    Wilderness Hike

Hike an abandoned logging road through the wilds of Chichagof Island, which lies within the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest. Even the drive there will be spectacular, as you will pass through the seemingly endless natural beauty of Spasski River Valley before reaching Tongass, America’s largest national forest. You can then participate in three different activities, each thrilling in its own way. You may begin by strolling through the jungle canopy, much of it along suspension bridges and wooden boardwalks. From this vantage point high above the jungle floor, you can expect to see splashes of colorful flowers clinging to vine-draped trees, chirping tropical birds flitting through the air, and creatures such as iguanas and lizards perched on the branches.

A more adrenaline-pumping adventure awaits you on the zip line, which involves sitting in a harness and darting through the treetops from platform to platform. It will be absolutely exhilarating as you pass over trees and through pathways cut out of the dense foliage at heart-pounding speeds. You will be treated to a literal bird’s-eye view of the gorgeous tropical landscape below so don’t blink because it will go by fast.

For the ultimate thrill, try the Zuperman Zip. It is the area’s only forward-facing zip line with a special harness that allows you to fly through the air headfirst like Superman. Afterwards, you will return to the pier in Roatan.

Ichkabal Expedition & Bacalar Lagoon Escape

    Costa Maya, Mexico

    Duration 6 hrs

    OVERVIEW

Explore Mayan ruins that are little-known because of their remote jungle location and spend free time relaxing at a lagoon with striking aqua-blue water. Although it will take nearly two hours to reach the Ichkabal archaeological site, it will be well worth the time. Only open since 2024, the ancient Maya city is larger than the more renowned and more visited Chichén Itzá. It also allows the rare opportunity to climb its Great Pyramid, whose summit offers spectacular views for those who climb its 140 steps. Built between 350 B.C. and 50 B.C., the monumental structures – which include an Acropolis with administrative buildings – suggest that Ichkabal was a major political and ceremonial center. You will also visit nearby Bacalar, a freshwater lagoon that dense mangroves shelter. The color of the water is usually a startling blue, but it changes with the angle and intensity of the sunlight. Feel free to swim in its glass-smooth waters.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit Ichkabal, a great and remote Mayan city that just recently opened to the public.
    • Be awed by its monumental buildings, which were constructed as early as 350 B.C.
    • Climb to the top of the Great Pyramid for the ultimate view of Ichkabal and beyond.
    • Spend free time relaxing at Bacalar, a stunningly blue lagoon fed by underwater cenotes.

Golden Hour Birdwatching And Kayak Tour

    St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

    Duration 2 3/4 hrs

    OVERVIEW

Paddle a kayak through a mangrove-lined lagoon as the sun begins to set, a time known as the golden hour because the radiant natural light exudes a warm glow. After a briefing to ensure that you maximize the experience, you will ease into a kayak and follow the guide into the sanctuary lagoon that rims the southern shore of St. Thomas. The mangroves provide an ideal habitat for wildlife, especially birds that roost each evening in these environmentally important trees. Kayaks make little noise in the water so the birds won’t be disturbed even if you paddle closely to them. You may see snowy egrets and little blue herons wading in the shallows, endangered brown pelicans taking shelter and yellow warblers singing their sweet whistled songs as they dart in and out of the mangroves’ branches and aerial roots. The guide will help identify the birds and describe the lagoon ecosystem.
