It’s time to give back to the sea! Help us to restore the coral reefs of Cozumel with a group of local marine biologists. One of Cozumel’s Reef Restoration experts will provide you with a brief introduction to coral reproduction and coral restoration concepts. Part of your class includes an up close look at coral spawning and reproduction at our shore side aquarium along with a hand’s on program that includes assisting in coral fragment planting. Afterwards your guides will take you on a snorkel tour of our coral gardens where you’ll see coral transplanting or coral gathering and identification. You may also participate in beach clean-up activities, depending on the area’s needs.

After your participation in the restoration program you’ll have time to rinse off and relax on the beach. There is a restaurant and bar at the location with great local food and drinks (at guests own expense). Your guides and coral restoration team will be available afterwards for any further questions you may have.

As you foster meaningful relationship with the community, you’ll celebrate marine life and help continue conservation efforts for generations to come. This is a great way to explore a destination, understand and preserve the local ecosystem, while protecting the environment.

Activity would be in partnership with the local non-profit “Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration AC.”. Proceeds of this activity support the Coral Farms program in Cozumel, allowing Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration to continue their efforts to replenish coral reefs, as well as educate and empower others to take care and better our ocean.

Savor the flavors of Bonaire on this tour that showcases both the natural and man-made beauty of the island. After a drive through Kralendijk, you’ll travel along the scenic route up the coast for views of the ocean, huge candelabra cacti and mesquite trees. If you look to the west, you'll no doubt see the small and uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire. Continue on to Goto Lake, a natural salt water lake and a feeding ground for the island's shy pink flamingos. Ride along narrow tree-lined country lanes which will bring you to Dos Pos (Two Wells), a natural drinking well for animals.

You’ll head into the heart of island towards the picturesque Rincon Valley, once home to the Arawak Indians. After explorer Amerigo Vespucci landed here in 1499, they were forced into slavery and taken to plantations in Hispaniola.

Later, slaves were brought here from Africa to work on the ranches and in the salt fields. As you drive through the village, your guide will point out sites of interest. You’ll be able to get a taste of the island with a visit to the popular outdoor venue, where you sample locally produced Cactus liqueur.

Continue your drive along the stunning east coast for views of the ocean and then travel south to the salt flats and mountains. Along the way your guide will explain how salt is produced today and how it was mined by the slaves in the 19th century. Visit the original slave huts which were used as shelters for the slaves working in the salt pans and see the cone shaped white salt mountains before, heading back to your cruise ship pier.

Depart from the Malacate Pier on your air-conditioned bus for a scenic one hour bus ride to the picturesque archaeological site of Nim Li Punit, or "Large Hat". Nim Li Punit is in the Mayan Kekchi language. This is the name given to this site, due to a depiction on a stela of one of its rulers wearing a very large head-dress. This unique Mayan ceremonial site was built on a hillside overlooking the fertile Toledo low-lands where crops were grown to feed the Mayan rulers that occupied this temple. Here at this well-maintained site, there is a small museum and welcoming center where you can observe some of the large stelas and artifacts that have been preserved. Nim Li Punit, also boasts a well-preserved ball-court in the center of the complex and a Mayan observatory is also located within one of the various plazas. This entire site is canopied over with large trees, providing a shady comfortable environment for viewing this interesting and beautiful archaeological site.

After your tour you will head to the Big Falls Outpost for a warm welcome, a delicious and a traditional Belizean lunch. Here you will be able to purchase various local drinks, and souvenirs.

It's now time to head back to your ship docked at Harvest Caye, it's been an interesting, fun and educational adventure, one filled with Mayan history and an excellent overview of Belize's natural wonders.

    Mombacho Volcano Hike

Hike through a biologically diverse cloud forest that rims a volcanic crater, and then explore Granada, a colonial city that Spanish conquistadors founded in 1524. more...

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a leisurely one and three-quarters hour drive north through the emerald-green countryside and into pristine Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve. At the base of the namesake volcano, you will transfer to a 4WD truck and travel over 3,200 feet in elevation to the top of the magnificent Mombacho Volcano. The drive itself is worth the trip as you will climb grades of up to 40 percent through several types of forest ecosystems: a drier tropical forest, semi-moist broad leaf tropical forest, and a spectacular and very rare cloud forest. The higher you go, the cooler the temperature. It’s an ideal environment for growing coffee and there are numerous plantations within the forest.

Upon reaching the summit, you'll take a guided one mile hike (approximately 90 minutes) around one of Mombacho's four craters. As you traverse the primarily natural paths, you will learn about and observe the rich eco-system of the area that boasts steaming fumaroles, over 50 species of mammals, 174 species of birds and 90 different types of orchids. Listen carefully during your trek and you will notice that natural sounds are amplified by the craters.

Following your hike, you will return to the base of the volcano and drive on to nearby Grenada for a traditional Nicaraguan lunch. Free time follows, so you can stroll about this magnificent colonial city nestled on Lake Nicaragua’s northern shore. Be sure to see the much-admired San Francisco Convent, which now houses a cultural center with fine pre-Columbian statues. For inspired shopping, head for Granada’s central plaza.

At the appointed time and location, you will rejoin your coach and head back to the pier, stopping along the way at La Virgen Crossing for a breathtaking view of the twin volcanoes towering above an island in Lake Nicaragua.
