Bob Marley Experience
hrs Estimate Duration
Delve into the life and times of reggae legend Bob Marley by visiting his birthplace and final resting place in the mountain hamlet Nine Mile.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a meandering and wonderfully scenic drive inland toward Nine Mile, the birthplace of reggae superstar Bob Marley. As you wind through the lush hills along zig-zagging roads, you will listen to some of Marley’s most famous songs, which will put you in just the right mood for the adventure that lies ahead.
Nine Mile is a teeny rural town, and the main attraction is the singer’s former home, now known as the Bob Marley Mausoleum and Museum. While touring the modest two-room residence, you learn about Marley’s humble upbringing and Rastafarian beliefs and see the stone pillow that he rested his head on for inspiration. It must have worked, as some of Marley’s gold records and awards are displayed in the museum.
You will also hear about Marley’s “One Love” philosophy and his death from cancer in 1981 at age 36. At the mausoleum behind the house, you will see Marley’s final resting place, a small family cemetery where his half-brother and mother are also buried.
On the return to the pier, you will become even further immersed in the Jamaican way of life by dining at a restaurant that specializes in “jerk” cooking. The unique flavor of “jerk” comes from generous spices and the slow-cooking over green pimento wood coals.
