Hike through the rainforest in Huleia National Wildlife Refuge to two spectacular waterfalls, where you may swim in the refreshing pools below. The refuge is closed to the public to protect the endangered species, but you will enjoy special access to this natural wonderland. As you follow a descending trail, the guide will describe the lush flora, which may include wild coffee, lobster claw heliconia and hau trees, the branches of which Hawaiians once used to make outrigger floats. Named for its stand of graceful bamboo, Bamboo Falls is the smaller of the cascades, while Papakolea Falls plummets down more than 60 feet. Both are breathtaking. Feel free to swim, stand under the waterfalls for a natural massage or simply relax on the rocky shore and behold nature’s beauty. Later, you will gaze out over Menehune Fish Pond, home to dozens of avian species such as the nēnē, Hawaii’s state bird.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Behold two little-known waterfalls in Huleia National Wildlife Refuge.
    • Swim in the pools below the cascades or simply enjoy the beautiful peaceful settings.
    • Learn about the surrounding flora and fauna, much of it indigenous and endangered.
    • Admire nearby natural areas such as the Menehune Fish Pond.

Fly to the tiny isle of Grimsey to explore this northernmost inhabited part of Iceland which straddles the Arctic Circle. The flight from Akureyri airport takes just half an hour, but Grimsey might as well be a million miles away. Barely 100 souls reside here, along with the occasional polar bear dropping by from a drifting ice floe. Years ago, Grimsey was larger – but large chunks of it have tumbled into the sea over time and its residents have learned to make do with a diminishing land mass. Subsistence itself can be a challenge as a result, with islanders relying on locally caught seafood, scant imported goods and the most prized of edible island delicacies: bird eggs snatched by brave rappelers who clamber down Grimsey’s sheer sea cliffs during the brief summer. While mentioned in the earliest of Icelandic sagas, this miniscule outpost’s big claim to fame came late in the 19th century when the locals’ exceptional prowess at chess captured the outside world’s attention. Go figure.

    • Fly to a remote islet sitting astride the Arctic Circle and observe its unique lifestyle firsthand.
    • Wander Grimsey’s few streets, encounter its residents and wonder at how they manage to thrive here.
    • See the island’s signature lighthouse, a church built from driftwood and raucous colonies of puffins and other seabirds making a home along the cliffs.
    • Step across the Arctic Circle yourself, so you can boast about it later to friends at shipboard dinner.

Behold the natural beauty of northern Iceland and enjoy the cultural diversity by browsing a museum and watching an equestrian performance. A breathtakingly scenic drive will bring you to Goðafoss, the so-called “Waterfall of the Gods.” According to legend, it was named for the statues of Nordic gods that a chieftain threw into the water when Iceland converted to Christianity. The turf-roofed Laufás Folk Museum will add a different perspective of the country, as it is filled with curious household and agricultural items from the 19th century. The Icelandic horse is even more unsual because it is the world’s only breed that holds five gaits—walk, trot, gallop, tölt and the flying pace. While watching these strong-spirited horses perform at Brúnir Farm, you will understand why they are held in such high esteem. Back in Akureyri, you will meander through the world’s northernmost botanical gardens. A surprising variety of plants flourish there thanks to the area’s warm microclimate.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Hear the legend of Goðafoss waterfall while watching the thundering cascade.
    • Browse a turf-roofed museum with a variety of enlightening 19th-century items.
    • Watch a rare performance of Icelandic horses that highlights their unusual abilities.
    • Walk through the world’s northernmost botanical gardens.

Spend the day in paradise hiking with Hawaii's "Eco Tour Company of the Year” through the lush rainforest along streams punctuated by waterfalls from 10 to 40 feet high, each spilling into a large pool perfect for swimming or toe dipping. It’s unusual for a Hawaiian valley to have this many cascades so close together, making this a very desirable spot along Maui’s famous Hana Highway.

This hiking company is well known for their knowledgeable, naturalist guides, who provide a fascinating narrative on Hawaii's unique ecosystems. The hike is two miles round-trip and footing can be tricky in the forest.

    OVERVIEW

Take the helm of your own Rigid Inflatable Boat or RIB and zip through the turquoise waters off the northern coast of Tortola to Guana Island. After a briefing to ensure that you maximize the experience, you will follow the guide in a two-person RIB. You can be the captain or ride along as the passenger. The choice is yours. Either way, it will be exhilarating as you race through the sea caravan-style toward Guana Island, most of which is a natural reserve. Along the way, you might pause for the guide to point out and describe the highlights of other islands. You will disembark on White Bay, the longest stretch of sand on privately owned Guana Island, which is supposedly named for a promontory that resembles an iguana’s head. You might bask in the sun, take a refreshing swim and do most anything else that comes to mind.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    OVERVIEW

Ride across the island in an open-air Jeep to a natural pool along the sea and a cave adorned with centuries-old pictographs. You will enjoy uninterrupted views of the gorgeous countryside as you travel through Aruba’s rugged interior, often on roads only accessible in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. The seaside pool lies within the Arikok National Park, an environmentally protected wonderland that covers nearly 20% of the island. It will be immensely relaxing to ease into the crystal-clear waters of the secluded pool, which fills a bowl-like depression in the volcanically formed shoreline. Nearby, you will explore Fontein Cave, whose limestone walls are covered with reddish-brown drawings – some floor-to-ceiling – that the indigenous Arawaks created long ago. Anthropologists speculate that the artists may have been under the influence of psychedelics. To experience a weird sensation yourself, dip your feet into the freshwater pool nearby and enjoy a fish pedicure of sorts.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Ride through Aruba’s rugged interior, often on roads only suitable for a 4-wheel-drive vehicle.
    • Enjoy panoramic views of the volcanically formed terrain, which at times is desert-like.
    • Relax in a natural pool along the sea in the Arikok National Park.
    • View centuries-old pictographs that the Arawaks drew in the depths of Fontein Cave.
