Operated by a local environmentalist, the center works to improve the chances of survival for the endangered species of Golfina sea turtles. Your coach will take you inland, passing through Sao Martinho to the Socorridos ravine. Eira do Serrado is reached after a short drive along a winding road, offering spectacular views of the interior of the island. Here, it's a short and easy walk up to the viewpoint on Pico de Serrado at an altitude of approximately 3,592 feet (1,094 meters), for an amazing view down onto the village of Curral das Freiras. Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley) is a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island. In 1566, the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here where they also brought the convent’s treasure. Your next stop will be at Monte.

This small village, perched up in the hills overlooking Funchal, was formerly a health resort for Europe's high society, including Austrian Emperor Charles I. One of its long-lost features was a rack railway, which connected Monte with Funchal. From here you will board the cable car and see Madeira from the air, experiencing the wonderful views all the way down to Funchal. The cable car is made up of 40 small cabins with a capacity of up to eight people per cabin and it has an approximate duration of 15 minutes. Your last stop will be at an important wine lodge, where a sample of the famous Madeira wine will be offered.

Watch humpback whales and other marine creatures cavorting in the nutrient-rich waters at Point Adolphus, one of Alaska’s premier observation points. During the cruise, a naturalist will describe the diversity of animals that converge here each summer. They come primarily to feed in the waters that are extraordinarily rich in halibut, salmon and plankton. Point Adolphus is noted for having the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so be on the lookout for these majestic and intelligent creatures. You can expect them to be breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding voraciously to fatten up for their winter migration south. You might also observe frolicking Dall’s porpoises, Stellar sea lions, curious harbor seals and Orca whales. You may also see graceful bald eagles swooping down to grab fish in their talons, and perhaps even bears and deer in the surrounding wooded landscape.

Knossos was the court of the legendary King Minos, whose wife Pasiphae gave birth to the Minotaur, half-bull, half-man. The excavations on the site lasted 35 years. Entering the Great Palace through the West Court, one can easily understand why the legend of the labyrinth grew up here. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to walk around the site. Admire the superb Royal Quarters, the Throne Room with an antechamber and main throne, and the Queen’s Quarters whose wall above the entrance door is decorated with a copy of the famous dolphin frescos. Apart from the Royal Palace there are also other buildings included on the site such as the Small Palace, the House of the High Priest and the Caravanserai.

You’ll travel to Lake Albano, situated in the crater of an extinct volcano, and the hilltop town of Castel Gandolfo, a pretty village that clusters around the papal palace, where the popes have had their summer residence for centuries. Drive through the rolling hills of Rome’s wine growing region and stop at a local farmhouse. You’ll be greeted by a member of the family, who will show you around the property. Mama herself will demonstrate how to make fresh pasta and you may give it a try if you like, before settling down for a homemade Italian lunch, accompanied of course by home produced wines.

Ever think of taking a boat ride to an active volcano and hike its gravel terrain? Board your local boat “caique” from the old port of Santorini for a 15 minute trip up to Nea Kameni. En route, admire the volcanic shores with the peculiar shape formations of the black volcanic rocks and the white pumice. After disembarking, a steep and fast paced 30 minute, 3/4 mile hike on rocky and gravel terrain takes you to the crater of this still active volcano.

During your walk up an ascending path, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the lava fragments and the volcanic rock formations. Once you reach the crater, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the view of Santorini and the amazing cliffs of the caldera. Board you boat and sail towards the thermal springs of Palea Kameni, with its green sulfur warm waters and temperatures that reach 37° C (98° F). Here you’ll have the opportunity to jump off the boat and swim to the springs, weather permitting.

Your day of discovery begins when you board you air conditioned transportation. You’ll pass by buildings and homes featuring Colonial, Republican and Moorish styles and your guide explains the many influences that came to be in Cartagena. Your first stop will be 'Punta Icacos', near the fishing village of La Boquilla. Here, you’ll be greeted by local fishermen who earn a living by traditional means of fishing. These fishermen will explain the process of making, repairing and casting the nets, as well as provide a demonstration. On your way back to Cartagena your guide will provide you with more information regarding Colombian history including the "Vallenato". The Vallenato is a traditional type of music typically using an accordion, flute and drum. Next, stop is at El Muelle where you’ll be greeted and entertained by your own band of Vallenato.

Sample a traditional Colombian snack or "frito" if you wish before making your way to the Emerald Museum. Here, you’ll see craftsmen at work as well as learn the history and cultural importance of the precious stone. Then, visit the famous walled or Old City and Portal de Dulce, an area where local vendors sell the handmade Columbian candies, famous around the world. Take a sweet sample before continuing your walk through the Plaza de la Aduana and Simon Bolivar Square. Along the way your guide will point out areas of interest as well as information on the many churches, building and monuments before you begin your free time in the colonial city. Feel free to stroll along the beautiful streets, browse the many shops and admire the beautiful architecture and flower covered balconies before returning to your ship.

Settle in aboard an expedition vessel for a wonderfully picturesque cruise to a private island kayak base, the starting point for a kayaking adventure through the Siginaka Islands. The cruise will set the stage for what lies ahead, as the scenery will be spectacular. Still, few experiences rival exploring the islands in a sea kayak, where the serenity is so overwhelming that you will feel at one with nature. Then you will re-board a boat or a local train back to La Spezia where your motorcoach is waiting for you for the return drive to Livorno.

After departing from the pier in a boat, you will soon enter the protected turquoise lagoon that encircles Raiatea, an island whose name translates to faraway heaven. Upon arriving at the nearby island of Tahaa, it’s a short walk to reach the vanilla plantation. Seventy percent of the vanilla grown in French Polynesia is from Tahaa and it makes for a wonderfully fragrant setting. While strolling about, you can expect to see and smell aromatic vanilla pods curing in the sun. You may also walk among the rows of climbing orchids that produce the pods and learn how they are hand-pollinated. You will also have time to shop for vanilla-infused products.

Re-boarding your boat, it’s a short cruise to one of the lagoon’s gorgeous reef islets, known as motus. Few places are so relaxing, serene and ideal for beachcombing. An island style lunch will be served during your time on the motu, and the remainder of your stay will be free to do as you please. You might sunbathe or relax in the shade, doing nothing more ambitious than watching the waves gently lap at the shore. Or you may enjoy a refreshing swim and a bit of snorkeling (mask and snorkel provided).

Take a coastal drive with views of rocky mountains, gulfs and sea cliffs on the way to the town of Rethymnon. You’ll have some free time to wander around on your own before continuing to a local restaurant to enjoy a Cretan lunch.

Spend a delightful day touring and dining at a family estate in a mountain village and then explore medieval Kotor, where you will be treated to a rare interior visit of a church.

After departing from the pier, you will begin an immensely scenic and circuitous drive toward Fort Gorazda, a 19th-century fortress that overlooks Kotor and its fjord-like bay. The views will be extraordinary as you travel ever higher into the mountains, where you will pause for photos of the majestic beauty.

Before long, you will arrive at the Kascelan family estate in the village of Mirac. During an enlightening walking tour of the property with the owners, you will gain a sincere understanding of rural life. The estate vineyards are devoted to different types of grapes including Vranac, a varietal synonymous with Montenegro.

Climbing up towards the central mountain range, your tour takes the road that leads to Monte, a village notable for its many fine properties and gardens.
