OVERVIEW

Experience farm life – authentic farm life – in the rugged Otago high country, a destination best reached on an all-terrain off-road vehicle. An ancient shift in the tectonic plates created this vast elevated landscape, which is mostly covered with alfalfa and tussock, a native New Zealand grass. The high country is ideal for raising livestock as you will discover at Barewood Station, a large working farm that raises mostly sheep following sustainable practices. You will witness the farmers’ daily lives as they manage their herds across a vast expanse of undulating land that is subdivided into hundreds of separate paddocks. The challenges are many as the climate is harsh with low rainfall, cold winters, and hot summers. Overcoming those difficulties has made the longevity of Barewood Station more fulfilling for the farmers. While gazing out over the inspiring vistas, you can snack on a charcuterie board of locally sourced specialties.

Be awed by the natural beauty and bountiful wildlife while cruising through Otago Harbour and driving off road across an eco-sanctuary known as Natures Wonders. From the decks of the Albatross Express catamaran, you will enjoy an up-close view of the dramatic coastline as you pass the steep seaside cliffs at Aramoana Spit and Taiaroa Head, site of the oldest working lighthouse on the South Island. The birds there comprise the world’s only mainland breeding colony of Northern Royal Albatross. After disembarking at Wellers Rock, enjoy a short scenic drive to Natures Wonders, a privately owned sheep farm on the Otago Peninsula that provides a safe and undisturbed wildlife habitat. It is here you will board an 8-wheel all-terrain vehicle, embarking on an exhilarating off-road safari. Midway through your safari journey, swap to an off-road coaster bus for a more relaxed scenic drive across this breathtaking landscape. As you traverse across rolling hills and towering clifftops with stunning ocean views, the animals are particularly abundant along the coast and include fur seals and sea lions. You may also spot little blue penguins – no bigger than 13 inches high – waddling across the beach after feeding in the sea.

OVERVIEW

Travel out to the far tip of wild Otago Peninsula and encounter tiny penguins, plump fur seals, and nesting seabirds on an all-terrain tour of remote headland bluffs and beaches. Skirting Otago Harbor’s north shore past Sawyer’s Bay, Roseneath and St. Leonard’s, your coach will round the bend at Dunedin and continue out along the craggy peninsula coast to Natures Wonders, a family-run touring farm in the epicenter of what is arguably the most precious wildlife habitat in New Zealand. You’ll travel by mini-coach for part of the tour, and 8-wheel-drive Argo vehicle for the rest. The route will bring you from the farm’s high point 659 feet above sea level all the way down to the water’s edge and back up, passing breathtaking sights and viewpoints along the way. Sample the beers made at a landmark Dunedin brewery and delve into the region’s natural history at the Otago Museum. Speight’s Brewery, a Dunedin icon since it opened its doors in 1876, has done as little as possible to change with the times. Still in its original eight-story location above a natural spring that imparts trademark flavor to its wares, this gravity-fed brewery is one of just two in the world still using an open-style vat to create beers from the original recipes. Sampling several varieties, you’ll find some that deliver a distinctive 19th-century tang. A stop for lunch at a nearby alehouse often involves fresh cod fried in batter made with Speight’s beer. Then it’s on to history of another type as you browse the Stories of the South exhibit in the Otago Museum, showing how this region’s magnificently rugged landscape has shaped the lives of all who’ve settled here. The museum also boasts the world’s largest collection of extinct moa skeletons and the country’s largest fossil, a 23-foot-long aquatic plesiosaur. Your return trip to the pier includes a photo stop at the much-celebrated Dunedin Railway Station, built in checkered Edwardian Baroque style in 1906.

This tour visits two iconic Otago Peninsula sights, one a rookery and the other a castle.
