Explore two religious icons founded in the 8th century in Japan’s former capital of Nara: one a massive Buddhist temple, the other a Shinto shrine adorned with thousands of lanterns. Shortly after Todaiji temple was built, it became so influential that the country’s capital was moved to reduce its control over government affairs. Although earthquakes damaged much of the original temple, the bronze lantern outside the Great Buddha Hall is original. The Buddha inside is the largest in Japan and the hall is supposedly the world’s largest wooden building. Nearby, you will find the vermilion-colored Kasuga shrine. It nestles in a natural wooded setting, which reflects Shinto being rooted in nature. As you wander the serene grounds, you may visit a botanical garden full of symbolic wisteria or purchase a random fortune written on a slip of paper. If the fortune is unfavorable, it is customary to tie it to a tree twig to negate its power.
