    OVERVIEW

Spend a delightful evening enjoying the quintessential Victorian tradition of tea and savory treats – but with an alluring twist – at the Fairmont Empress, an iconic hotel that has graced the shores of the Inner Harbor since 1908. Over the years, a Who’s Who of royalty, dignitaries and celebrities have enjoyed afternoon tea at the Empress. But this after-hours affair is quite different as their signature Empress tea will be served iced, not hot, noting special alcoholic cocktails are available for purchase. The culinary offerings will be equally memorable as they will likely include a warm white cheddar & chive biscuit, Vegan Mushroom pate, gluten free tapioca violet mousse. Afterwards, you will have free-time to enjoy the inner harbor, including the domed Parliament Buildings, which dominates the skyline, especially in the evening when it is beautifully illuminated.

    OVERVIEW

Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights as you make your way to Mendenhall Valley. The first stop is at the Brotherhood Bridge. Here is where you will be able to take in the amazing views of the Mendenhall Valley. The bridge was and is of great historic and symbolic importance, representing a bridging of the gap between Native and Non-Native people and overcoming racial tensions. The bridge features 10 bronze medallions with the ANB crest and imagery, sculpted by Roy Peratrovich Jr. In honor of the ANB’s 50th anniversary. The crew on the medallions depicts the two great Tlingit moieties, Eagle and Raven. The ANB is the solid rock on which these moieties rest. Next you're off to Glacier Gardens where you'll board a guided tram vehicle and climb up through the temperate rainforest to a scenic viewing platform that offers alpine views of the surrounding mountains, waterways and islands. Upon your return to the base area, you'll have time to visit the Gardens pavilion and view the variety of botanical plants that thrive in the local climate. From the Gardens, it's a short drive back to your ship along Juneau's waterfront

    OVERVIEW

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the scenic waters of the Inside Passage to Sentinel Island, whose iconic lighthouse was constructed in 1902. Although you may spot harbor seals and Stellar sea lions along the shore and bald eagles soaring overhead, the star attractions are the humpback whales that spend their summers in the nutrient rich waters. You may witness these incredible creatures breach and splash their flukes as they dive and feed to prepare for their winter migration. Few sights are quite so mesmerizing as adult humpbacks that can grow to be 60 feet long and weigh up to 40 tons. Upon reaching Sentinel Island, you will follow the boardwalk to the unusual Art Deco-style lighthouse. Immerse yourself in its history, with the option to ascend the tower or explore the first floor and peruse the captivating black-and-white photos of the beacon and the “wickies” – an affectionate term for the lighthouse keepers – that once operated it.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Cruise the waters north of Juneau in search of humpback whales.
    • Keep an eye out for other marine wildlife, including seals, sea lions and bald eagles.
    • Explore Sentinel Island and the lighthouse that was built there more than a century ago.
    • Stop at Brotherhood Bridge for a spectacular photo-opportunity of *Mendenhall Glacier in the distance.

Cruise into beautiful Auke Bay looking for humpback whales feeding and breaching the water’s surface, and then enjoy a traditional Alaskan salmon bake.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief but picturesque drive to Auke Bay, a pristine waterway named after one of the Alaskan native first people. Upon arriving, you will board a jet-powered catamaran specifically designed for sightseeing and cruising Alaskan waters. Before long, you will be out in a prime area for whale watching.

Humpback whales are often spotted here, even close to shore, and the sight is breathtaking. You may see these majestic creatures breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding voraciously to fatten up for their winter migration south.

You might even spot them bubble-net feeding, a unique technique in which several whales swim in an ever-shrinking circle while blowing bubbles below a school of fish. The bubbles force the fish upwards and cluster them into a column, presenting the perfect opportunity for the whales to gorge themselves. It’s a mesmerizing sight you will not soon forget.

Following the whale-watching adventure, you will dine at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake. The salmon will be grilled over a fragrant alderwood fire, imparting the fish with a unique taste. The all-you-can-eat meal includes other signature Alaskan side dishes and desserts, so bring a hearty appetite. After dining, you might pan for gold at Salmon Creek Falls and see mining relics at the Wagner Mine.

Watch a traditional tribal performance that reflects the long and fascinating history of the Tlingits as a prelude to a feast of fresh seafood and other classic Alaskan dishes. After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at the Native Heritage Center Theater to watch the local Tlingits perform an inspiring tribal interpretation. The Tlingits have lived in this part of southeastern Alaska for thousands of years and their traditions run deep. They express them beautifully through interpretive songs and storytelling. The performers will be dressed in full regalia, including masks and headdresses. The entertainers will share their history from the time when advancing glaciers forced them out of their original homeland in Glacier Bay. They called their new settlement Hoonah, a word that means “where the north wind doesn’t blow.” With their rich history of harvesting resources from the sea and land, the Tlingit have always had great respect for the environment. Many of their performances express the significance of indigenous animals such as the raven, seal and eagle. Others tell of the tribe’s struggles with the harsh environment and poignant social issues. Following the performance, you will dine on a sumptuous meal of classic Alaskan dishes. The menu will include seasonal shrimp and crabs, Andouille sausage and all sorts of sides. Afterwards, you can make s’mores around the campfire. This is a set menu and accommodations cannot be made for special diets.
