Andalucia'S Gastronomic Heritage
hrs Estimate Duration
This enlightening culinary excursion through the Spanish countryside entices the palate with tastings at an olive oil factory and award-winning vineyard.
Depart from the pier and enjoy a scenic drive inland to Cherin, a village lying in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada National Park. Nurtured by the mild Mediterranean climate, olive trees have flourished in the area for thousands of years, allowing Spain to become one of the world's leading producers of olive oil. It's an essential ingredient in products ranging from cosmetics to pharmaceuticals. Of course, olive oil is used extensively for culinary purposes as you'll discover by touring the factory and then sampling the freshly processed oil.
The last stop on this memorable gastronomic tour is the Dominio Buenavista Winery in nearby Ugíjar. Although the first grape vines were only planted here in 1992, it wasn't long before the winery was honored for vintages such as its elegant Tempranillo, fruity Viogner, and velvety, well-rounded Cabernet Sauvignon. This region of Spain also produces a world-renowned variety of sausages and hams, especially dry-cured ham, which is considered a national treasure. After sampling some of their finest wines in the cellar and enjoying a large appetizer of Spanish specialties, you will be treated a full lunch in the bodega. You´ll find it difficult to leave this enchanting place and rejoin your coach for the 90-minute drive back to the pier in Almeria.
