Venture beyond Abidjan to the former colonial capital of the Ivory Coast-Grand Bassam, which nestles between a lagoon and the ocean. Departing by coach from the pier, you will first drive east through coconut groves to the seaside village of Grand Bassam. The city was the French colonial capital of the Cote d'Ivoire briefly in the late 1890s, until the government administration was transferred to nearby Bingerville. Colonial buildings can still be seen throughout Grand Bassam, a number of them restored to their former grandeur, particularly in the Ancien Bassam district. Here, you will have a narrated tour of the highlights of the area, passing such sights as the colonial governor's palace, and the National Museum of Costume. A stop will be made at the Costume Museum which features exhibits dedicated to colorful native garb, ceremonial masks and models of traditional houses. Perusing the many displays, you will gain great insight into the culture of the Ivory Coast. Next, drive to the Assoyam Beach Resort for lunch. The setting is quite beautiful, as the resort is right on the ocean and there will be time for a quick dip in the water if you choose. Following lunch, you will visit one of Grand Bassam's finest arts and crafts markets. Look for brass carvings, batik paintings, ceramic, wickerwork and embroidered scarves. The artistry reflects the best of the Ivory Coast. After approximately 90-minutes enjoying the craft market, you will re-join your coach and transfer back to the pier.
