OVERVIEW

Participate in a Balinese Hindu ritual known as melukat that is believed to purify the body, mind and soul. A rural temple courtyard will offer an ideal serene setting for this ancient ritual, which is deeply rooted in the Balinese culture. The name “melukat” is derived from a Sanskrit word that means “free from suffering” as that is one of the intentions. To enhance the experience, you will change into temple attire such as a sarong before joining the purification ceremony, during which you will wash with holy water and pray. These rituals have different purposes, some of them very specific such as eliminating misfortune, diminishing illness and encouraging prosperity. The ceremony that you will engage in will likely feature mantras, incense and the gentle chime of bells, all of which are meant to help release negative energy. Afterwards, feel free to reflect on the power of the melukat ritual and its positive effect.

Need to Know:

Note: This physically demanding tour involves moderate walking, multiple steps, uneven terrain, sand, dirt, cobblestones, boulders, and slippery wet surfaces inside the ritual area, making it unsuitable for wheelchair users or guests with mobility limitations. Guests must wear temple attire such as a sarong and sash (provided or personal items allowed) and bring a towel and change of clothes; shoes may need to be removed. Due to local religious customs, women on their menstrual period may not enter the temple. Restrooms on-site are very basic, including squat-style toilets. The ritual requires stepping on wet stones and navigating natural spring areas where surfaces can be slippery, and guests must exercise caution. Bali’s weather may include heat, humidity, and rain, affecting comfort and safety, and the order of activities may vary based on operational needs. Active participation is required, and guests who miss the return transportation must make their own arrangements.
