Hike down to a black-sand beach of volcanic origin and discover the lasting influence of King Kamehameha, who was born nearby in the stunningly beautiful countryside.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at a statue of King Kamehameha I, which stands near the site where he was born. Kamehameha is best known for uniting the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom in 1810, and the statue recognizes his accomplishments.

A wonderfully scenic drive will then bring you to the Pololu Valley, a verdant landscape that is still only sparsely populated despite being first settled in the 15th century. You will have the option of admiring the spectacular coastal scenery from an elevated lookout or hiking down to the black-sand beach.

Made from lava that cooled instantly and shattered when it flowed into the sea, the black sand retains more heat than white sand. Consequently, sea turtles favor it for their nests.

You will enjoy another perspective of the Big Island’s rocky northern shore at Keokea Park, where you will stop for lunch. The coast isn’t protected by offshore reefs, so the surf here is strong, rough and wonderfully picturesque. It is an ideal setting for photos.

A bit inland, you will find Hawi, a free-spirited community with plenty of eclectic shops, including the Kohala Coffee Mill. You will stop there for a cup of coffee made from Kona beans and a scoop of local, hand-crafted ice cream.

You’ll discover old Hawaii at Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. This place of refuge has served as a political and religious sanctuary for the breakers of sacred law, or kapu, since ancient times. Here you’ll will find a temple that once housed the bones of deceased chiefs, and wooden images of the fierce gods that protect it.

Hop aboard a powered catamaran for a cruise through Kona’s history, when Hawaiian kings ruled these tropical isles. Your guide will provide the narration as you pass by noteworthy sites including temples, battlefields and an unusual recreation site, the holua or slide. Hawaiian royalty loved sports of all kinds, the most incredible of which they called sledding – down grass covered slopes and stone ramps.

James Cook is among the most famous and prolific British explorers and cartographers of all time. Sailing thousands of previously uncharted miles around the globe Captain Cook met his tragic end right here on Hawaii Island. Follow in the great explorers footsteps on this unique small group adventure by land and sea.

Start by heading south deep into Kona coffee country. Visit Bay View Farm, a working 24 acre coffee farm nestled on the slopes of Mauna Loa Volcano just above beautiful Kealakekua Bay and known for the best Kona coffee since 1984. You’ll sample 100% Kona Coffee at a gorgeous overlook with stunning views of Kealakekua Bay and the monument to Captain Cook standing on the only sliver of British land in the United States. Before coffee there was kapu, the ancient Hawaiian system of laws. Should a person break a kapu and face almost certain death they could make their way to a place of refuge and be absolved.

Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park is one of those places. Explore this historic 420 acre Park with your National Park Service-trained guide and see temple platforms, fishponds, and remnants of ancient life in Hawaii. Finally, take to the seas on a high-speed Zodiac-style raft. Explore sea caves and lava tubes along the rugged Kona Coast while on the lookout for marine life all around you. Reaching the sheltered and pristine waters of Kealakekua Bay you’ll come face to face with the monument to Captain Cook, along with snorkeling that ranks among the best in Hawaii. Perfect for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. Snorkel, swim, and enjoy a deli lunch onboard before returning.
