Charlottetown Churches Walking Tour

OVERVIEW

Meander through Charlottetown at a leisurely pace, admiring four of its most glorious churches, ranging from the oldest, to one said to be haunted by phantom bell ringers. After walking from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of Charlottetown, home to some of Canada’s most beautiful and historical churches. Your first stop will be Trinity United Church, which opened in 1864, shortly after the historic Charlottetown Conference that helped lay the groundwork for Canadian Confederation. As the oldest church in Charlottetown in continuous us, Trinity can accommodate up to 1,000 worshippers and is known for its magnificent stained-glass windows. Next, you’ll visit the stunning All Souls Chapel, a National Historic Site. In addition to its historical significance, the Chapel showcases an incredible collection of murals painted by the architect’s brother. You will then make your way to St. James Presbyterian Church. Unlike many of the stone churches found throughout Charlottetown, St. James features a wooden ceiling and interior columns. The church is also associated with the fascinating local legend of phantom bell ringers, a story that has even been commemorated on stamps. Your final church stop will be St. Dunstan’s Basilica, a magnificent stone French Gothic-style church that was rebuilt in 1913 following a devastating fire. It is the fourth church to have stood on this site, with each of its predecessors destroyed by fire. Now designated a National Historic Site of Canada, St. Dunstan’s is one of Charlottetown’s most recognizable landmarks, particularly for its soaring spires and elaborate architecture. Upon concluding your tour, your Guide will return to the Seaport, while you continue to enjoy the sights and charm of walking through Downtown Charlottetown.
