Depart Hilo Pier and head to Liliokulani Gardens with views of Hilo and the mountains. Proceed through historic downtown Hilo and up to Rainbow Falls. Continue on to new Saddle Road Highway stopping at scenic points of interest until reaching the vast lava fields of Mauna Loa Mountain. Disembark and experience this amazing area, while gaining an understanding of how this huge Island was formed and continues to grow.

Next stop is Mauna Kea Recreation Park, which has been recently upgraded with excellent amenities and nice views and limited vending. Walk around the park (7000 foot elevation) and take pictures of the 3 mountains. The journey back is very different even though you are on the same road and again, stop at scenic points of interest and possibly see volcanic activity at a great distance. Continuing back into Hilo drive to Mauna Loa Macnut Farm with its informational displays and broad range of products and snacks as well as ice cream, sandwiches and coffee (not included). As this tour does go to 7000 ft. it is highly recommended that guests have good mobility and can walk at least 100 yards unaided. The highway is new and of US highway standards.

Hamakua Explore the famed Hamakua Coast, home to magnificent country reminiscent of “old Hawaii”. Sparsely populated Hamakua is studded with breathtaking waterfalls, stunning valleys, and eccentric towns. Traveling north, first stop at Tex Drive-In, famous for made-to- order malasadas. The Valley of the Kings, Waipio Valley is a place of impossibly steep cliffs carved by plunging waterfalls cascading more than a thousand feet to the valley floor below.

Waipio Valley is still home to taro farmers as it has been for a thousand years. Turning off the highway we descend into Laupahoehoe Point. Laupahoehoe village was located here until the destruction left behind the 1946 tsunami forced the town to move to higher ground. Next stop at Akaka Falls State Park, the site of the largest easily accessible waterfall on the island. You’ll traverse a paved walking path right through the center of a lush rainforest to Akaka Falls, a stunning 442 foot waterfall that plunges down a sheer cliff and into the water below.

Leaving the highway behind you’ll travel up a bumpy old sugar cane gravel road to a remote waterfall hidden in a tropical rainforest. Spend time here relaxing, swimming in the cool mountain stream under the waterfall, and enjoy a Hawaii-style BBQ lunch complete with complimentary beer and champagne. Complete the day with a shopping stop with Hawaiian mac nut samples, Hawaii Island crafts, local products, Kona coffee and more.

Truly one of Hawaii Island’s hidden gems, this lush oasis is home to more than 2,000 plant species, birds and waterfalls. You’ll traverse a paved walking path right through the center of a lush rainforest to Akaka Falls, a stunning 442 foot waterfall that plunges down a sheer cliff and into the water below. The ongoing Volcanic Eruption on Hawaii Island has opened an access highway allowing us to show you the area and its impacts from a safe distance. Leaving your ship we will travel a short distance to Liliokulani Gardens a well maintained botanical setting overlooking Hilo Bay where we will have a brief stop for photos.

Continue through urban Hilo and the outlying suburbs toward Pahoa town, you will see the Transfer Station that avoided inundation by a few yards and a section of roadway that was covered and cleared giving a unique view of the impact of a flow through a populated area.

We continue driving through Pahoa Town which is the current center of Evacuation and Disaster management for the ongoing event. You will see and experience sulphur steam venting right at the highway edge as we pass by on steel plates covering cracks in the road surface.

Heading back down to sea level we arrive at Kalapana Painted Church, which was moved to its present location from advancing lava during a large 1992 lava flow that came from miles away.

Next stop is Uncle Roberts Cultural Enclave where you will walk out on to the new black sand beach, viewing the fissure plume rising into the air and the steam clouds generated as lava enters the sea.

You will then have time to buy a snack or drink at Uncle Roberts or next door at the Kalapana Store before we head off for a scenic ride along the coastline to the sea arch and turtle viewing spot, passing through beautiful tunnels formed by arching trees. We will then return to Hilo area via the Macnut Farm with opportunities to buy Macnut gifts or indulge in ice cream or lite snacks (at guest’s expense).

We will then travel to Rainbow Falls passing through Historic Hilo Town which itself has survived two modern era tsunamis and sits on lava flows from ancient times.
