Start your journey with an introduction to the port of Sydney and a panoramic drive through the historic North End. Once acquainted with the area, step back in time to 1744 and experience the Fortress of Louisbourg—the largest fortified town outside of Europe. Louisbourg was once a thriving seaport and capital of Île Royale (Cape Breton Island). —the third busiest harbour in North America and one of France's key centers of trade and military strength in the New World. Situated along a rocky Atlantic coastline, the site now serves as an exciting and entertaining lesson in Canadian, American, French and British history. You’ll see a selection of buildings and exhibits as costumed actors reenact the lives of specific individuals residing here during the pre-siege era.

Experience the life of a military officer as you visit the home of Captain and Madame DeGannes. Discuss household duties with the servant in the Engineer’s Residence and discover some tip and tricks for open-hearth cooking (which every domestic cook needs to know); then wander up to the spectacular chapel in the King’s Bastion. If you’re interested, stop and talk to a soldier about his guard duty, living conditions, security and (most interestingly) diet.

Newport is as famous for its coastal beauty, as it is for its architectural magnificence. Enjoy both on this tour that combines a spectacular stroll along the Cliff Walk trail with a visit to The Breakers, one of Bellevue Avenue’s most spectacular mansions. Begin with a nature walk along Newport’s famous cliff walk, resplendent with wildflowers, colorful birds, and interesting geology. This 1 1/4 mile stretch takes you on a path that runs between the rocky coastline and the “backyards” of many of Bellevue Avenue’s palatial cottages. As you walk, your guide will share the stories of America's "gilded age" and the cast of characters that made Newport one of the nation's wealthiest summer resorts. The walk will conclude at The Breakers (sometimes due to congestion, the walk will begin after touring the mansion).

From the 1870s to the 1920s, the Vanderbilts were one of America’s most affluent families and commissioned the most prestigious and expensive architectural firms to build a series of homes for them along the East Coast. In Newport, these homes, amusingly called “cottages,” are unparalleled in historic significance and beauty. Built during the period known as the “gilded age,” they’re now National Historic Landmarks. The Breakers is considered the grandest of all of the Newport summer cottages. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, this Italian Renaissance palace was completed in 1892 in less than three years at a cost of approximately $11 million, which would be over $200 million today! Originally constructed in France and reassembled here, the Grand Hall boasts 50 foot ceilings and has the largest room of any Newport mansion.

A beautiful view of the Penobscot Mountains and Bubbles Hill can be seen from this location. The park is home to over 50 species of mammals so keep your eyes peeled for moose, black bear and white tail deer as you make your way around the Park Loop Road. Weather and traffic/crowd conditions permitting, there will be a photo stop from atop the 1,530-foot Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on North America's eastern seaboard. Here, you will have the opportunity to take in spectacular panoramic views and enjoy photo opportunities of Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. This wonderful vantage point allows you to see how glaciers have carved through the granite cliffs to form a breathtaking landscape of lush forest, lakes and valleys. In the event the weather or traffic prevents a stop here, an alternate scenic photo stop will be made in the park at the tour guide's discretion.

Following this last stop, you will re-board your coach and transfer back to the pier.

Your tour begins with a ride through Charlottetown, the birthplace of Canada. Sit back and relax, enjoying views as you travel en route to Cavendish, home of the Green Gables Heritage Place, the house that inspired the children’s classic. In fact, it is hard to think of Prince Edward Island without mentioning author Lucy Maud Montgomery, who lived here during the late Victorian era and it was the setting of her novel, Anne of Green Gables. Published in 1908, the tale of a spunky red haired orphan was an instant hit and from that moment on, visitors flocked to Cavendish, leading to the establishment of the national park.

The homestead immortalized in the book is exceptionally beautiful and fans will get a kick out of exploring the ground they have read so much about. Relatives of the author often offer guided tours and you never know when they will appear to greet guests! You may browse the gift shop for books and souvenirs. You’ll travel through the stunning park to the red sandstone cliffs, set against white capped waves for an incredible photo opportunity .

Admire the natural beauty surrounding the Bay of Fundy by visiting a coastal park full of hiking trails, lookouts and historical buildings from the years when this area was logged.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to St. Martins, a lovely coastal village settled in 1783. It is known for its twin covered bridges, which you will view from a vantage point that allows you to capture both bridges in one spectacular shot. Continuing on, you will travel the winding Fundy Trail Parkway, passing forest lookouts, more beautiful beaches and the spectacular Bay of Fundy that rims the park.

At the Big Salmon Interpretive Centre, you will watch an enlightening video about the park’s history and the modest lodge that newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst built nearby. You will then have free time to enjoy the attractions that interest you most. You might meander the hiking paths, cross the suspension footbridge that spans the crystal-clear Salmon River, and explore the replica sawmill.

Be sure to see Flower Pot Rock, a tall thin rock tower that the pounding sea has shaped over time. The bay’s rising tides have also created sea caves in the red sandstone, which you will see on the return to St. Martins. While totally submerged during high tide, the caves are easy to reach at low tide and make for a memorable photo any time. Following lunch at a restaurant that overlooks the caves, you will return to Saint John.

