Agatha Christie's Hideaway
hrs Estimate Duration
Cruise up the River Dart to Greenway Estate for an in-depth look into the life of mystery writer Agatha Christie, who spent summers and holidays here for nearly 40 years.
After a short walk along the pier, you will board a ferry for a picturesque cruise up the River Dart, the wide waterway after which Dartmouth at its mouth is named. Along the way, you will enjoy magnificent views of the countryside, a bucolic landscape shaped by the river. In time, you will disembark at Greenway Estate, the holiday home of beloved mystery writer Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan. Now owned by the National Trust, the 18th-century Georgian house sits on a rise overlooking the river.
Having grown up in nearby Torquay, Christie had long admired the property and finally purchased it in 1938. As you tour Greenway’s interior, you may see memorabilia from Christie’s childhood in the drawing room, objects from her archaeologist husband’s digs, a collection of inlaid woodwork and the Steinway piano that Christie played at a concert level.
An outside visit will follow, and your guide will explain how the positioning of the house and its vicinity to River Dart give the perfect peaceful atmosphere everyone seeks during holidays. While out in the gardens, you might want to see the magnolia trees planted when the couple bought the home. You will also have a few minutes to browse the shop on the premises.
