Accessible Mobility Equipment: Pisa & Medieval Lucca

    Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy

    Duration 8 hrs

    OVERVIEW

This excursion is for guests who are fully dependent on their mobility device. You will be required to supply your own wheelchair/scooter. Your mobility equipment (manual or electric) must not exceed the following dimensions: W 57", L 39", H 70".

Those guests that are fully dependent on their mobility device please book: LIV_A3 ACCESSIBLE Companion: Pisa & Medieval Lucca.

Tour includes step-free routes, shorter distances and no stairs. Accessible restrooms with wide doors for wheelchairs are present along the tour route. Vehicles are adapted with an access ramp (or lift where available) to accommodate a limited number of wheelchairs and/or mobility scooters. Guides are not allowed to push wheelchairs; therefore, guests needing special assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied.

Experience incredible medieval art and architecture in Pisa’s glorious Field of Miracles and then explore more medieval treasures in the town Lucca. Few attractions are quite so iconic as the quartet of medieval masterpieces in Pisa —the Leaning Tower, Duomo, Baptistery and Camposanto. The guide will elaborate on the historical importance of this UNESCO World Heritage site while you take in its architectural beauty. In the nearby National Museum of San Matteo, you will see works of art from various ecclesiastical buildings throughout the province. Next, you will continue to Lucca, which the Romans founded in 180 BC. While little from that time remains, historical architecture is still the town’s most outstanding feature, especially its remarkably intact Renaissance walls. While meandering about, you may notice an odd curve to some streets. The reason is that the buildings lining them follow the footprint of the massive walls that once supported a Roman amphitheater.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit the Field of Miracles, home to Pisa’s Leaning Tower, Duomo, Baptistery and Camposanto.
    • Browse paintings of Madonna and St. Paul in the National Museum of San Matteo.

    Jeep Tour at Marble Quarries

    Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy

    Duration 5 hrs

Drive into the Apuan Alps to behold the quarries where Carrara marble has been excavated for centuries and then enjoy a sampling of a local Tuscan delicacy.

After departing from the pier, you will drive toward the Apuan Alps, a mountain range where high-quality marble has been quarried for centuries. What appears to be snow from a distance is actually white marble and marble dust on the mountains’ bare quarried faces.

As you approach the quarries, you will switch vehicles and continue on in a Jeep that is ideally suited for the rugged terrain. During the drive through the quarries, your escort will elaborate on the excavation process and how it has changed over the centuries.

In Roman times, Carrara marble was extracted by hand and shipped throughout Italy to build palaces and monuments. During the Renaissance, Michelangelo came to these quarries to find marble for masterpieces such as the Pietà and David. The artist favored the whitest, most finely veined marble from the Serra gorge. Today, beefy bulldozers and diamond-edged cutting equipment are used to excavate the marble.

But marble isn’t the only product synonymous with this area, as you will discover at a lard sampling. While it may not sound appetizing, the local Colonnata lard, which is pork back fat, is considered a delicacy. The preparation involves cutting the lard into strips, adding proprietary seasonings, and then aging it in a marble container for at least six months. The resulting treat will melt in your mouth. Following some free time, you will travel back to the pier.

    Need to Know:

Note: The vehicles used to visit the quarries could be jeeps or 4x4 cars. There is a limited amount of walking on this tour, primarily at the guests’ discretion during free time. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns, back or neck problems or pregnant women. Participants must be at least 14 years of age to take part in the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended (no high heels or wedges). Operation of this tour is dependent upon prevailing weather conditions and may be cancelled or modified by the local authority’s decisions. There is no escort on the van from Livorno to the marble quarries. Vehicles have a max of 8 passengers including the English-speaking assistant during the jeep tour. Safety helmets and orange belts are provided to enter the worksites. During weekends, activities at the Quarries may be limited.