Board your motor coach and brace yourself as you set out on a South Shore Adventure of Nova Scotia! Visit Peggy’s Cove, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay and discover their colourful houses, museums, art galleries, souvenir shops, cafe’s and restaurants. This tour will demonstrate the beautiful diversity of the South Shore and allows you free time to plot your journey at each location, whether you want to savor the local foods and atmosphere in one of the cafe’s/restaurants, buy souvenirs, or just mosey along viewing the impressive sites and taking pictures, the choice is yours!

At Peggy's Cove, discover why this picturesque seaside village with its stately lighthouse has been an inspiration to artists and writers for generations. It is here that the power and majesty of the Atlantic Ocean truly comes to life along the granite shores of the Cove - worn and shaped through the crashing surf.

Continuing on, you will arrive at another extraordinarily scenic area, Old Town Lunenburg. Established in 1753, it is North America’s best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement. The original layout and appearance has been retained so faithfully that UNESCO designated Lunenburg a World Heritage site. During free time, you can explore the brightly colored Old Town, which is easy to navigate because the streets follow a rectangular grid pattern designed in Britain. You can expect to see 18th-century wooden buildings and perhaps a replica of the Bluenose, Canada’s legendary racing ship that was launched here in 1921. Finally, we will visit Mahone Bay, considered to be one of the most attractive towns in Canada. This small and friendly community is renowned for the view across the Bay of three prominent churches. Take time to explore the many varied and local offerings along lovely Main Street before relaxing on the return drive to the Port of Halifax.

    OVERVIEW

Discover how Halifax responded to the sinking of the Titanic by visiting sites that associated with the tragedy. More than 120 mostly unidentified victims of the disaster are buried at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, their small black granite tombstones engraved with the date of the sinking – April 15, 1912. You will also see the former Edwardian mansion of George Wright, a prominent local businessman who perished on the luxury liner. His will stipulated that his house be left to the Council of Women, an organization that continues to meet there and follow their original mission of bettering the lives of women and children. Services for many of the victims of the sinking were conducted at the Cathedral Church of All Saints. After browsing the church, you will continue to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which holds the world’s largest collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • See four landmarks in Halifax with ties to the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic.
    • Visit a cemetery for victims of the tragedy and a church that held services for them.
    • Know the story of the wealthy local philanthrope that died on the Titanic and what became of his Edwardian mansion.
    • Browse a collection of artifacts from the Titanic in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

    OVERVIEW

Gain an understanding of how Halifax recovered and rebuilt following a devastating explosion in 1917 that leveled more than a square mile of the city. Two ships colliding in the harbor - one carrying munitions for World War I - caused the blast and resulting tsunami that killed more than 2,000 people. After pausing at a memorial bell tower dedicated to those who lost their lives in the tragedy, you will visit the Hydrostone Market, a collection of shops that was built on ground zero for the explosion. It is a fine example of early 20th-century urban planning, much like the Halifax Public Gardens reflects Victorian Age horticultural principles. As you will see, city hall boasts a Victorian architectural design and survived the explosion. St. Paul's Anglican Church wasn't as fortunate, since Its windows were blown out, but as the story goes, one was left with the deacon’s imprints.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit areas of Halifax that were flattened in a 1917 explosion and beautifully reconstructed.
    • Hear about the force of the explosion, the world’s largest prior to the atomic bomb.
    • Pause at a memorial to victims of the explosion and meander the Halifax Public Gardens.
    • See the face-shaped imprint that the explosion left on a particular church window.

    OVERVIEW

Delve into the history of Halifax through iconic attractions that reflect events that shaped the city since its founding in 1749. Camp Hill takes its name from the military troops that were camped there during the 1834 cholera epidemic. Military graves from both world wars are scattered throughout the Camp Hill Cemetery, as well as the graves of two of Canada’s founding fathers. The Halifax Public Gardens are noteworthy for being a rare example of a Victorian garden that has changed little since opening in 1867. Its setting is extraordinarily tranquil. Star-shaped Halifax Citadel – the fourth fort to perch on the hilltop – was built in 1856 to keep the peace. It still looks impenetrable, a reason why this National Historic Site was never attacked. You will also drop by the Old Town Clock, which rises above Citadel Hill. Although it has been ticking since 1803, the building around it is replica from the 1960s.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit a historical cemetery where prominent local citizens and soldiers are buried.
    • Meander through Halifax Public Gardens, an urban oasis of Victorian design.
    • See the imposing Halifax Citadel, a 19th-century star-shaped fortress.
    • Behold the Old Town Clock, a Palladian-style landmark on Citadel Hill.

Follow a circuitous road through Mount Desert Island and stop along the way at breathtaking spots that inspired some of America’s most gifted 19th-century landscape painters. The road winds through stunningly beautiful Acadia National Park, which adherents of the Hudson River School art movement painted in a style that Romanticism heavily influenced. Acclaimed artists such as Thomas Cole, Thomas Moran and Frederic Edwin Church were all captivated by the natural wonders, which look much the same today as they did in their time. You will pause at Sieur de Monts Spring, the overlook at dramatic Schooner Head and at serene Jordan Pond, a sheltered glassy lake that ancient glaciers carved out of the landscape. You will also drop by precipitous Otter Cliff and Otter Cove, which offers sweeping views of the sea and inland. At each stop, the guide will provide entertaining anecdotes about the artists that captured these majestic landscapes on canvas.
