, a memorial to the female high school students and teachers that died during the battle while attending to injured Japanese soldiers in a makeshift underground hospital. The Japanese Navy also had their command center underground, and it hasn’t changed much since the last days of the battle in June 1945. Descend the 100 or so steps to it, and you will see the staff rooms and narrow tunnels that the Japanese occupied in their desperate attempt to defend Okinawa.