    Pisa Tower Climb

    Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy

    Duration 4 hrs

Drive through the lovely Tuscan countryside en route to the historic town of Pisa, located on the banks of the Arno River. Enjoy a short trolley ride that takes you directly to Miracle Square, next to the famous Leaning Tower. Continue down to the open air square for a brief explanation of the Cathedral and the Baptistery. You’ll have some free time to browse for souvenirs and gifts at the many stalls lining the walk to the Field of Miracles.

    Cinque Terre On Your Own

    Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy

    Duration 9 1/4 hrs

Spend free time exploring Vernazza and Riomaggiore, two spectacularly beautiful coastal villages in Cinque Terre, an area so scenic that UNESCO named it a World Heritage site.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an immensely picturesque drive to Vernazza, one of five coastal villages within Cinque Terre. All of them lie within the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Terre National Park, an area that UNESCO has deemed a World Heritage site for being a landscape of great scenic and cultural value.

Arguably the most photogenic of the villages, Vernazza is a wonderful setting to enjoy free time, meandering about wherever you please. The main square is a great place to start exploring, as the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia stands here overlooking the natural harbor. Built in the Gothic-Ligurian style, the church features an octagonal bell tower that can't be missed, making it even easier to find your way around the pastel-colored town.

After a few hours strolling the narrow lanes of Vernazza, you will drive on to Riomaggiore, another absolutely gorgeous coastal village that clings to a steep hillside. The largest of the five villages, Riomaggiore has also been built into a steep rocky hillside, affording magnificent views of the sea.

Because of its size, Riomaggiore offers a few more points of interest than Vernazza. A 13th century castle looms over the historical center, the Oratory of St. Mary Assumption holds an intriguing 15th-century triptych and the St. John the Baptist church is ornamented with black-and-white marble.

    Need to Know:

Note: The local escort will provide touristic info during the trip to the Cinque Terre. The villages can be visited in reverse order, but the whole program will go through. The land in the two villages is mostly made up of pebbles, gravel, uneven and sloping sections as well as numerous steps. Walking on this tour is at the guest's discretion during their free time; this tour is not available to wheelchair guests. We suggest to wear comfortable walking shoes (no high heels or wedges). Conservatively dressing is required to enter churches during your free time and weather-appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Most of the shops and restaurants are closed from November to Springtime. In case of weather alert issued by the Civil Protection, the tour will be cancelled as it will not be possible to access any village.

San Gimignano & San Donato Farm

    Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy

    Duration 8 hrs

Enjoy free time to explore the medieval town of San Gimignano and then visit a nearby farm for a traditional lunch and a selection of locally produced wines.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a picturesque drive through the charming Tuscan countryside towards the medieval walled town of San Gimignano. The architecture, particularly the 14 soaring tower-houses, has earned the town a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The exact purpose of the towers is disputed. Some believe that they were built as fortifications; others insist that the towers were merely meant to be signs of wealth.

Upon arrival, you have approximately two hours of free to experience the city at your leisure. You might start in the Piazza della Cisterna, which features the square’s namesake well, or the 13th-century Piazza Duomo, a square dotted with monuments and flanked by mansions. Regardless of where you choose to explore, hillside San Gimignano will exude a medieval atmosphere, much like it did at the height of its power and status.

Rejoining your coach, you will drive to nearby San Donato, a farm and winery characteristic of Tuscany. While enjoying a buffet lunch and wine tasting, you will discover that many of the ingredients are produced at San Donato, particularly the olive oil, saffron and four varieties of grapes.

The wines will be chosen upon your arrival, but it is likely that Chianti Classico, made entirely with sangiovese grapes, will be amongst the selections. Afterwards, you will transfer back to the pier in Livorno.

    Need to Know:

Note: The tour busses are not allowed into the historical center of San Gimignano. Walking on this tour is primarily at the guests’ discretion during the free time in San Gimignano. The city is a pedestrian only area and; therefore, a significant amount of walking is required, much of it up and down hills and over cobblestone surfaces in order to fully appreciate its main attractions. Maps of San Gimignano will be provided. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with walking difficulties. The order of the visits can change. Weather appropriate clothing (conservative dress is required to enter religious venues with shoulders and knees being covered); sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
