This tour is available for prebooking's only. Soar high above the gorgeous northern shore of Maui in a helicopter and land in a rainforest for a closer look at the tropical landscape. You will fly over thundering waterfalls, the famed windsurfing setting at Ho'okipa Beach, and the mega-surf break at Pe'ahi, a spot with such monstrous swells that it is nicknamed "Jaws." Many of the locations are so remote that they can only be observed from the air, as there are no roads, only dense jungle and precipitous cliffs. One such site is Keopuka Rock, a steep sliver of an island known as Jurassic Rock because it was featured in the opening sequence of the movie "Jurassic Park." In time, you will land in a rainforest clearing and toast the experience with a glass of champagne. The landscape there is blanketed with banana trees, papayas, pineapples and lilkoi, a colorful passion flower that grows on a vine.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • See Maui’s gorgeous northern shore while flying in a helicopter with wraparound windows.
    • View famed surfing and windsurfing beaches, roaring waterfalls and remote sea cliffs.
    • Touch down in a rainforest (landing is dependent on the current weather conditions at flight time) and celebrate the experience with a champagne toast.
    • Total airtime approximately 20 minutes, each way. Landing approximately 30 minutes.

    HELPFUL HINTS

    • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.

    OVERVIEW

Ride an electric bike inland to Connell Lake while admiring the natural beauty of the surrounding Tongass National Forest. As you will discover during the initial briefing, the electric-enhanced bicycle will boost your pedal power, allowing you to ride farther and negotiate hills with considerably less effort than with a conventional bicycle. It's only about three miles to the Connell Lake, all of it staggeringly beautiful. Sitka black-tailed deer are commonly seen along this route. The flora is also exceptional, especially the carnivorous sundew plants that consume insects that they trap on their sticky pads. Upon reaching the lake, you will learn how it was created in 1952 by damming several creeks to provide millions of gallons of freshwater to the Ketchikan pulp mill. The dam continues to feed water to different resources throughout the community even after the pulp mill closed more than 25 years ago. Before pedaling back, you can relax around a campfire under a canopy of coniferous trees or walk a short nature trail.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Pedal an electric-enhanced bicycle to and from Connell Lake, a roundtrip of about six miles.
    • Gain a historical perspective of the manmade lake, which once provided millions of gallons of freshwater needed to operate the Ketchikan pulp mill.
    • Learn about the indigenous flora and fauna from the naturalist guide.

Each two-person Sea-Cycle boat allows for leisurely pedaling yet leaves your hands free to snap photos of the surrounding natural wonders. There is plenty to view, especially when passing Tongass National Forest, the largest such protected landscape in America. Cruise through the National Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary in a Zodiac, a vessel that is ideal for speedy maneuvering and up-close viewing of marine creatures.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a scenic ride across the neck of Maui to lovely Maalaea Bay on the island's southern shore. Here, you'll board a Zodiac vessel that can navigate into areas other vessels can't, offering you a close-up view of the marine life.

You will be cruising into the National Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary. It is one of the favorite mating and birthing grounds for humpbacks because of the water's ideal temperature and depth and the scarcity of killer whales, which are the young humpbacks' most feared natural predators.

As you zip through the water, you can expect to see humpback whales putting on a spectacular show of breaching the surface, tail and fin slapping, and spy hopping, where only the whale's head pops out of the water. The males are known for their singing as part of the mating ritual. Humpback whales come to Maalaea Bay each year to breed after a month or so of migrating from their feeding grounds in Alaska, nearly 3,500 miles away.

To enhance the whale-watching experience, a naturalist will be onboard explaining the whales' behavior during this time of the year. Feel free to ask questions during the two hours or so spent on the water, after which you will return to Kahului.

Hike a winding forest trail through some of the most spectacular countryside on Kauai, a natural wonderland that lives up to its nickname, the “Garden Island.”

After departing from the pier, you will learn about the history of Kauai from the local guide, who will regale you with stories of the "Garden Island." The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain, Kauai is covered by tropical rainforest, emerald-green valleys and jagged mountains of volcanic origin. It is a gorgeous setting for hiking through the forest.

The trail that you will follow covers about five miles and is immensely picturesque the entire time. As you hike through the lush wilderness, you will gaze out over some of the most extraordinary terrain in Hawaii. You can expect to see thundering waterfalls, primeval mountains and deep valleys, all created by ancient volcanic activity.

Along the way, the guide will point out the most interesting flora and fauna, especially those endemic to Kauai. You may see indigenous white plumbago in bloom, unusual ferns on the forest floor, brightly colored bromeliads clinging to tree branches and native forest birds such as the Kauai Amakihi and the Anianiau, the smallest of Hawaii’s honeycreepers.

This hiking company is well known for their knowledgeable, naturalist guides, who provide a fascinating narrative on Hawaii's unique ecosystems. The hike is two miles round-trip and footing can be tricky in the forest.

See the island’s most spectacular natural wonders, starting with a hike to Kilauea Crater in Volcanoes National Park.

The setting is so extraordinary that UNESCO deemed the park a World Biosphere site and a World Heritage site. To reach the crater, you will hike three miles roundtrip. The sights along the way will make it well worth the effort, as the volcano has been steadily erupting since 1983 and the surrounding countryside is dramatic. Afterward, you will pause for photos at magnificent Rainbow Falls, which is named for the rainbows that often form in the surrounding mist. Another photo opportunity awaits you at Liliuokalani Gardens, which pays tribute to the Japanese immigrants that worked in the sugarcane fields more than a century ago. Enjoy a local shopping stop where you can sample Hawaiian macadamia nuts before returning to the ship.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Hike through the dramatic countryside to a volcanic crater that continues to erupt.
    • Enjoy photo opportunities at Rainbow Falls and Liliuokalani Gardens.
    • Enjoy a local shopping stop and sample Hawaii macadamia nuts.

