Discover the richly layered Indian influence throughout the province of KwaZula-Natal by talking to locals at a spice market, in a settlement where Mahatma Ghandi lived and at a Hare Krishna temple. Your immersion into India’s contribution to South Africa will begin at Victoria Street Market, the oldest in Durban. While browsing the stalls, you will see piles of freshly ground spices, statues of Buddha and countless other Indian products while Indian music plays in the background. Continuing on to the nearby Phoenix Settlement, you see where the revered Ghandi started his first newspaper and begin experimenting with communal living and pursuing interfaith harmony and social justice. His influence is still felt throughout the community. You will then visit the largest Hare Krishna temple in Durban, a cultural treasure that blends Vedic and contemporary architecture. As you meander about the large and opulent temple, be sure notice the beautiful tile work, crystal chandeliers and golden lotus-shaped statuettes.
