Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights as you make your way to Mendenhall Valley. The first stop is at the Brotherhood Bridge. Here is where you will be able to take in the amazing views of the Mendenhall Valley. The bridge was and is of great historic and symbolic importance, representing a bridging of the gap between Native and Non-Native people and overcoming racial tensions. The bridge features 10 bronze medallions with the ANB crest and imagery, sculpted by Roy Peratrovich Jr. In honor of the ANB’s 50th anniversary. The crew on the medallions depicts the two great Tlingit moieties, Eagle and Raven. The ANB is the solid rock on which these moieties rest. Afterward your drive takes you to Juneau's Macaulay Salmon Hatchery and Visitor Center. There you will learn the value of ocean ranching to Juneau's commercial and sport fishing industries and the hatchery's role in keeping the area salmon population at sustainable levels.

OVERVIEW

Look for whales and other marine life while cruising through the pristine waters not far off from port, a luxury that most other destinations can’t offer. The bays, channels and passages within just minutes of Juneau are teeming with marine life, none more spectacular to watch than humpback whales. They put on quite the show while feeding on massive amounts of shrimp-like krill, their favorite food. A single humpback whale can eat a literal ton of these tiny creatures in one day using its baleen – a sort of strainer attached to its upper jaw – to separate the krill from the water. Sometimes, several humpback whales work together in a behavior known as bubble-net feeding to push the krill into a giant ball before consuming them from underneath right before breaching the water’s surface. It is a spectacular display of the power, beauty and ingenuity of these extraordinary marine mammals.

Enjoy this well rounded view of Alaska's capital city as you experience the splendor of Mendenhall Glacier, and dine Alaska-style at Gold Creek Salmon Bake. First you'll have time to explore the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area -- home to Alaska's only "drive-up" glacier. Here you'll want to explore the Visitor Center, various viewpoints of the glacier, and outlying trails as your visit time permits. Take a short ride to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake where you'll dine on grilled wild Alaska salmon and a variety of side dishes as fixings under a canopy. After your meal it's a short drive via shuttle back to the ship.

Soar by Goldbelt Tram up 1,800 feet above the city to take in one of the most expansive and beautiful views in Alaska. Once at the top of GoldbeltTram, you'll find that the Tr’ale house is the starting point of an extensive trail system, be sure to stop in and get the latest information about the trail conditions, plant life and wildlife. Your optional hike includes observation platforms in the rainforest and Alpine meadows. At the Mountain House, you can watch a complimentary film, Seeing Daylight. Cruise into beautiful Auke Bay looking for humpback whales feeding and breaching the water’s surface, and then enjoy a traditional Alaskan salmon bake.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief but picturesque drive to Auke Bay, a pristine waterway named after one of the Alaskan native first people. Upon arriving, you will board a jet-powered catamaran specifically designed for sightseeing and cruising Alaskan waters. Before long, you will be out in a prime area for whale watching.

Humpback whales are often spotted here, even close to shore, and the sight is breathtaking. You may see these majestic creatures breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding voraciously to fatten up for their winter migration south.

You might even spot them bubble-net feeding, a unique technique in which several whales swim in an ever-shrinking circle while blowing bubbles below a school of fish. The bubbles force the fish upwards and cluster them into a column, presenting the perfect opportunity for the whales to gorge themselves. It’s a mesmerizing sight you will not soon forget.

Following the whale-watching adventure, you will dine at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake. The salmon will be grilled over a fragrant alderwood fire, imparting the fish with a unique taste. The all-you-can-eat meal includes other signature Alaskan side dishes and desserts, so bring a hearty appetite. After dining, you might pan for gold at Salmon Creek Falls and see mining relics at the Wagner Mine.

Following a short motorcoach ride to scenic Auke Bay, you’ll board a Alaskan-built expedition vessel specially designed for wildlife viewing. Relax in the warm, comfortable, spacious main cabin, surrounded by large windows as your experienced Captain guides you through the island studded waters of Stephens Passage. Against a majestic backdrop of snow-capped peaks and glaciers, the onboard naturalist will explain the behavior and habitat of wildlife you may encounter, including humpback and killer whales, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoise, harbor seals, bald eagles, and more.

Become a citizen science observer for the day aboard a safari vessel, where you will observe marine animals such as humpback whales and collect data of great scientific value. After departing from the pier, you will soon board a safari vessel specifically designed for wildlife viewing. The custom-built vessel features large-panel windows and sits low in the water to offer the best vantage point from inside the heated cabin or out on the open bow. A naturalist guide will be onboard as you take on the role of a citizen science observer, which entails collecting data and documenting wildlife activities for a local university and regional science programs. During the cruise, you will attempt to track and record the behaviors of various marine creatures, including humpback whales. It will be a hands-on experience that may include invasive species monitoring, humpback whale identification, and recording observations of marine mammals. Your completed data log will be used to help scientists improve their understanding of the marine food chain and environmental factors that affect wildlife populations. You might even spot a humpback whale breaching the water’s surface, as they feed voraciously here to fatten up for their winter migration south. Whatever you observe and record, you can be assured that your effects will contribute to the safeguarding and deepening of our understanding of the delicate marine environments of Southeast Alaska.

Cruise into the pristine waters off Auke Bay in a yacht that combines pure luxury with the chance to spot humpback whales. It will be a first-class experience as this yacht is reserved for a maximum of only eight guests. As you cruise along – enjoying the all-inclusive drinks and local specialties on the charcuterie board – be sure to scan the shoreline for harbor seals and Stellar sea lions, species that use the land as haul-out sites where they can rest on the rocks and interact with each other. If you spot humpback whales feeding in the nutrient-rich waters, it will make for even more spectacular memories. The most vocal of all whales, humpbacks make a variety of sounds, which they string together to make songs that last as long as 30 minutes. More natural wonders await you while cruising Stephens Passage aboard a covered exploration vessel with large windows that provide panoramic views of the surroundings. The wildlife seen varies cruise to cruise, but you can expect to spot Humpback Whales breaching the water’s surface, Sea Lions and possibly Orca.
