OVERVIEW

Observe the wonders underwater through the completely transparent hull of a boat and then snorkel the crystal-clear waters for another perspective of the marine life. Unlike boats with only see-through bottoms, this one is almost entirely made of clear polycarbonate resin so there is nothing to block your view of life beneath the sea. Even the seating is transparent. Yet the boat is strong and sturdy enough to accommodate an outboard motor so you can easily zip through the water. You will pass over shipwrecks and coral reefs teeming with colorful fish before pausing at a sand bar that attracts huge numbers of red-cushion starfish, the largest species of starfish in the Caribbean Sea. Snorkeling will offer an even closer look at the bountiful marine life off Cozumel. Expect to see an ever-changing parade of tropical fish of every imaginable shape, color and size, including black groupers, neon-colored parrotfish and pinkish-purple Creole wrasses.

Experience Xcaret, one of the world’s most famous ecological parks where you will find underground rivers, natural pools and a myriad of attractions including the first Butterfly Pavilion in Mexico and a coral reef aquarium. As you get off the ferry in Playa del Carmen, your bi-lingual guide will take you to your transportation for a short ride to Xcaret. Spend hours exploring Punta Sur Eco Park, an ecological reserve where you can observe marine life, snorkel along a coral reef and relax on the sugar-white beach. Your adventure will begin with a thrill by climbing an observation tower to watch saltwater crocodiles in the lagoon below. The world’s largest living reptiles, these ominous-looking crocodilians can live to be 70 years old. A wonderful panoramic view of the reserve’s natural wonders awaits you atop the Celarain Lighthouse, whose interior holds a fascinating marine navigation museum. The ruins of El Caracol, a lighthouse that the Mayas may have built 700 years ago, lie nearby. You will be free to spend the remaining time at the beach doing whatever you please, even if it is nothing more ambitious than basking in the sun. See historical landmarks on an enlightening walk through downtown Cozumel and toast the occasion with a sampling of craft beers at the city’s first brewery. You will begin at Benito Juarez Square, an expansive plaza named for the national hero who in 1858 became the first indigenous president of Mexico. A clock tower dedicated to Juarez has risen above the square for more than a century. Just a block away, you will find San Miguel Church, a modest but iconic building that has long provided a spiritual anchor. After a bit of free time to shop for artisanal handicrafts, you will settle in at the microbrewery Cerveceria Punta Sur. A behind-the-scenes tour will reveal the more interesting aspects of the brewing process that produces signature beers that include an IPA, blonde ale and stout. To complement the tasting, you will be served a snack platter with Guacamole, boneless chicken wings and potato wedges.

OVERVIEW

Sample tacos at three venues – each specializing in a different style of taco – and learn a bit about the various ingredients and history of this iconic Mexican dish. Tacos have come a long way since Mexican silver miners supposedly invented them in the 18th century. Before your first sampling at the downtown Municipal Market, the guide will show you around the food stands and explain the types of taco seasonings. You will then be served two cochinita pibil tacos, a traditional Yucatan dish made with marinated and seasoned suckling pig meat that has been wrapped in banana leaves and roasted in an underground oven. The second and third venues will be restaurants, one known for seafood tacos, the other acclaimed for another type of taco. A refreshing beer will be served to complement your dining experience, along with samples of tequila, water or soda. Also, one drink will be included at each venue.

Challenge your senses and sense of reality in Xenses Park, a fantastic setting where up is down, right is left and nothing is as it appears.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a picturesque ride to the mainland and on to Xenses Park. You will then spend the next four hours or so exploring this highly unusual sensory park with all sorts of entertaining activities that are designed to challenge your perceptions and enhance your senses.

Starting at the welcome area, known as the Pinwheel, two different circuits are available. The Consensible Circuit will test your senses in areas such as The Way of the Dwarfs and Giants. Here, you feel small one second and then enormous a moment later. Enter the complete darkness of the Xensatorium and all of your senses but sight will sharpen. Then, there is the Xitric Garden, where you can drink lemonade straight from a faucet in a lemon tree.

The Inconsensible Circuit will play tricks on your sense of balance and reality. You might float down a super-salty river, soar through the air on a zip-line, and meander through a make-believe town where the laws of physics and logic don’t apply. Water will seem to defy gravity, and you may think you are ascending steps but are actually walking down them.

The experience will be extraordinarily fun, wildly amusing and mentally challenging. Afterwards, you will enjoy free time in Playa del Carmen to ease back into reality.

Become immersed in the Mayan culture through interactive experiences and explore an archaeological site that shows how the Mayas lived more than a millennia ago. Once a pilgrimage site where the ancient Mayas worshipped the moon deity, San Gervasio has been painstakingly excavated to reveal a fascinating complex of residences, temples and plazas. As you wander about the ruins, the guide will describe their historical importance and the lasting effect of the ancient world on life today. Another way to understand that influence is to live it, an opportunity that you will enjoy at Pueblo de Maíz, a theme park that recreates the pre-Columbian world on the island of Cozumel. You can experience it firsthand by indulging in a face-painting ceremony, grinding maize, making chocolate and tamales from scratch, and trying your hand at pitz, a Mayan ball game that was often played to settle disputes or simply to please the gods.

Watch your children interact with bottlenose dolphins in a sheltered cove while a trainer stands by to ensure a memorable experience for everyone. It will just take a few minutes to reach Dolphinaris Cozumel, an aquatic park dedicated to the conservation and protection of marine mammals. After a kid-friendly introduction to dolphin behavior and characteristics, your kids will ease onto a shallow submerged platform in the water that the dolphins inhabit. These marine mammals are exceptionally friendly, curious and highly intelligent. Chances are, the dolphins will soon approach as they enjoy human contact. Your children will be encouraged to touch, hug and even kiss the dolphins, if they are comfortable with that level of contact. All the while, you can observe the playful interaction between your kids and the dolphins.

Parents can take full advantage of everything Dolphinaris Cozumel has to offer. Stop by the restaurant for a la carta Lunch and unlimited drinks. Have the option to snorkel at Serenity Cove, a safe inlet where you can swim through an underwater aquarium filled with tropical fish and starfish! Kayak or paddle board, these activities are available on a first-come-first-served basis and if weather permits. Guests must be at least 5 years of age or older to participate in snorkeling.

Save, learn, help, protect, enjoy and contribute. This tour is for anyone who wants to leave Cozumel a little better than how they found it. You'll be led by the biologist’s team member who spearheads the Save the Endangered Sea Turtle Program. This is a hand’s on tour, where you'll actually help save the sea turtles. This is a groundbreaking, conservation system that has been adopted by other state wide programs with the help of local volunteers. Cozumel boasts the most sea turtle nests per kilometer than any other area in Mexico by a 3 to 1 ratio. The increased volume of fertile ground has as much to do with the island’s history as it does with this program, that had only been open to the local public and is now available to a select few visitors so they, too, can witness this marvel of nature.

There are several aspects to turtle protection and conservation and you'll be able to participate in the “save a turtle” portion. Every evening the turtles hatch and make their way to the sea. This is a natural process, but in the frenzy of the nest only about 80% of the hatched turtles actually have the stamina and energy to climb out. You'll help rescue those, that did not make it out the previous evening, by digging them out and they will be kept until they are mature enough to be released. This is extremely heartwarming and satisfying, as you'll be directly involved in saving the life of the little turtle and giving it another chance.