Zodiac Whale Watching is the best way to see the migrating humpback whales. Depart the tender pier to search out these gentle giants who come to Hawaii to mate and give birth. We are never sure where they are going to surface but the hurricane rafts are fast, getting you to the action quickly. We often see multiple whale pods on each trip. Naturalist guides will tell you about the humpback whale migration pattern and behavior and drop a hydrophone to listen to a whale song! Zodiac rafts accommodate small groups, so everyone gets a front row seat. Soft drinks and snacks are included.

This is a seasonal tour available from January – March.

    OVERVIEW

Paddle around Kahului Harbor in an outrigger canoe while admiring the seaside landmarks and learning about the history of the Hawaiian Islands. As an introduction, you will watch an entertaining film that describes how ancient Polynesians emigrated to the islands on double-hulled canoes using natural phenomena such as stars and ocean currents to guide them across 2,000 miles of open water. After a briefing under a traditional thatched-roof structure known as a hale, you will paddle off into Kahului's large sheltered harbor. You may be surprised by the stability of the canoe, much of which comes from the attached outrigger hull. To ensure that you maximize the experience, paddlers from a local canoe club will accompany you and describe harbor highlights such as Kahului Beach and Ho'aloha Park. You will also see where King Kamehameha I landed in 1790 in his successful quest to unify the Hawaiian Islands.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Paddle around the harbor in an outrigger canoe like the ones ancient Polynesians used.
    • Watch an enlightening film about the history of Hawaii with an emphasis on Maui.
    • Pass attractions such as Kahului Beach and the urban greenspace Ho’aloha Park.
    • See your cruise ship from a unique perspective on the water.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief but scenic drive up the coast to Totem Bight State Historical Park, where you will become immersed in the culture of the Alaskan Natives of Southeast Alaska. Starting in the 1940s, the CCC constructed the park here in the rainforest to accurately present the customs and family life to visitors. As you wander through the park, you will see colorful, hand-carved totem poles and a large clan house similar to ones built in the early 19th century. Your guide will go into detail about the different styles of poles. After walking through the exhibit, you will depart for lake Harriet Hunt. Here, you will board a 37-foot canoe patterned after the ones that the Tlingit and Haida built. The lake provides a beautiful setting for your paddling adventure because the dense forest comes to the edge of the water. In time, you will disembark for an Alaskan-style snack. Then, you will have the opportunity to walk through an old-growth forest while your guide points out the most interesting flora and perhaps fauna. Afterwards, you will return to Ketchikan.

See film locations from Raiders of the Lost Ark. And with Indiana Jones in mind, take a leap off a rope swing for a refreshing dip in a cool mountain pool. Rise in the wee hours to travel from sea level to 10,000 feet and the top of Haleakala, Maui's massive volcano. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won't one day wake up. The Hawaiians revere it as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos.

You'll be perched on top as dawn breaks and the sun begins to rise, spreading a glow across the landscape. Once it is light enough you'll marvel at the crater's eerie landscape of cinder cones and ancient lava formations. If the day is clear, you may even make out two other towering peaks - Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

Follow a spectacularly scenic coastal road to the historical George Inlet Lodge for a classic Alaskan crab feast. Being one of the few highways in this part of Revillagigedo Island, it is surrounded by natural beauty that makes the drive all the more memorable. Upon reaching the waterfront George Inlet Lodge, you will be served an entrée of steaming-hot Dungeness crabs. These tasty crustaceans are caught in the chilly waters of the Pacific Ocean and have become synonymous with Alaskan dining. The meal includes plenty of other local specialties such as smoked salmon dip and a dessert topped with seasonal blueberries. Afterwards, you might browse the remote lodge, which has quite the history. It was originally built in the 1940s as a salmon cannery bunkhouse. When the cannery closed decades later, the bunkhouse was transported about 90 miles up the George Inlet waterway to its present location, which was once the site of a gold mine.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Feast on Dungeness crabs and other Alaskan delicacies at the George Inlet Lodge.
    • Enjoy the waterfront setting of the remote lodge and learn a bit about its history.

Discover the Hawaii that British explorer Captain James Cook knew when he arrived in 1778, much of it in the shadow of Mauna Loa volcano. While touring the appropriately named Bay View Farm, which offers a beautiful view of Kealakekua Bay, you will see how the farm grows, harvests, and roasts Kona coffee beans. A sampling will confirm why the coffee that flourishes in the rich volcanic soil is so revered. Nearby stands Pu'uhonua, a spiritual site where criminals once sought refuge and absolution from Hawaiian priests. While browsing the grounds, you will see temple platforms and the remains of other structures that were intact in Captain Cook's time. A high-speed Zodiac-style raft will bring you to an obelisk marking the spot where Cook was killed following a dispute with the Hawaiians that lived on the bay. Feel free to swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters.

You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui's massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey - from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. You'll marvel at the crater's eerie landscape of cinder cones and ancient lava formations. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won't one day wake up.

The Hawaiians revere Haleakala as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos. At sunset you may think that Pele has awakened, as the clouds are on fire till dusk quenches the flames and slowly transforms the sky into a starry dome.
