Gain a cultural and historical understanding of Nagoya by visiting attractions that reveal how the area has changed over the centuries. Nagoya Castle Honmaru Palace lends insight into 17th-century Japan. Although destroyed by fire during World War II, the castle has been faithfully reconstructed using the original methods of construction. The golden sea creatures on the castle’s roof have become a symbol of Nagoya.

For a look into more modern Japan, you will visit the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, an attraction that celebrates industrial innovations. You can expect to see exhibits on textiles, automotive breakthroughs and steam engine technology. Atsuta Shrine will present a glimpse into the Shinto religion. It is known most famously for the legendary sword that is enshrined there. The weapon is so sacred that it is never displayed, however, thousands of other artifacts are exhibited, including holy garments, utensils for deities and ancient documents.

Need to Know:

Note: This tour includes approximately 3.5 hours of walking on mostly flat, gravel surfaces with a few steps. At the Honmaru Palace, participants walk approximately 0.5 mile from the parking lot to the entrance of the Palace. The Atsuta Shrine involves walking for about 0.2 mile from the parking lot to the main hall of the shrine. This tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested. Socks are recommended, as shoes must be removed upon entry to Nagoya Castle Honmaru Palace. The main donjon of Nagoya Castle will be under construction and the entire structure is scheduled to be dismantled from March 2020. Participants will not be able to see the main donjon of the castle, but will be able to visit the castle grounds and enter the Honmaru Palace. Due to the main donjon being unavailable for visits, congestion has been seen at the Honmaru Palace by which tour timings can be affected depending on day of visit. No photography or video is allowed inside Nagoya Castle, Honmaru Palace and Toyota Comemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. Guests with dietary restrictions must notify staff at least 72 hours before port of call
