Rent a bike or a moped and ride natural tracks around the island. Take one of the coastal roads for truly special views and cross-island roads that will take you to the smaller Cook Islands, some of which are completely uninhabited. The village contains the oldest church in the Cook Islands and is surrounded by sacred grounds where rituals were performed in the past. Don’t forget to follow tradition and step on the Visitor’s Rock. Do it when you arrive to be welcomed into the village, and again before you leave, to leave everything behind.

The coral lagoon is by far the main reason visitors come to Aitutaki. It is filled with colourful, tropical fish, plentiful coral, sea turtles and long sandy beaches.

The Aitutaki market opens at 6 a.m. and its worth waking up for. Here you can also find local dishes such as Ika Mata (raw fish) or Rukau (boiled taro leaf).

Fun Facts

At just a 20-minute walk from the main road you will reach Mount Maungapu, an ideal place to catch a 360° view of the lagoon, relax and maybe observe the sunset.
