Cruise a twin-hulled catamaran through Twofold Bay, following the beautiful coastline blanketed with forests and dotted with historical buildings.

After a brief walk along the pier, you will board a sleek, twin-hulled catamaran and begin a leisurely cruise through Twofold Bay, one of the deepest natural harbors in the Southern hemisphere. British explorer George Bass named the bay for the two distinct curves or folds in the shoreline.

While cruising, you’ll learn about the history of Eden and Twofold Bay’s vital role in the development of the area. Because of the ideal conditions, the bay was home to numerous whaling stations in the 19th century. Whales are still so prevalent that these waters are known as the Humpback Highway, a reference to the thousands of humpback whales that pass by between September and November on the way to Antarctica.

Controversial entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd was also influential, as he built a church and an inn here before mysteriously disappearing while hunting ducks. Boyd also commissioned a lighthouse to be constructed, but it was only used for whale spotting after his death. Its tower still stands in Ben Boyd National Park overlooking Twofold Bay’s southern coastline.

You may also spot the Davidson Whaling Station where the Towamba River flows into the bay. It was the longest-operating, shore-based whaling station in Australia and has great historical significance. After nearly two hours on the water, you will return to the pier.

    OVERVIEW

See how 19th-century whalers lived and worked as you visit a surviving whaling station and a lookout tower along Twofold Bay. Named for it two curving shoreline folds, this body of water is one of the deepest natural harbors in the Southern Hemisphere. The ideal conditions and vast numbers of migrating humpback and right whales passing close by each year made this area home to many whaling stations. Among them was Davidson Whaling Station – the longest-operating, shore-based whaling station in Australia. As you tour this weathered landmark, your guide will enlighten you on the three generations of Davidson whalers who lived here from 1826 until 1932. Much of their family memorabilia and equipment remains, including the try-works where blubber was boiled to extract the oil. After a time, you’ll continue to a sandstone structure that though intended as a lighthouse, it was never lit – instead being used as a lookout for whales. Climb to the top for a superb vantage point on surrounding Green Cape and rocky Red Point. Closer by, look for the carving on one of its window ledges, paying tribute to a sailor killed by a whale.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Visit two Eden landmarks from the days when whaling – not whale-watching – dominated Twofold Bay.
    • Tour the weathered home site and blubber processing relics at Davidson Whaling Station.
    • Learn more about this unique family who hunted whales from here for three generations, aided by a pack of killer whales.

    HELPFUL HINTS

    • Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.
    • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Discover Merimbula, Pambula and Eden, picturesque villages known for their natural beauty, historical landmarks and unspoiled settings that have long inspired artists.

This hidden pocket of Australia’s epic coastline is where you can reconnect with and share your love of nature. Immerse yourself in the local villages of Pambula, Merimbula and Eden all lapped by pristine waters that produce some of Australia’s best seafood.

Merimbula's magic begins with a glimpse of the beaches, brilliant beneath the bright sunshine. Merimbula has always been a beautiful place of sheltered waters and seafood feasts. On this tour you’ll learn more about the local award- winning oysters - The Yuin People were the first to harvest and share oysters, fish and more, with middens dating back thousands of years, still visible on the lake’s edge. Enjoy a short stop and photo opportunity at Boller point for spectacular views of the coast before driving through the small town of Merimbula. You’ll have about 1-hour free time here to browse the main street where you’ll discover a pleasing amount of specialty shops and restaurants.

Drive through Pambula, a coastal village big in history; its peaceful lakes and idyllic river mouth are a far cry from the hustle and bustle following the discovery of gold near the township in the 1880s. Pambula shopfronts give a nod to that era, with bull-nose verandahs, a town clock and a general lack of tall neon signs.

Head back to Eden, set in the magnificent Twofold Bay – the third deepest natural harbor in the southern hemisphere. Eden was home to shore-based whaling stations and Old Tom, the legendary killer whale whose story can be discovered at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. You’ll see the pristine Aslings Beach, a fishermen’s favorite and often home to migrating whales who are nursing their young before heading south. Move on to Quarantine Bay – peaceful and ringing with bell bird calls. There is always something to watch on the water here as the bay is home to a four-lane boat ramp, Quarantine Bay Yacht Club, and the Eden Amateur Fishermen’s Club.
